Bread: It Don’t Matter To Me. Nice car. As I recall the deluxe models got the double tail light. The base cars were singles. I remember when I was a kid in the late 60’s my neighbor turned 16 and got a 1960 Galaxie. 1 week later: Totaled.

The rubber bumper guards also seem to be rare. I’ve never seen the front ones though so that was fun to see them here. I really like them. In another 1960 Ford video on TH-cam I mentioned the reflectors and someone told me they didn’t believe me because they had never seen them and I told them well I’ve seen them. In fact they’re in the 1960 brochure plain as day and there was an NOS pair available on eBay for around $500 a week or so ago. That amber front parking lens is not original…as it was clear I’m almost certain.

Hey Jay, This 60 Ford Sunliner is breathtaking inside & out!!! The beautiful tri tone interior & the black paint are museum quality!!! I would get the stock wheel covers out of the trunk & put them back on the car & get rid of those ugly wheels that spoil the look of this fine automobile!!! Thanks for sharing this exciting video!!! ⛄🎄🤶

My dad bought a used 1961 Ford Galaxie Sunliner. Color was bright red, with a white convertible top and white interior. Tires with the wide whitewalls. To my eight year old eyes, it was the most beautiful car on the planet. It had the 292 V8 with the two speed automatic and it performed very well. I have so many fond memories of that car. I never knew there were so many Fords sold in 1960. I always heard 1960 was an off year for Ford, which was why the styling changed for '61.
Anyway, this was a nice-looking car from that year. This particular one has a lot of bells and whistles not usually seen that year.
My mother owned a '62 Galaxie 500 four-door sedan. The dashboard was very similar to this one, and the back seat had a ton of room.

I think you heard wrong about thar being an of year for Ford. Even though I use to see more 59s and 62s, I saw a lot of 61s on the road and elsewhere on my travels. Ford introduced the Falcon that same year and sold just shy of a half million of them in the first year. All the car manufacturers were giving the Car body design complete makeovers every year back then

My parents had a Ford in those days with overdive. To engage you pulled out on the knob mounted under the dash. Then when you released the accelerator pedal overdrive kicked in. It would only apply in 3rd gear- (it was a 3 on the tree). The unit was a planetary gear design and the application mechanism was vacuum actuated. It would kick out of OD when you stepped on the clutch or if you pulled the trans out of gear.

The engine options included a 352ci 360HP (special mid-year release) engine that was run at Daytona in 1960. It included "solid lifters", large smooth-flowing cast iron exhaust manifolds, a paper air filter (a big deal in 1960) and dual point distributor. It also had a higher CR and as I remember, mechanical distributor advance. My Dad ordered a red convertible with what was supposed to be a 430ci Lincoln engine in Nov '59, we received the car in March '60. But, instead of the 430 Lincoln, it had this (360 HP-352 mill). We were kind of disappointed at first, but it had fairly acceleration. The car had "three-on-the-tree" stick and NO options, not even an AM radio! The car would have been a real screamer if a 4-speed was available and in the 2-door sedan body. It was a real "chick magnet", got to drive it everyday to high school! Those were FUN DAYS!

Both overdrives could be shifted like six speed transmissions and in third gear you could press the pedal to the metal, and it was as if there was a passing gear which of course was only a shift from overdrive to third gear, but it was really good for passing and extra power going up hills. Also, you could shift from low to second gear and second to third without using the clutch, carefully of course and certainly no speed shifting. Why, we did that I do not know for it surely wasn't necessary. Ah, youth. Why we did it? because we could of course!

The 352 Interceptor, FE family, was a wonderful engine. It was in our '64 Country Squire, the first car I drove on the Interstate. Plenty of relentless power, you could drive hundreds of miles and lay your hand on the valve cover and intake and leave it there. Cruise-O-Matic never failed. Tuning was easy; misfiring at idle meant plugs, under power meant points. I can set the timing, not running, without a light. Mufflers were behind the rear wheels, which threw everything at them, required annual replacement. Glasspacks were cheapest and made it sound so good. Relatively quiet, but a rev rattled windows. Inspired that Mustang GT sound, which sounds weak in comparison.

When you talked about model families in those days, when the first new "alternate" models were being added, car companies and customers referred to the regular, full-size car as the "standard" Ford, "standard" Chevrolet, etc. In their advertising, for example, Ford refers to the Falcon, Thunderbird, and Fords. When people talked about a '61 Chevy, it was implied that they were talking about the BelAir, Biscayne, or Impala...cars that used their standard full-size body shell, not about a Corvette or Corvair.

The overdrive has nothing to do with a "fourth gear" unless you engage after you are in 3rd. Then you might think of it as fourth even though it is not.
Think of overdrive as a separate transmission. Yes, you can run speed up in 2nd, let up on the gas and it will shift into overdrive. You can get the car up to a pretty good speed in 2nd while in overdrive, prior to shifting into 3rd.
The downside to the 3 speed with overdrive was that 1st wasn't synchronized. People that weren't very savvy shifters had a VERY hard time shifting down to 1st.
It was later that the Tremek "synchro-silent" 3 speed was offered. I have one in our F-100. Sure could use overdrive, though!

1959 and 1960 full-size Fords were NOT one-year body styles. The 1959 Ford was a continuation of the 1957/1958 Fords (except the short 116-inch wheelbase models were discontinued...and the windshield was bigger). The 1961 Ford full-size was heavily restyled below the beltline and the wagons no longer had the clamshell liftgate..but the other models did share the same greenhouse designs as the 1960 Ford and the engineering was carryover. Ford finally had a completely different full-size Ford for 1965.
Full-size Ford production for the 1960 model year was actually 911,000 units...the figure of 1.4 million units includes the 1960 Falcon and 1960 Thunderbird. Full-size Ford production for the 1959 model year was 1.5 million units....so the sleek new full-size Fords significantly dropped in popularity. The full-size Chevrolet for 1960 had approximately 1.39 million sales...significantly more than both Ford and Plymouth/Dodge Dart.

Look at Bonnevilles, giant square taillights with all kinds of trim on them. Next year? 2 tiny buttons. Caddy dropped the giant fins. Chevy drastically toned down the 59 fins. It had to have a pass from several states to be allowed on their roads due to it's width, without requiring yellow lights be placed on it's roof/top.
The tail lights. There were only the top ones, the lower were reflectors.
The other two item deal with the hood and front fenders. The hood was the largest of any hood ever made DUE to there being no top on the front fenders. The hood was the top of the front fenders.
I bought a 12 year old one with less than 20K miles at a neighbors farm auction when they retired and moved to town. It had the 360hp interceptor, 3 speed auto, and because I wasn't into owning a pickup myself-just used one of the farms pickups, it was kinda my farm work vehicle. The 60 was truly a clean design for the 60's compared to others. Chevy once again outsold Ford 1,653,168 Chevy, 1,439,370 Ford. Yet I think the Ford was a far better looking car. PS. In fact, for some slight side molding, they did look like that: same fenders, roof, dash, but with a different rear end treatment. And take a look at the 1960 Thunderbird (submarine). Sad, Ford had a good idea but didn't stay with it. I think they could have made a go of the Edsel if the pricing and quality control had been better. Oh, well, long lost chance now. Jay the name of the Group is Bread 🍞 Lead Singer David Gates I think 🤔 the title of the song was Waiting For You. The group was formed in the late 1960’s, I was 8 or 9 years old back then. It was a pop/soft rock group. Getting back to that 1960 Ford Sunliner Convertible like the 59 Galaxy 500 an only 1 year model Ride, then in 1961 to 1974 the branding was dropped in between the mid 1960’s to the 1990’s Ford added the LTD Package Line Up. But that 1 year body style especially for the coupe and the convertible top they were unique Rides at that time because again the dominance for the # 1 lead position of the space race was in high gear back then between the USA and Russia 🇷🇺 for the domination of space exploration. Think about the branding of the Ford 2 Rides The Galaxy 🌌 The Sun ☀️ liner. The Galaxy 🌌 is part of the Universe and the Sun ☀️ liner again the engineers at Ford had to come up with a name for their next model line up Ride. Sad to think 💭 Ford, Chrysler and GM had it going on back then i can sit back and tell what kind of ride a person was driving back then make or manufacturer, model, year.
Today I don’t even have a clue or know plus these cars today are made like sardine cans and they expect for today’s drivers of these cars to be be content and happy 😆 the way that these rides are built today.

If you could get the engine to rev high enough in first gear without bending all the exhaust valves, yes you could be in 1st overdrive. Most of the overdrive vehicles had a low ratio (high numeric) rear gearset like 3.70-1, 3.90-1 or 4.11-1, so 28 mph in low gear would have really been buzzing that ol' Y-block or FE.

  • @captaccordion

Overdrives of this era were a 2 speed epicyclic gearbox (similar deal to what's inside auto transmissions), which was attached to the rear of the usual 3 speed gearbox. When engaged, it would change from a 1:1 gear ratio to a taller 0.8:1 ratio or thereabouts. In theory it could turn your 3 speed into a 6 speed, with normal first, overdrive first, normal second, overdrive second, and normal third and overdrive third. In practice this was never done, with manufacturers allowing the overdrive to function in third gear only, or second and third, depending how they chose to have it work. And overdrive reverse was never a thing, as it would destroy the overdrive, so overdrives are always locked out in reverse as well as first. British cars would give you a switch to turn on or off the overdrive, and having a gearchange happen at the flick of a switch is a neat thing indeed. American makers were into the maximisation of laziness, and the overdrive came on by itself at certain speeds, with kickdown possible, which would turn off the overdrive. Also, a pull cable under the dash could stop the overdrive turning itself on. By the 80's, overdrives of this nature were made obsolete by the advent of the 5 speed gearbox, where the extra tall gear is 5th.

That confirmed stories I heard where if a car stayed around town the gear box only ever saw 2 gears used, Reverse and 2nd. 2nd OD was good enough for 45mph and still keeping the rpms down.

Hey, I had overdrive and it worked in all three gears. Shift into 1st gear and let up on the gas and it shifts into overdrive, shift into 2d and let up on the gas and it shifts into overdrive, and shift into third gear and let up on the gas and it shifts into overdrive. Yep, did it many times (and was well over 80 miles an hour by that time.) Besides that, floor the accelerator when under way below 60 MPH, and it downshifts (or upshifts into third gear) and you have one heck of a passing gear. Basically, I think that's what Ford's EO4D automatic transmission was all about.

Overdrive was not 4th gear it was a separate unit transmission still in the gear you put it in. So technically you could be in first over drive, second overdrive and third overdrive. Also it kicked out of over drive when you floored it for passing. Chrysler was fluid drive and didn't shift it's self. The fluid coupling allowed start in high gear so you didn't have to shift but it was very sluggish.
