@@nathanmachine- Thank you very much. I try to coax usable sounds out of as many settings as possible when designing, the Hiwatt definitely takes some guess work out of what I'm hearing. If something sucks, a Hiwatt will let you know haha.
@@MothElectric thanks man :) yeah i love these amps. Even though they can be "rude" like that, letting me know when my setup or playing sucks 😌 Incorrupta and Isabella should be getting here today. I have a feeling they will kick some stuff off the board in no time.
@@MothElectric I really love the sound of the C. Regalis! I use the H&K Grandmeister 36 for my distortion...but I think the C. Regalis might be able to add some other character to a low gain sound, especially if it's able to sustain grit at lower gain? I don't have too many audio examples to go by, but Pedals and Tea's demo sounds wonderful, thanks to his playing of course, and the Hiwatt, and whatever speakers he was using on his first Moth Electric demo a month ago. I might be interested in a purchase??!!
@@justinreynoldscomposer Hey, appreciate the interest. It's quite dynamic and responds to your pick attack and volume knob, so there's plenty of grit to be had at lower gain settings. I feel like the drive knob from 10 o'clock to 1 o'clock is where that kind of thing lives. It turns into more of a distortion past 2 and is more of a dirty boost before 10.
@@Beadlock_ thank you! Yeah I didn't see many videos with more "modern" tones so this was particularly exciting for me 👍 I don't know how accutately the QC model reacts but that's super cool, let me know how well it does!
@@TheLaughingMan04 they are really not that expensive in Europe, especially the late 70s 2 Input versions which I think is the best bang for the buck. I have both and while there are differences, both are incredible amps
Also the too loud for modern stages is about where I ran my Hiwatt live in the late 2010’s. it was loud but it was a stoner/doom band. That stuff played at quieter volumes has zero impact live. The volume is part of the impact of that music.
I always ran a dimed Matamp with my band for stoner/doom and only heard positive things about the live tones….i think part of it is that some amps really excel and sound their best cranked up but it’s a big, warm tone. Not harsh or grating so it doesn’t have the perceived loudness on the ears, it’s more of a vibrate your viscera kinda thing which is much more enjoyable for people to stand in front of. The grit from the phase inverter and power tubes being pushed is like a hug from Bigfoot, warm and fuzzy.
@@louderthangod My bands all play loud stage volume. That being said, I do know people who like the pushed Hiwatt tones but would absolutely need an attenuator for their gigs. Let's be real, for the Indiefolk/Pop/Americana gigs I play, I bring a smaller amp that I can push a bit. Lugging this thing there would a) make me look like a self-indulging douche and b) inconvenience everybody else due to size, weight and volume. Just overkill in those situations. That's why I put that sentence there. There's a right tool for the right job. :) With the HC/Shoegaze projects...yeah this one rips. And one of my favourite shows to see was also the loudest. Slift. A couple years back. Force of nature.
@PedalsandTea I tried so many of them and finally said eff it. If I get another one, it will probably be a Fryertte Power Station or St. Rock React: IR II though.
Love the Hiwatt! So is the Normal channel Low Input (top), High Input (bottom), or opposite? I briefly just watched your previous video comparing the amp plugin vs the real Hiwatt with high gain/fuzz, the difference was huge. Your amp sounds full, open and forward in the mix. The plugin sounded smaller, closed and further away, boxy. Both could work in a mix of course, but your amp sat much more forward and present in the sound field...it's a keeper, don't sell! Happy new year once again! Keep making music bud!
@@justinreynoldscomposer thank you! :) Yeah the bottom Input is louder on each channel. Not a huge fan of the plugin or modelers with pedals usually. Not necessarily for sound reasons but the feel is way off 🫠 Nah I won't sell :)
Great now I am looking at the twonotes you are using as that sounds great and I need a real world solution as hooking up a 1975 dr103 to a 412 isn’t a great home solution in 2025.
@@fiveways you can use any IR loader loadbox. The IR I've been using is Mix #5 (Md421, R121) from the York Audio Hiwatt Fane pack. For live I just use a 212 with Fane Medusa 150 👍
Great rundown. I usually do my initial designing on a Hiwatt before switching to dirtier amps because it's so honest with your signal.
no wonder the moth electric light OD sounds have such great textures
