  • We are deeply saddened by the devastating news that Mark Fisher died on January 13th. He first visited the FFT in 2014 with his lecture „The Privatisation of Stress“ about how neoliberalism deliberately cultivated collective depression. Later in the year he returned with a video-lecture about „Reoccupying the Mainstream" in the frame of the symposium „Sichtungen III“ in which he talks about how to overcome the ideology of capitalist realism and start thinking about a new positive political project: „If we want to combat capitalist realism then we need to be able to articulate, to project an alternative realism.“ We were talking about further collaboration with him last year but it did not work out because Mark wasn’t well. His books „Capitalist Realism“ and „The Ghosts of my Life. Writings on Depression, Hauntology and Lost Future“ will continue to be a very important inspiration for our work.

I've only recently discovered Mark Fisher. His death is a great loss, but what a great exemplar he was. A rather shy, working class intellectual with great soul, and sensitivity. We need more people like him challenging capitalist realism.

This man introduced me to the world of theory, and for that I am grateful. Before I knew of Mark and Zero books, I literally lived in the world of standard right vs. left politics (I had no clue that such theorizing was taking place all around the world, whether in the academy or outside of it), and my vision of our social reality was therefore blurred. Since then, my thought on economic/social/cultural issues has matured significantly. My thoughts go out to Mark and the people he impacted.

I didn't know there were 21st century thinkers who were theorizing on the subject, as I had assumed real philosophy died in the latter half of the last century. It's sad that he's gone, but I think a lot more of us will make a similar choice when we get closer and closer to the accelerated outcome.

I can relate, except I discovered it in his, and others blogs from around 2006-2010. It was pretty crazy reading all those blogs back then. It felt a bit like I was downloading the acquired knowledge and views of a large group of slightly crazed clever people directly into my brain. Except less uncritically than that sounds. Weird what a brief span of time it actually was.

I love hearing Marks voice. Its not what I expected, its very soft and kind sounding. Im sure he made all his students feel welcome. I am very glad to have found his readings but I wish I could have met him, I am sure he was a lovely individual and not just a powerful writer.

Any assumption of non-reality is postmodern absurdity and usually points towards increasing bureaucracy like how Fisher indicates in his book.

Effects of major depression estimates of intelligence. Sackeim, Harold A.; Freeman, Jon; McElhiney, Martin; Coleman, Eliza; et al Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology, Vol 14(2), Mar 1992, 268-288. doi: 10.1080/01688639208402828 psycnet.apa.org/record/1992-27465-001
and International Society for Intelligence Research Conference 2005 Intelligence May Buffer the Depressogenic Effects of Social Stress in Adolescents Paul W. Andrews, Judy Silberg, and Lindon Eaves (page 10 of this pdf www.isironline.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/program2005.pdf )
These + the longitudinal study bobtentpeg mentions show that IQ is fairly well negatively correlated with depression. Treating depression can increase IQ, and higher IQ seems to offer more ability to cope with factors inducing depression.
Regarding the relationship between higher IQ and depression, this review (positivedisintegration.com/Neihart1999.pdf ) has a -ton- of references to dig through. Sample quote: "The literature on depression does not support a correlation between high IQ and depression among children and adolescents (Mash & Barkley, 1996)."
*There is a link, just not what you might have expected. In some studies, it shows that IQ helps combat depression.*

Read his essay 'Good For Nothing', in it he states that knowledge was what kept him alive. It's important to note that as dark as his work could get, he didn't see himself as a political pessimist, especially near the end of his life. His death was much more the product of his life long battles with depression (and the fact that he couldn't properly access mental health services in his time of need) than it was his theoretical postulations or intellect.

I truly think his suicide was because he was getting old and did what most oldies do... gave up searching hard for new music, new art etc and then dismissing all they found as no good or recycling old ideas.
I'm 57 years old, I search for new music and art and am constantly surprised at what I find that is still pushing boundaries and reaching new territory.
    Its simple, Fisher gave up.
