Completely agree about the Nikon ED lenses, Caleb. I just recently hauled out my Nikon 12-24 ED from my photography gear and am using it on my GH5. I have to say, I am blown away and can't believe I was ignoring it for video work! It has been 'living' on my GH5 for the past few weeks
you have for years put together imaginative vids that offer your unique perspective. i am very much an appreciative subscriber (i have also bought your camera guides!) thumbs up.
With the Sigma 18-35mm on BMPCC4k, I can use a speedbooster or just an adaptor, so I get a 24-47mm at f1.2, 34-66mm at f1.8, and in 1080p I can do window sensor I can do 48-94mm f1.2 and 68-132mm f1.8. All with 1 lens, 1 speedbooster and 1 adaptor. And I can redo the same things with any other EF lens I own ! I'll do test at some point with a 500mm mirror lens, + a cheap doubler, + Canon 2x adaptor, plus the 1.9 crop factor plus the 1080 2x crop. So that give me about 7600mm 25.2f ;)
Hello. I'm with a lot of doubts and a low budget. My goal is to buy a A7 III. I want to use is on a primary basis of local news video coverage. I want to buy a all around lense so i was thinking about the Sony FE 24-105mm FA GOSS but it is a little expensive. Any alternative more cheaper than this? Thanks
Hey I use a canon camera and I've been struggling to get tips on adapters. I would like to get some of these lenses and i know I would need an adapter of some sort to go with them. Is there a universal canon adapter or do I have to get adapters for specific lenses? I'm still confused
The tamron 28-70mm - you're recommending it for video saying that the autofocus is good. Does the continuous auto focus work on your sony a7iii? That would be amazing!!!!
It's 28-75mm, and C-AF works great with it! It does seem to hunt a bit more than most (not all) native Sony lenses in low light in certain focus modes (exp. flexible spot, for instance). If you run across that, though, just switch to wide and it'll work basically as good as the really good focusing Sony lenses(28f2, 55f1.8, 85f1.8, etc).
Hi Caleb, you have praised the qualities of the 55m Sony Zeiss. I own it, and I agree: it is optically great. But as a cine lens, it gives me a hard time to focus manually because of it's focus by wire system. Very imprecise and erratic. Doesn't it bother you? Any tips?
Is the Pentax 50mm f1.7 the same as the Pentacon f1.8? The Pentacons can get that bubble bokeh and are more expensive. If the Pentax (as you stated in the video Pentacon) is the same, then that's a great price. I would also recommend the 17-55 Nikon lens as well. Its more like a full-frame 20-55mm but it's on par with the 24-70 f2.8 in terms of IQ and build quality. Funny enough, I have the Panasonic 12-60mm f3.5-5.6 currently for sale on eBay. lol It would be cool to see an episode of just vintage glass. It could also help as a prerequisite for the anamorphic video?
Hey Caleb, love your work. A few minor typos or errors there: the nikon mid zoom is AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8D ED. Video description incorrectly listed it as 28-80. The 80-200 has a few different versions, including AF AND AF-S. The one you have is AF 80-200 f2.8d two ring. Video description listed it as af-s, which is a different model, very rare, at a higher price point. The AF model you have does not af on the z series as FTZ adapter does not have screw driver af motor in them. You probably would not care as a video shooter though.
Thanks for another great video! Would it be possible for you to do a showdown between m43 adapters (Metabones knockoffs)? I have a Metabones and I need a 2nd electronic adapter but it is painful to spend the $650 for another .64x Metabones adapter. Thoughts?
Same here, and I sure hope so. There's a lot of rumbling around a 70-200 right now(which I'm hyped for), but I'd imagine they'll have a full spread of FE lenses considering the crazy success of the 28-75 F2.8
Do you think about renaming your channel to mirroless video shooter, because you make more stuff about mirroless cameras? Sorry, if I spelled something wrong, I am from Germany and not allways sure about English.
also a huge fan of those Russian lenses! Other ones to check out are the Mir 1B 37mm which is about 3x less expensive than the 35mm and still has a fantastic image at f/2.8, super long focus throw, and has no click. Mir also made a wide angle 20mm called the Mir 20M (f/3.5) that looks sick, trying to add that to my collection soon.
@dslrvideoshooter for videoing a Ignite Talk or PechaKucha at a conference what would you use on G7 or GH5 to grab a tight shot from back of room or side? A nikon with speed booster?
Caleb, I just wanted to let you know that only a few of your geni links work. I assume, they should take me to the "nearest" Amazon store, but they bring me to the main page of amazon.co.uk.
Thoughts on the sigma 16 f1.4 for the GH5. I have the 18-35 art with speed booster but looking for a lens for gimbal work. The 18-35 is just too front heavy.
Hey Caleb! Big fan, great name. My one question in regards to the 85mm options for Sony FE (given theres three options [sony 1.8, batis, GM]): Does the OSS of the Batis have any significant advantage as opposed to the non OSS 1.8? I have an a7iii (IBIS), but still wondering? And i'm staying clear of the 85 1.4 currently because of size/weight/price. Cheers! and once again; great name.
Hey Caleb, what camera did you use to film this with the Nikon 17-35mm? Was it the GH5? If so what adapter did you use with it? I am interested in that range for a manual lens with the GH5, or would you consider the Sigma 18-35 to be the better option?

Yeah, love the Nikon 'Bourne' f/2.8 ED zooms! Same for the Tokina ones that get you from 16mm up to 135mm that also have cinemodded versions. Gotta have some native glass in there. As a MFT shooter, the Lumix 12-60mm features weathersealing and OIS. Great value. If I would've picked up an A7III I would for sure have gotten the Tamron to go along with it! Hard to wrong with primes! Gotta love me indeed some affordable vintage stuff from Russia! Great Zenit lenses. Do love me as well some of that Contax Yashica Zeiss and Leica Summicron-R action. Or modern day... Laowa 7.5mm f/2 MFT was very nice as is say the ZY Optics Speedmaster 25mm f/0.95 (alternative to the chunkier SLR Magic) or a Voigtländer 17mm f/0.95.
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing some less popular lenses with us. I'll definitely be checking out the Jupiter 9 lenses. Regarding adaptors, will any M42 adaptor work, or will we need a speed booster for full frame?
The vintage Russian lenses(and maybe the Pentax before they switched to K mount) were designed for 35mm film and will have a full field of view on a full frame camera with just the correct dumb adapter(do look out for m39 lenses which looks the same but is slightly smaller and many of which were designed for range finders meaning they have like half of FFD). The Helios 44 will act like an 87mm on apsc without a speedbooster and a 116mm on m43. With speedbooster you get a 62mm f1.4 on apsc and a 74mm f1.2 with m43.
Hey, Caleb, great video! Could you recomend me some vintage lens for video with wide angle (bellow 28mm), apperture around 1.8 and maybe a good price? Thanks!
Sorry Caleb but to thoroughly recommend the Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8 like so without mentioning the really really bad focus breathing and focus by wire is a bit off to be honest for us video guys don't you think ? I mean, if someone bought one on your recommend and then discovered those two caveats they might well be a little upset. I know i would be.
