Dad watched it all, you must save a lot on fixing, good for the kids to learn, on the same time it must be a great satisfaction to be able to do it. Hope Erik have learned how the starter works.
I'm trying to replace a starter on my 99 Ford contour... I will say it's a headache looking at it... I'm a female and my patience is at zero... I want to take a hammer to the whole dang car!!!!! I cry when I do any kind of mechanical work .... then crack up laughing in relief when it's done!!! Don't ask me why.... I be in tears like I'm in great pain while working... I work through the tears!!! and I started doing my own work because I got tired of mechanics cheating me out my hard earned money!!! I was pregnant up under the car doing a oil change... people thought I was insane lol. No just was a Fed up mommy!!!! Thanks for the video... it helps!!!
Male, Female, does not matter. It is a pain in the ass regardless. To make matters worse, I had to do it a second time, as the rebuilt I put in died 2 years later. Think that is bad? Wait until the alternator goes.
For some reason i cannot remember how yo connect the wires. The positive wire coming from the battery connects to the back of the starter with the ground? Is that correct?
Thanks for the video! I recently put in a new transmission in my 96 Mystique (6 months ago). I was shocked to find the starter ontop of the MTX bellhousing! I thought I would have to drop the subframe and motor/tranny AGAIN! lol
My Contour is starting to leak power steering fluid. Have you had to replace your rack & pinion yet? I was wondering if it was possible to sneak in a new one without completely dropping the sub-frame?
You can do it, but its a pain in the arse. I would drop the subframe, much easier that way. You can clean the subframe at the same time and give it a good coat of paint to protect from rust. And check the bushings.
Working on an escape 3.0 with same starter placement but less stuff in the way. 2 bolts out and wires bit the darn thing won't come off the pins. Seems like such a simple design but my pins are stuck. hammers and pry bars have only gotten me a slight wiggle, can move the whole engine prying it but won't pop off the belhousing
I took a 2x4 block of wood and used a blow hammer to break it loose. I have done this job twice, and the first one was with an aftermarket starter, had a heck of times aligning the pins. The second starter was a ford rebuilt, and it dropped right in aligning perfectly.
The hammer wasn't working for me but I used a chain and pulled it up with a harbor freight engine support brace, then pryed up the side toward firewall then still had to wiggle and beat on the other pin to get it free. The pin was half pulled out when I got it free
So I started to remove my starter today. I followed your instructions they were very helpful. The problem is that my car is an automatic and the dipstick tube is right in the way. I gave up after 4hrs. of working on it. Anyone have suggestions on how to wiggle the starter out of an auto trans. car?
Sorry to here that. This is a PITA of a job. There is a website called Contour.org. Might be some advice there if you search. The service manual says to remove gear selector cable and gear shift cable bracket for Automatic model. No mention about the dipstick. It also says to remove fuel supply (for manual or automatic), I was able to do the job by not removing any fuel lines.
Thanks for the input! I ended up having to take off the heater hoses to make room to get the starter out. I haven't tried to reinstall it yet. If I can't get it back in-place easily I plan to cut a few inches off the dipstick tube for more room.
I doubt there is an easier way. You do not need to remove any hoses or fuel lines. Removing the battery tray is optional, but will give you more room to work with. I have done the starter twice now, as the first one the solenoid failed. The second time around I removed the battery tray and it was easier.
This was the only I can find to change a starter on the 2.5 Duratec. Thanks for the help. 🙌
I used a gear wrench to remove the front bolt on the starter on my svt when i replaced my clutch. Its a pain to remove any other way.

Yikes!!!! Trust me I don't want to think about it!!! I'm already in tears thinking about it!!

The two bolts on the side won’t come out for me lol broke my wrench on it
I still can’t get the bolts off

It would be faster if you were to turn off all the lights and work by feel only!!!
This is the same process for a cougar 1999 realy?
Couger has the same engine. Might be more crampted.
Thanks for your help!
you made this way harder on yourself .taking stuff apart that wasn't needed
Feel free to pass on your information to others that may be watching.
so whats the easier way?

Can you make your video any darker ?
Yes you can.
Adjust the brightness level on your monitor to the darkness level that suits your needs.
you keep standing in the light all we see is your shadow.
It wasn't THAT easy,,, you Meade it look too easy
No the job sucks. But easy compared to the Starter. Nothing is easy on this car!
It was easy for the most part compared to many others I have done.
