Don't think it's an environmental thing. They still use 6 cylinder engines... V8s are good but are too heavy and the big downside to them (NA of course) is that their power isn't consistent at different altitudes and it puts too much weight on the front end
They are finnicky though, when you think about all the subframe issues and the highly strung s54. The m4 would be way way faster if you remove driver from equation. Now an e46 with a s85 v10... Well that is perfection for a M car

Great driving,i remember Tiff needell saying what a great cross country car this was in the top gear test,when it first came out,the m4 had the power,but the e46 chassis is so well balanced,combined with a very good driver,it was easy for him to keep up,and i still prefer this model to the v8 one,great vid.

I was quite surprised at this to be honest. The horsepower difference alone between the E46 and the F82 is 110, pretty much a third more power in the M4 than in the M3, a power difference which can be seen before the first Karusell and indeed on the Dottinger-Hohe straight, but in the bends the E46 was pretty much just as quick. Fair play to you, great driving!
Agreed, the M4 obviously shows its power advantage in the longer sections, but it doesn't seem to handle any better, or have any traction advantage in the bends. Certainly I suspect the E46 chassis can take a little more power and even a subtle turbocharger on the M3 would bring it bang up to date. Still think the E46 M3 is one of the greats though, right next to the E39 M5.
I think that it only show's the difference in the skill's of the drivers. Maybe the M4 driver wasn't that familiar with the car yet. But thats just a guess.

Great driving mate! Who are you on cutters? What Geo/Allignment settings you running? What width are your wheels, might give 275 square setup a try but dunno if they fit 18x9 ok?

The Geo/Allignment on my car are done by Tom Schirmer, i really don't know what is the setting.... my wheels are 18x10.5, i wouldn't recommend you to go 275 on 18x9 it's not ideal and i think you will have some tyre roll. send me a pm if you want to have a chat Regards Mor
The e46 m3 is the best bow has made....you put coil overs in them and I have seen multiple videos of non-professional drivers beating the professional time of the m4
E46 m3 drive just outclassed the m4, e46 driver took the better lines every time.. if he was in a csl maybe the m4 might not of had a chance. Great vid :)
Great video and excellent driving! I have coached high performance/track driving, and you are very smooth. I have a modified E46 M3 pulling 400 hp at the crank. Left the front stock except for urethane bushings everywhere. Replaced the stamped steel rear control arms with adjustable tubular arms. Carbon fiber hood (does not save much weight, but the louvers do help cool the engine). Since 1968 I have had about 60 cars, most of them high performance, and I consider this the best one ever. Better than the C5 Z06 Corvette it replaced. Yes, the Corvette handled a bit better, but my modded M3 matches it in acceleration, per data acquisition I have used in time trials and autocross. Plus it is overall of a higher quality. My only complaint is that it is a PAIN to work on. Had to replace the clutch recently, and with the SMG tranny that took longer than on any other car I done that on, including the programming.
The E46 M3 with the KW V2 coilovers seems to be a much better handling car than the M4 presented here. Not to mention the E46 M3 driver is a better driver as well. But the power that the M4 had was pretty impressive. There isn't enough room in this track to use the power the M4 has, and that's the reason why the E46 M3 stock motor was able to keep up, and pass.

E46 M3 has one of the best sounding engines of any BMW besides the M3 CSL
it's the same engine in the CSL...
