The weight those two cranes are lifting is impressive. Cool to watch the repair crew do what they do. What's even more amazing is the way large railroads can totally rebuild a damaged locomotive like this. The facilities, skilled people, technical know-how and resources is impressive.
The Cranemasters 200RS, 100 ton capacity, pick-and-carry, designed specifically for railroad recovery work. It even has an Oxy-Acetylene torch mounted on it, by design
I used to run a 265 ton highway crane, it could pick one of these locomotives up by itself but it used outriggers so there was no walking with a load on the hook. Did many traction motor changes with that crane, it was crazy having that much mass in your hands.
That was like a surgical operation by very well trained Doctors 👍 That was the coolest 👀 Train video 📹 I have seen since the Big Boy 4014 Hit the rails in 2019! When my Engines fall off the Track, I just put em right back! But that's a story for a different day What matters is that everyone was ok.
I've watched the loading of locomotives like this one , very interesting and intense . Those contract employees earn every cent they get paid and more . Extremely dangerous work .
I've only seen one locomotive that couldn't be rebuilt. It had hit an 18 wheeler loaded with a large crane so hard that it bent the 4 inch thick steel frame.
Wowsers, those locomotives looked really bad shape. Thumbs up. Keep up the perfect work, my friend, liked and subscribed, Greetings from Portugal to the USA.
Im surprised NS has any engines left. Every time I check my PC or the news all I hear is another train NS wreck. Seems like their are more NS locos on the west coast then back here.
As long as they're not legally forced to properly maintain their tracks and equipment, they won't. Short-term cost-cutting will continue to win out over long-term stability and safety, just like in so many other commercial areas, like what we're seeing with Boeing.
I worked at progress rail in Muncie Indiana. There was a crane on a track high above everyone. They picked up the finished locomotives daily above our heads. It was impressive lol
Ive,seen heavier engines, on these type of cars. No trucks, making them lighter, but taller. Longer wheelbase, on the cars, make it, work. All about, center of gravity. Great video
With the setup on the line pull must be weak having that many parts in the blocks in order to pick it up. That's a crawlers weakness over the side! And why the operator on the right keeps looking back at the tracks behind him! There both maxed out.
Spectacular video. Very dangerous job that these guys did. I take videos from the other side of the river of this spot and have been waiting to see when this would be done. I have seen more trespassers than I can count walking on the tracks and climbing on the wrecked equipment. MAS in the area is 50 mph. It’s amazing that no one has been killed out there and turned into vulture food. The spot where the video was taken is on a narrow one way mountain road with no space between it and the guard rail. As of last night there are still some remaining train cars there.
So after these are reclaimed, I assume they are taken somewhere, Altoona?, to be repaired or rebuilt. After that do the FRA and/or the NTSB have to pass them for mainline use? What about railcars, what happens to them?
around fortyt years ago the rail net work I was working at had a series of elderly EMD's converted to short hood and uprated power train. When A loco is damaged or modified ,they are stripped to the last nut and bolt and completely rebuilt from the tracks up .Cheaper than paying for new units. And as for inspections, all net works employ people to do just that and it's very nit picking because of the potential costs etc.
@@RailfanLandon8271just to add a bit, my brother in law wrapped/ rebuilt a field coil for one of of the NS machines in Altoona. We had to move the coil around the shop with a forklift. That’s just one small part of a locomotive engine. He did big electric motors for mines and cranes etc.
Those cranes don’t look like they’re big enough to lift the weight of half of a locomotive. Pretty sure it weighs about 400 tons. That’s 200 tons each. They don’t even have much counter weight on them WOW !! 😳 Maybe it only weighs 250 tons I can’t remember but it’s a lot of weight on those two crawlers that is for sure
Isn't it wise to think first before you start the job? what are those 20 men doing there? walk with the cable? why so many flat cars? this job doesn't look professional.
@@freezerguy Yes, I worked for years on the railways, and you shouldn't get angry, it's just that you are centuries behind when it comes to transport by train, both goods and passenger transport. I don't know why train transport doesn't get off the ground in the USA, that's a shame.
@@Peter-iz3gy If they upped their game to something approaching China or even Russia , it would transform the freight industry but while Warren Buffet is the boss ,money for development will never be obtained.
This is from my grandfather filming, that's why it's not full screen
He done real good job on that video, hats off to him.
@Ron-zi3cg definitely, I was in school unfortunately
The irony is I've had my phone in the horizontal position and went back to look at my footage on computer and it defaulted back to vertical
Grandpa's always do a good job.
Yeesh. That was bad!
I'll tell you the guys that do that really have their stuff together man. It's very impressive
It is
They sure do, ya gotta do that very, very carefully and with ease.

Even more than just the weight is thinking about getting both cranes to do that so together--some dance!😊❤
I never in my life new how that was done. Very impressive to watch that. Wow.
I didn't, either. Fascinating. Got to be expensive.
A wonderful, professional men. 😊 Teamwork. Never seen so many parts on a small hydraulic crawler crane before. Retired Ironworker #25.
Crane masters!

I would of thought the engine would of been to heavy for 2 crane crawlers...great work
When the 2 cranes in question have a 100 ton capacity each, it becomes more reasonable

I'm surprised that flatcar can hold the weight of an entire locomotive! Cool stuff!
That flatcar is a span bolstered 16 wheel car. it can easily carry that 185 ton detrucked locomotive.
Awesome video!!! Coolest thing I've ever seen. Pretty Heavy Load.

What's the cable those guys are pulling to the right?
Probably 1" to 1 1/2"
Those diesel engines weigh about 200 tons I believe. I guess quite a bit less with the traction motor units removed though.
Are these the two locos on the Lehigh river in Pa/NJ
Yes

Out of curiosity, what the hard hats pulling on the cable/hose doing ??? A+++ video. Subscribed. 👍👍👍
They are pulling cable out of the winch. They hook it to the flats and the crane reels it in to pull the flats under the engine.

Most likely repair
