In this week’s episode, we discuss Capture One's innermost editing secret that I use on every landscape photo I edit. This video is in response to a flurry of questions I received from the Capture One video I released a couple months back in June. I tried to answer as many of these questions regarding this as I possibly could, but it quickly became apparent that a dedicated video on the topic was warranted. And this frequently asked question was, "Is there a way to make highly targeted local adjustments inside of Capture One?". The short answer is yes, and in this video I'll review the different ways I do it and the problem that it solves. I hope you enjoy this week's episode and as always thanks so much for watching! - Mark D.

The control over local adjustments and masks is probably the main reason why I went to capture one and stay with it. You can do almost any adjustment with a local adjustment and the masking controls are fantastic. I think addition to the luminosity as you showed me you can create a mask based on color. For example if you wanted to increase clarity on just the orange but not the yellow parts of that flower, you can do that. Or, just on the shadow areas of those orange parts. You can refine the masks with further techniques they give you, or a invert the mask, copy mask from another layer, etc. Love it.

I started using Capture One because it had superior rendering from Fujifilm’s X-Trans images. Luma masks and style brushes are great. Thanks for showing this great photography tool and introducing it to more people. Very well done and super easy to follow video.

Love the shows and I'm a Nikon shooter! Always liked you, I am just confused why landscape photography has to be soooo edited. I'm NOT an expert at landscapes, but I do 99% in camera and have been using D100/D1 to now D6 and D850 combo with backup D5. I only used CP or CPL Polar Pro and some quick little edits. I've never once done any layers or removing objects or photoshop tricks. I guess as a Photojournalist that I don't get it, to each their own though. At what point is a photo no longer reality and just art? I appreciate single image captures in camera, minor edits...not composite's or photoshop combining layers, masks and all of the tricks. An images is either great in camera or it's not. You can edit some images and make them look better, but they'll never be GREAT unless they started great. So I don't even shoot most landscapes or sunsets I see here, because if the conditions atmospheric, temperature inversions, etc. I have a $1800 tripod and head, PMG 42mm Pro Stix legs and RRS BH-55, Zenelli gimbals and lens feet. I just prefer to use filters and in camera tricks or options and then be done. Few slider's if need, but too much and looks overdone. Much like advertising billboards or magazine images of super-models. I'd rather my images look real and beautiful and NOT fake or heavily edited.

Always enjoy your videos--thanks so much! I have learned to love LrC, Photoshop not so much. The ability to “intersect masks” in LrC seems to be very powerful. The options to “paint a mask” and “select the sky for masking” in LrC are incredible tools. Intersecting luminance with any other masking option was a game changer for me. Maybe I will stick with the 10,000-pound gorilla, LrC. Again thanks!

I had been using the magic brush to create masks but your point about creating a hard edge will have me rethink that. I do have a question that is off topic though. test the Magic brush on the flower image make an empty layer drag the brush down to zero in size click on the flower then only the flower is filled do the same on the parts that are under the flower. Alternatively draw a line and the flower will also fill the parts that are below the flower. it is easier and faster. But I think the first option works best on the flower. Magic tool is now more my favorite tool when it comes to masking parts of an image it works 85%
