Der Ausdruck "Like a Dog Chasing Cars" stammt aus der Szene, bei welcher der Joker sich mit einem Hund vergleicht, der Autos nachrennt. Damit betont er seine Unberechenbarkeit und seine Freude am Chaos . Er erklärt, dass er nicht voraus plane, sondern einfach Dinge tue, um das Chaos zu fördern. Der Vergleich mit dem Hund, der Autos nachjagt, unterstreicht Jokers rücksichtslose Natur und den Mangel an klaren Motiven.
Als Joker von der Polizei in Gewahrsam genommen und verhört wurde, befinden sich bereits der Bezirksstaatsanwalt Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) und seine Geliebte Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes) an bisher unbekannten Orten in seiner Gefangenschaft. Beide sind jeweils an eine Bombe mit Zeitzünder gefesselt. Nachdem Batman das Verhör des Jokers selbst übernimmt und die Namen der Orte aus ihm förmlich herausprügelt, gibt der Joker diese preis. Er sagt auch, dass die Orte so gewählt sind, dass nur einer von beiden Gefangenen gerettet werden kann, bevor die Bomben hochgehen. Sogleich eilt Batman zur Rettung von Rachel, während der Poliezeibeamte Gordon (Gary Oldman) verucht Dent zu retten. Beide wissen jedoch nicht, dass Joker die Orte vertauscht hat. Rachel kommt durch die Explosion ums Leben, während Dent in letzter Sekunde gerettet werden kann. Er wird jedoch im Gesicht schwer verletzt und wird ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert.
Währenddessen gelingt es dem Joker aus dem Gewahrsam zu entfliehen. Dieser such Dent im Krankenhaus auf. Dent, geplagt vom Schmerz über den Verlust von Rachel, wirft dem Joker vor, die Morde von Anfang an geplant zu haben. Der Joker entgegnet ihm: "Sehe ich aus wie einer, der immer 'nen Plan hat? Ich bin ein Hund, der Autos nachjagt. Ich wüsste garnicht, was ich machen würde, wenn ich eins erwische. Ich tue die Dinge einfach."

In a later scene, when the Joker is in police custody and being interrogated, District Attorney Harvey Dent and his lover Rachel Dawes are already held captive in undisclosed locations. Both are attached to time-triggered bombs. After Batman takes over the interrogation and beating their whereabouts out of him, the Joker reveals that the chosen locations are set up so that only one of the captives can be saved before the bombs detonate.
