I really needed a chuckle and u gave me that with this video with your reaction to the creaking door lol 😂, I lost my beloved dog bed his weekend and that was my first laugh yet alone smile . If you ever wonder if making the videos is making a difference on somebody’s life , know that it is ! You’re the best !
Love that top it really suits you. I thoroughly enjoyed Little Fires Everywhere and I enjoyed the film of it also, though, as often happens, I thought the book had more depth. Not read any of the others that you mentioned but that one written from POV of cancer sounds really intriguing. Have a great week. x
I haven’t even watched the video yet but I absolutely agree with you about blackbirds. There is one that stands on top of the telegraph pole outside my house each evening and sings his little heart out. I always go out to listen to him and it makes me unbelievably happy.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - love that you support Readings 💕 - and you have reminded me about Jessica Au’s book that I need to get to 😊
Hi Simon. Less is really worth reading, short too if i remember right. i think Jen Campbell has a poem in the 100 Queer poems book. On my phone you keep going from colour to black and white. Very 50s TV. Not read Little Fires either, definitely tbr.
Yeah Jen does. She mentioned it in a recent video. I hadn’t even flicked through the collection so I had no idea. Ha. Excited for it though. The black and white bits are on purpose. It’s when I go off on a tangent or say something daft.
Flies, birds, ghosts, sirens and books. This video had it all! really good, actually sounds really good, actually. Love Shitt's Creek! The Marmalade Diaries and Woman Eating sound very interesting. And that Trust proof cover...wow! Happy reading!
Thanks Angela. Some real treats in this haul. I oddly feel like it’s the one that most shows the sort of books I want to be reading over the coming months. I feel like my tastes are changing a bit again.
Maps of Our Spectacular Bodies is really special. I hope you enjoy it - I'm definitely looking forward to hearing what you think of it. Absolutely love your videos, and I was definitely tittering at this one, thank you! 😂
Thank you for being so enthusiastic about Elif Shefak’s The island of missing trees! Because of that, I bought it on a whim because of our holiday plans for Cyprus. Hadn’t had time to read it yet. Until my son realised on Sunday evening he needed to bring a book to school for English literature the next morning. He’s definitely not a reader (😱) so I was struggling to find something on my book shelves that he would like. Until I realised: Cyprus! Talking figs! Modern history! So now he’s reading it in school, and I decided to start reading it this weekend to be able to help him. Finished it in one sitting, it’s brilliant! (Son thinks it’s “fine”, which - from a non-reading teenager - can be considered a compliment, I think 😂)
Wow. I don’t know if it’s a teenager book, depends on age etc. But well played for sending him in its direction. The first ‘grown up’ book my mum gave me to read was Patrick Suskind’s Perfume, a brilliantly dark book. Had me hooked.
@@SavidgeReads he turns 17 this month. He volunteers in a local WW II museum so he’s well aware of the dark side of humanity (actually, the only thing he likes to read is anything non-fiction re. WW II). I have started Perfume a few times but never managed to finish it, don’t know why exactly, maybe try again soon!
So many of these I want to read! I’m reading Ida: A Sword Among Lions by Paula J. Giddings, which is a large book, but once done I would like to start on The Books of Jacob. I usually have several books going at one time but I can’t bring myself to have two large books at the same time and I know the descending page numbers are going to mess with my brain as anyway. 😬 So many books… so little time 😭
Brill video. Can I ask where do you read, e.g. garden? that helps you relax and get into the story. Any reading tips for getting through books quicker? Sorry for all the questions there. Just makes me feel so bad that I have lots on the tbr and get nowhere compared to you. Do you read so many hours per day? Happy reading. 🤓
I’m not reading very much at the moment so I wish I had the answers for myself. Favourite places to read. Bed. Sofa. I make time to read usually but at the moment I’m so busy I’m lucky if I get ten/twenty pages done a day.
During the International Booker ceremony on eof the presenters quoted José Saramago about translation. I found it brilliant, and am sharing it here is anyone needs motivation to read translated books: “The author with his language creates national literature; world literature is produced by translators.” As someone who's first language is not English, I think this sums it up perfectly.
I scored the ploughing over the books of the dead in the PDSA charity shop! I also scored a signed edition of Fox Season and other stories by Agnieszka Dale from ebay! I didn't know it was signed! I get a lot of oil rig helicopters and the odd air ambulance! Me and second hand shops are dangerous for me! Family have a good moan!
I have years and years to read them. I don’t buy books for right now. Mind you I didn’t buy all these but you know what I mean. I accumulate books for a lifetime of reading not for instant reading.
@@SavidgeReads yeah I get that. 🤣 I dont have the room to buy all the books I fancy but you should see how full my Kindle is. Theres no way I'm.living long enough to read them all 🤣🤣🤣😂🤣 the curse of a reader!

Tbh I agree about the Fitzcarraldo and Persephone's covers. Personally, I've never been a fan of them because of their monotony, never liked them even though I am interested in the content of the books. The covers are just so boring, it just cuts out the work of cover designers, but cover designers really make a difference in my opinion and their work is important.
Ha. I think maybe I like them a bit more than you. I love a Persephone I have to say. They have amazing end papers and matching book marks and that’s good enough for me lol
@@SavidgeReads I know I'm more extreme haha, I just have very strong opinions in general. I still read them because I want to support them and they have some really good books
For "nasty" fiction, I just read Something is Always Happening Somewhere by Kelly McClure and you might want to check that out. Dark, bleak, confronting, queer. Not a happy queer story, but not a happy anything story.
Hmmmm I am torn on this as I love the sound of it but I’m so bored of miserable unhappy queer stories it’s untrue. I love the dark, bleak and confronting angle though. Tricky.

I’m hoping I’ve several decades to get to books, so whenever the mood is right. I feel like there’s a lot of pressure to ‘read everything you own now’ and I’m not about that. Readings about mood and the right timing. That said this haul is probably the most ‘where my reading brain is at’ taste wise at the moment so we shall see. I’m not putting any pressure on myself to get out of the slump though. That would probably make it worse.
@@SavidgeReads Totally agree Simon. Never put yourself under pressure. Joyce Carol Oates is so prolific, it's amazing and she teaches as well. Yes, the birds are nice on that foiled cover.

Really looking forward to it. Love when I hear a book I’ve picked up is someone else’s favourite.
Andrew Holleran is fantastic, you should really read Dancer from the Dance. His last novel was actually ‘Grief’ published in 2006 though 😉
Ha. I just went off the blurb of it being the first book in a few decades. Have to say I’m dreadful on my queer literary history… I’m a dreadful gay.
