Thank you STEVEN TYLER for founding Janie's House, a shelter for abused girls and women. :-)
Robin, ABSOLUTELY!!!
Anything for men?
yeh, odd how he got custody of a 16 y old when he was in his late 20s, did drugs w her, got her pregnant, pressured her to have his baby, forced her to then have an abortion she didn't want after a suspicious fire was lit in her apartment.
Matt Laugle no because Janie’s house is for women and has been for several decades
I saved all the puppies at plumbsteads house, she was going to kill them all so I stole them and run. Rip the kids that one maybe did this to my friend
This song was written by Steven Tyler and bassist Tom Hamilton, video directed by David Fincher, influenced by an article in Newsweek about children being abused in affluent suburbs. The music video, in 1989, was ground breaking at the time, impassioned and skillful. Steven Tyler's fantastic raspy vocals hit the right balance between sympathy and righteous anger. And Joe Perry, as the rest of the band, excellent as usual. The taboo subject, child abuse, infrequently covered before by a top tier band (exception of Benetar with Hell is for Children in 1980) was certainly done justice. Much needed, and long time in coming.
Fincher was the master at music videos. Every one a masterpiece, and so well edited, lit, etc....
This is a hard truth, but if anyone has had a child who was abused, or relative, or was abused as a child, and the perpetrator got away and unpunished (as they often do) this song seems to give a vicarious retribution to the caregivers/relatives of the harmed, the victims, which is something they have until justice, someday may be delivered. And of course, the Lord, who says "Vengeance is mine, I will repay'.
@@annablyst6754 Agreed.

It still blows me away how the drums are not just part of the "sound" of the song like a normal song. they are both telling the story and PART of the story. the delicate accent in the cock of the hammer, the loud percussive SNAP of the drums to mimic the sound of the shot, and finally the soft "click" of the hammer fall on an empty chamber. To this day i believe it to be the greatest use of drums to tell a story ever.

The detective doesn't get enough credit in this story. He successfully puts together just what happened, and upon seeing Janie, rather than treat her like a criminal and force her into handcuffs, further traumatizing an already deeply shocked young girl, he puts a blanket on her shoulders and helps her to his wagon. I wish more cops were like that.
They're everywhere. You just don't hear about them on the news.
Most cops are like that.
Don't judge one bad experience with all the good cops out there working in the worst conditions. Hey the brothers in Blue are always there...forget the one offs.
However he went home to his wife, kids, home, and middle America life. Everyone moves on. And when all you've ever known is the fake world of a wacho. Jamie ended up alone on a unhabitabled planet. Thanks for the blanket

Holy shit this song is so deep as an adult
Always been so glad Aerosmith wrote this song. So many people find themselves in terrible situations (not only child molestation) which are not of their making. Many have no voice, or are not believed when they speak out. Artists & celebrities are in a unique position to be able to speak for those who are overlooked & ignored. They're able to shine a spotlight on harmful behaviors often hidden in the dark. Many thanks to Aerosmith, & especially Mr. Steven Tyler, for his "Janey's House" program. God bless you, guys, & those whom you help.
Yeah he put his money where his mouth is was not virtue signalling.
@@annalisavajda252 Virtuous Steven's not - kind & generous he is. Thanks for your comment.
Love the music
Yeah, terrible situations like the 14-year-old girl went through when Steven trafficked her.
@@FarmersAreDummies Julia Holcomb was 16 yrs. old when Tyler had his relationship with her in 1975. I make no excuses for his subsequent behavior toward her, & the fact that she was considered a minor at the time, legal age of consent being 17 yrs. old. I will submit that 47 yrs. ago, cultural mores & attitudes were not the same as they are today. Even today, a minor can be legally married with parental or guardian consent. Tyler has always been wild, but I suggest that his establishment of all the "Janie's Houses" is his outward recognition of his faults, & an attempt to atone for them. There is no doubt the Houses provide care & support for thousands of young people today.
I never realized what this song was about until I read the lyrics. Wow. Cheers to Aerosmith for tackling a hard subject that needs to be paid attention to, especially today with all the stories hitting the news about abuse.

*We need the classic rock back in this generation*
You right ,but all You can get this days is Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj, 😂
I'm seeing a trend, watch the reaction videos up here to the classics. They're seeing it, theiy're sharing it. The best thing we, those of us who grew up on this stuff, can do is share. Tell them "new" songs to listen to. Let them know there's a lot of great stuff out there, they just need to watch and react. That gets it out to the next generations (and some of the past ones too). I went looking for this song when a guy named No Life Shaq did a reaction to Run DMC-Aerosmith's Walk This Way and the great Dream On. He was asking for more and I wanted him to see this one.
We show them the good stuff (and there are a LOT of reactors out there in TH-cam land) and they share, then people get to see what we love and why. And...in most cases, they're absolutely floored by it.

My father used me several times in the ways a husband should only do with his wife(my mother). I am in my 50’s now, and I am married, but still feel so dirty. I am so thankful that Jesus loves me and will never stop😊. Jesus understands how I feel and HE does not want me to feel dirty, but I am slow to let go of feeling dirty in HIS eyes, yet HE has, and never will forsake me as many others have. In Jesus eyes I am not dirty/filthy, it is only me that feels dirty/filthy. I always remember this: Jesus Christ has never done anything to me, Jesus Christ has done everything FOR me. My father WILL stand before The Lord and give an account for his CHOICES, he has gotten away with nothing.

This song really hits home for those of us that were abused by those that should have protected us. This song in a way saved me and gave me piece, as Janie did what I longed to do, but couldn't. This song brought the issue of sex abuse to the forefront when I was younger. It helped me feel less alone too. Im glad this song came out and really at the time caused others to see a problem that used to be swept under the rug. Later they opened Janies House for abused kids.

I have to agree. It's really strange, especially in light of the fact that this is not one-hit wonder stuff. It took quite a few years for the band to get to this stage in songwriting. Which is not to knock their early stuff, it's just a progression of their capabilities.
Walter Pewen I disagree.
It breaks my heart in a million pieces that there are children out there who experience this living hell of a life. I've never experienced this type of abuse, but it hurts my heart and fills me with indescribable rage, just knowing that it could be anyone. Aerosmith has been my favourite group since I can remember, because they make the greatest music and also because they have heart, and they use their gift of music to advocate for the voiceless. I'm not sure if this will be read, because it's been a year, but if it is, God bless you guys and thank you so much for your fantastic music and the joy it brings. Here's a funny story about this song. I was in line at the DMV & they were playing a lot of my generations great music. Even the guard was getting into it. When I got to the front of the line by the guard, he told me his funny story. He saw a kid who was coming in for his very DL wearing an Aerosmith t-shirt. The guard said "Janie's got a gun". The kid said "WHERE?!". So he had to explain that it was a big hit for Aerosmith. He said "who?". "You're wearing their logo. Don't you even know who they are?" The kid said, "No. My Mom & Dad went to Vegas to see some concerts of old music (yeah, he said OLD music!) & all they brought me was this t-shirt." "So why are you wearing it if you don't even know who they are?" "Because it was the only clean shirt I could find". Then everyone in line cracked up! The DMV actually made everything very easy for me that day. The next day, I brought the whole staff a big platter of cookies as a thank you. The guard was already on a break so I asked a woman if she'd bring him a couple. She asked if he'd know my name & I said "Just tell him "Janie's Got A Gun. He'll know!" So she went in the back & less than 30 seconds later, I could hear him laughing loudly. Sometimes in life, it's those small shared moments that can really make you feel good about life.
I was a sexually abused teenage, 13. In 1973, things were swept under the carpet, or in my mother's case, ignored. My step father, was the perpetrator. I relate to this, because I was going to dose his coffee with rat poisoning. I didn't, but he died of a heart attack, at 59 years old. I never shed a tear.

All of the under age groupies Steven Tyler was with in the 70's...no, this is about incest.
especially in the time period this was from, late 80s and early 90s, before we had all the huge movements that spawned thanks to internet, back when it was even easier to sweep victims of abuse under the rug, this 'lady's man' and his band wrote a song supporting women's ability to stand up to abusive scum when possible, and showing the dark side of the worst form of child abuse and how even when they take power back into their own hands in the most violent of ways they can never reclaim what was taken from them psychologically. like, steven tyler got it, got every last thing about it. he wasn't just some poseur trying to get into women's pants by pretending to care, he actually wanted women to be able to stand up for themselves or get help in bad situations, and he understood that those who've been through abuse in early childhood would 'never be the same' because of it and they'd suffer the rest of their lives. it's great that the band used their success to raise awareness of such an important topic. this was one of those things that really stuck with me from childhood and took a long time for me to fully realize what the song and video were about despite it being plastered literally everywhere when i was a kid lol. i'm not a huge aerosmith fan or anything but when they did stuff like this it would be stupid not to have some respect for them.

The lightning and the thunder
Knew that someone had to stop the rain
Run away
Run away from the pain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away
Run away from the pain, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away
Janie got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
What did her daddy do?
It's Janie's last IOU
She had to take him down easy
And put a bullet in his brain
She said: 'Cause nobody believes me
The man was such a sleaze
He ain't never gonna be the same
Run away
Run away from the pain, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away from the pain, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away
Janie's got a gun
Janie got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Now everybody is on the run
Janie got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run (honey, honey, what's the problem?)
'Cause Janie got a gun (tell me it ain't right)
Janie got a gun (was it daddy's cradle robbing that)
Her dog day's just begun (made you scream at night?)
Now everybody is on the run
Janie got a gun
Janie got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
her mother knew and closed her eyes to it. She was just as guilty.
Yes.
i can`t agree with you more!
Same. My mom. STILL trying to lie and say she didn’t know...but you know, she had a lifestyle. When I would hear her saying (after he left her) that she had it all I just wanted to bitch slap her!!
She cared more about her lifestyle than her own flesh and blood.
yep.
Loved this song in high school. Now I'm really listening to the lyrics years later. What a masterpiece.
This song means so much to me, i am a man who was abused and my revenge was this song. Boys are abused sexually everyday and i wish i could protect them but i can't, people don't know how this can make their lives a hell
Wow. That's terrible..I'm glad you made it through.
💔💔💔 people are just so damn evil. Boys that are abused get far less attention. In any case, no one should ever be sexually assaulted. The more I see, the more I never want to leave the house. My heart breaks for you. I hope you find peace and can move forward and have happiness. And even better, see the karma bus run that scumbag over.
@@morticiaheisenberg9679 you can leave your house. Don't be a drama queen. Dont use every random bad story as an excuse to become a recluse. There's plenty of bad in the world but there's also plenty of GOOD.
Im sorry that happened. You are loved ❤️
You are not alone I wish you the best that life can give you Peace !
Hands down, the best song in Aerosmith's repertoire, and I'll be bloody damned if this isn't one of the best music videos ever made!
Otherwise, this video is anything but well edited. Total confusion...
i would say that this is a very good music video, but its not one of the bests. imo, the best is GNR"s "November Rain", but I can see y u like this mv so much
It's David Fincher btw
David Fincher directed it.
Not that great of a song and video when compared a classic like “Dude Looks Like A Lady”.
This song got me through my teens after years of sexual abuse. 🤜🤛 to everyone that's survived childhood trauma
Much peace and healing to you darlin.❤️
🙏❤️
Needed to hear this. I am a survivor of all forms of abuse, at the hands of both parents. Though violence begets violence, this dog's day has just begun....
I m Sorry for u
too bad tyler is a pedophile himself, really ruins the song for me.
The haunting yet overlooked end lyrics at 4:56 - “Honey, honey what’s your problem? Tell me it ain’t right. Was it daddy’s cradle robbin’ that made you scream at night...”
WOW
Thanks for this, I always wondered what the lyrics were at the end.
I'd always wondered. So many layers hid it away
Still listening in 2024
Let me tell you something, I fell in love with this song as a kid, to this day, I still love this song
This was one of the very biggest hits from the summer when I graduated high school. My brother and I shared a 1985 chevy cavalier, and I installed a Sony AM/FM with a caseete in it, along with a set of pionerr 3 way 6x9's in the back, and a set of Sony 4 inch tweeters in the front. Let me tell you, my 17 year old ears were very sharp, and this speaker system SCREAMED in this cheap old car.
me too lol
I remember sitting in my 1984 chevy cavaier, with a set of 3 way sony 6x9 and a set of 4 inch dash speakers. That sony 25watt am/fm cassette player was really kickin,...my mom, beeing the narcissisic bitch that she was, was screaming that I was ruining my ears. I dd not give a shit, this was cool.
Same Thing here lol
Same here. My babysitter took me to her girlfriends house and they had this album on heavy rotation at that time.
This song has one of the most slamming and expressive intros I've ever heard - That bass, vocal, drums, interesting sound effects etc.... Grateful there's a place where girls can go to today. Thank you. 💗
Totally!!!!!!!!!
John Travolta Movies, great fan...die Tochter des Generals, german titel, film, movie....#
To jest cudowna muzyka
❤❤❤❤
Don't forget the keyboard riff, which is the main part of the intro.
25 years later I realize I was too young to appreciate how wonderful this band was. From the difficult topics they brought into light, the music being masterpieces. Not even wanting to compare what we are listening nowadays.
Steven Tyler has one of the most incredible voices EVER
Much love ❤❤❤❤❤
Definitely distinctive and one of a kind 😅
@@stacyward4309 Thank you for your kind words
I have watched this music video more than 100 times.
I memorized each lyric of this song.
It hurts to know what Janie had been through.
And still there are another Janie suffering in PAIN.
...
At first listen this song seems simple yet when you really listen to it it’s truly one of the most well written emotional songs in history - what a fucking masterpiece
Multiple replays every time this song comes up for me.
Fun fact: David Fincher directed this music video.
He's come a long way since then.
Ohh..amazing fact..Guess these vids wr signs off future gr8 works tht wr to come.
alien 3
Amazing that they released this song when they did no one was putting music out about this stuff took a lot of guts as a band to release a song about this when they were literally at the top of their game.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Steven Tyler has just opened his "Janie's House", to help abused women. Thanks Steven.
And now number 2 house is open with a third on the way
@@jaidedragon4646 Ironic seeing as he got a 16 year old girl pregnant and then insisted she got an abortion while he sat in the waiting room snorting cocaine.....
Steven is awesome!
@@jaidedragon4646 If the girl in question was your daughter, you'd be singing a different song.
I'm so. Proud of him
No autotune, no attitude, no fancy clothes. Just jeans and t-shirts, plus the most talented musician on the planet.
I'm afraid Tchaikovsky's cannonneer is nowhere in this song, so it didn't have the world's greatest musician.
It doesn't have freddie mercury so no
@@emitwilson8906 Freddie is good but not to be compared with Steven. Steven is on a totally different dimension from Freddie. Both are the good in their own universes.
@@nahiyanalamgir7614 as musicians Steven is better but singing easily goes to freddie
Freddie mercury is up there on my list sting with steve
0:11 One of the best intros in Rock history, love it!
One of the best SONG in rock history!
Anyone here in 2024?
Hello
Hell yeah! Great song.
Yo ,joder. Dónde mejor?
Meeee
I am I love this song 💕
Can we all take a moment to appreciate Joe Perry's guitar playing in this song. It's incredible!
That will be difficult. Because in many songs, it is always friggin incredible.
My favourite Aerosmith song, so dark and the music is awesome! The gunshot drums are on point!
I drive for a living and the song came back in to mind.....now I play ▶️ it 11 on the volume.....great song with dark subject.
favorite ***
He just opened a house for sexually abused girls named “ Janie’s house”. God bless this kind hearted man my idol “Earosmith forever!!!
Don't be naive
"Earosmith" tho
Danial Zaini why? What the hell is so naive?
Long live janies house
@@YoMama9021 He was on Jeffrey Epsteins flight log list to his phedo island. Wtf do you think.
There are only a few things in life that genuinely, absolutely perplex me. One of them is the fact that this song doesn't have 1 Billion views at this time.
It took a lot of stone's to write a song about something that (unfortunately) happens every day,
But no one wants to talk about 🤗
I thank God for Aerosmith- Thank you for acknowledging my pain 🥰
First time I heard this song,I cried and cried tears of relief, acknowledgement.Thank you Aerosmith, can you come get my Dad now/
I loved this song even for it's subject matter and dark content. To me it's one Aerosmith's best songs.
It is even though
In my youth I found the intro of this song ("The Water Song") frightening, as it lead into the steady chanting lyrics of "... What have you done?" It is perfectly bookended by the harmonies which leads the listener out of the song ("Honey, honey, what's the problem..."), leaving you with an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of your stomach. The marriage of the song and the music video was brilliantly done, especially during the chorus of "Run away...", with its "Psycho"-esque violin stabs punctuating the image of Janie running through oncoming traffic. This was one of the more powerful uses of this early medium of storytelling, and it has withstood for over 30 years. Thank you, Aerosmith.
Aerosmith was even bigger in the nineties than they were in the 70's.
It took a dream
It's 2018 and still listening to this!
I get chills song at part where Tyler drops his mic to the side then Joe Perry just blasts his guitar after that...about 2:45...Damn!
Powerful song!
Grease sound track
Holy shit
Im listening to this in my car right now and just said to myself how this song beings chills up my spine. then read your comment right after lol
The whole song is still giving me the chills..
I didn't experience sexual or physical abuse from my father, but the emotional and even at 30 to this day is unreal. Love this song and the story it holds. Definitely timeless
My dad introduced me to all the hard rock bands he liked when I was a kid. In 2010 and now I'm proud to be listening to hard rock and roll music
At 3:02 this became one of the greatest solos of all time ❤
Here are the lyrics-
Dum, dum, dum, honey, what have you done?
Dum, dum, dum, it's the sound of my gun
Dum, dum, dum, honey, what have you done?
Dum, dum, dum, it's the sound
Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her whole world's come undone
From lookin' straight at the sun
What did her daddy do?
What did he put you through?
They said when Janie was arrested
They found him underneath a train
But man, he had it comin', now that Janie's got a gun
She ain't never gonna be the same
Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
Tell me now it's untrue, what did her daddy do?
He jacked a little bitty baby, the man has got to be insane
They say the spell that he was under the lightning and
The thunder knew that someone had to stop the rain
Run away, run away from the pain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away from the pain, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away
Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
What did her daddy do?
It's Janie's last I.O.U
She had to take him down easy and put a bullet in his brain
She said, "'Cause nobody believes me, the man was such a sleaze"
He ain't never gonna be the same
Run away, run away from the pain yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away from the pain, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away
Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Everybody is on the run
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
Because Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run
Janie's got a gun
Janie's got a gun
Steven Tyler nailed from the beginning to the end of the song.
Thanx mate I live in New Zealand orsome for the liricks spelled it wrong I think
Its the "dum dum dum" in the beginning of these lyrics for me ...
This song hurts....I remember watching this with my dad right before I moved out at 16. I remember looking into his soul and sending a clear message that it was going to be him or me that wouldn't be around much longer. But God!!!! God sent Aunt Sharon to rescue me and give me a different option, a way out. I wonder how things would have turned out if she hadn't of come.
I sincerely hope your life is better now. * internet hug *
@@kahnadah thank you.... I'm 48 now and just now dealing with the trauma of it all but thank you very much for caring💜

1989. This song has really stood the test of time. Thank you, Aerosmith
Hamilton is the most underrated bass player and Brad is most underrated guitar player. The bass lines on the whole pump album are crazy good.
Definitely.
This is one of the few old school artists still putting out music and that's a good thing. Like Mick Jagger Steven Tyler will never retire. Rock legends continue on
When I first heard this song as a kid, “the spell that he was under… the lightning and the thunder…” made me think this was partly a supernatural horror. The nightmarish feel only strengthened when I found out it was a much more real hell…
One of my favorite Aerosmith songs
is good, listen to "Jesus is on the mainline" too, sister
This was the song back in 1989 I love this track
Great song. Brave lyrics. Creative musical arrangements. Congrats, Aerosmith.
I do appreciate this guy. His voice and moves. Legend Steven Tyler!
I remember when i listened to this when i was little on the family i pad. everyone judged me but, dang i had good taste
the background to this song is informational, and it completely skipped over my head as a child
I know right! Im black and i get judged cause i like rock and metal. But i don't like country. Its not my style. You know?
Damn im only 22 and i feel aged
@zuriel p yeah I’m 15 and am the same
Bro same and I’m 14😂
David Fincher directed this music video for this song just before he directed movies like The Game and Fight Club. He also directed music videos for other artists like George Michael, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, and A Perfect Circle.
This video and song was ahead of its time. To those survivors still standing today - I stand with you.
Thank you from Diane 🙏
Not only a kick arse song with magical keyboards by ST but a very very heavy subject that I am glad they brought to the front. Best memories around this album.
I'm 13yrs clean now. But in my active addiction me & the girls I used with would blast this & drive down a windy road non stop.. they said I was Janie. Replacing her name with mine. Growing up molested non stop, never having a voice. Somehow this song gave me what a needed, freedom for those however many minutes.
A lot more I could say
.. but God Bless You Janie!
You Are A Hero!!❤💜💜
I'm not sure, perhaps AS emancipated a young women from her familys abuse? ❤❤❤This song resonates with me, I hope he was a savior too the young women he sings of! Either way this song has so much meaning to so many! Music fulfills the soul and eases the mind!❤
I love Steven Tyler. This song is so so good❤
Much love ❤❤❤❤❤
From 4:58 till the end the song always gives me chills.
Same!!!!!!
2019 thank you for founding Janie’s house shelter for abused girls & women . I definitely understand this situation without having nobody to turn to when there’s abuse & etc.. thankful for people like you and foster care .❤️👏🏽
So this is a song based on a real event??? Tragic how many times the justice system has failed these victims but the justice system sure as hell had no problem prosecuting the victims when they end the abuse themselves like this girl did. That's a shame. They should have helped this girl because the last time I heard sexual abuse and assault IS A CRIME!!!
