      All art is subjective, giving me the right to interpretation. My interpretation is this:
      He is racist against white people, and wamts everyone else to be, too, making him a hypocrite. Furthermore, the only music more annoying than auto tuned mumble rap is dubstep, making his "music" total garbage.
      And finally, "Childish Gambino" can be taken to mean "immature thug" which isn't exactly something to be bragging about.
      I hope he
      O.D.s on Xanax.

    So you just gonna disregard the 17 seconds of silence that represent the fact that there was a minute of silence for every student killed at Stoneman Douglas. It's powerful because it shows you exactly how fast we move on from showing our respects to acting like nothing happened.
    This video is amazing and extremely thought provoking. I hope people aren't just watching it but also dissecting it the way I have been since it came out.

    The main thing everyone is missing is the third shooting. It might not be obvious but he tried to shoot a third time. The kids run away and he probably could have got at least one of them if he had a gun. The absence of the gun is what prevents the shooting. I know Americans like to argue that "Guns don't kill people, people kill people", but it becomes a lot more difficult. No one has ever committed a massacre single handedly with out the use of a gun, knives are useless from a distance and you have to be up close and personal, so the victim stands a chance at escape. Take a way guns and murder still exists but drive bys and high school massacres ect become a thing of the past.
    Also I clicked because I thought Childish was doing an "Official Lyrics & Meaning video", like I'd been waiting for. I don't think he ever will though.

    • @bennyjones1502
      @bennyjones1502 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mega0003000 i think that Gambino was aware of the inherent contradictions involved, and that they can both celebrate and condemn culture, whilst keeping in tension that people are both a victim of their circumstances and, through otherworldly determination, able to overcome that programming somehow. Countless stories attest to this. So it can be both an appraisal and serious pulling-up on an issue, and a making-aware.

    This is one of the most masterfully done videos for a Song that is as much of an anthem in our culture as ever was. In interviews, Glover is very quiet about the message in the lyrics and video. Given the polarization on racism in the US even today, it’s wise for him to let audiences and critics judge it not for whay he says about it, but what they personally can take away from it. All artists want their audiences to feel something, even their critics. This is nothing short of brilliance And our time.

    I think he was saying that while blacks are being oppressed and injustices are being done to us everyday, that we sit around and don't do anything about it. Its like he's saying that we would rather be entertained than fight for our cause. All were doing is shucking and jiving for the man. Just like the minstrel days all they considered blacks good for was entertaining. How people get caught up listening to music about being fly and dancing but dont stand for anything. Were ignoring the violence around us and forgetting out real struggle because we are being manipulated by social media and the media in general.

      How exactly are blacks in America being oppressed?

    • @salted6422
      @salted6422 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +mila renolds Doesn't oppression mean someone else is directly responsible for another's misfortunes? I don't think the lack of generational wealth or being poor means you're being oppressed. Some African-Americans were oppressed a long-time ago, but that doesn't give them the right to cause mayhem and oppress others as retribution today.

    Just read the lyrics with out the music and it's true poetry. Billie Holiday's song "Strange Fruit", made people uncomfortable too and had bold explicit lyrics but that's what art does. It provokes, opens your mind and starts an interpretation. Why hide the truth?

      The 4th of July usually is celebrated by uber-patriotism which generally revolve around a sanitized/white-washed version of who we are as a nation. I think that Glover is being a bit satirical in his statement, perhaps wanting the audience to not get caught up in the fictionalized version of the US. This is America.

    Personally, I thought the video was about gun violence, and racism in America like everyone else. But then I read a comment on the Insider's video that interprets Gambino as the current "black culture" in America. I won't go too far into detail, but in a nutshell. The man in the chair, and the choir symbolize past black culture. They're killed off, and we're left with Gambino who represents today's black culture as I've said before.

The music video might have symbolisms, but why do I have to watch the music video for the song to make sense to me?

    • @CatskillOne

      @@trystanfresh “Kendrick” ? Lol.
      Nobody was talking about “racism against the black” (a phrase which sounds racist. Wtf is “the black?” Just say “black people.”)
      You’re being disingenuous and misrepresenting what I said. You’re trying to say that symbolism is an essential component of music. I’m just saying that other rappers have addressed similar issues while also displaying better skill in wordplay, rhyming, and flow. You could disagree on that point as that’s completely subjective. Just don’t bring up other issues because I really wasn’t talking about any of that.
