Karnataka is one of the biggest economies in India, marking its presence alongside Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu. As a result of the IT boom in Bengaluru, the services sector contributes a major share to the economy.
The report, authored by TV Mohandas Pai titled 'Karnataka: A $1 Trillion GDP Vision' proposes a 13-point socio-economic agenda, different strategies to drive Karnataka towards achieving the same.

Delightful talk. We need more thinkers like this pan India level so India can catapult it self into no 3 economy. 🙏
I wish my Kannadiga brother's & sisters all the wishes power to exceed 1 Trillion dollar economy how ever please start from your Infrastructure roads traffic jams it may become extremely difficult after a decade if nothing is done on that aspect
Best wishes from Telangana
Don't worry brother, We know we will get there and yes we do have some constraints with our public transportation but Rome was not built in a few days but come 2025 once the metro network, suburban train and satellite town ring road is built it will be a thing of the past and will also be the countries economy hub surpassing Mumbai while Telangana can play Catch up.
@@k-map224 wish you the very best
In 25 years India GDP should be -
1% of agriculture
49% services
50% industry
Bengaluru m infrastructure bnna chaiye billion of dollars ka tbhi traffic jams khtm hoga
Maharashtra has reached the halfway of a Trillion $ this year...!
Yes, there should be a healthy competition between all states, no one should be jealous of each other.
I hope states like Karnataka,Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, UP, Gujarat, etc reach 1 trillion dollar economy very soon.
Here's the confusion...Central govt is aiming for 5 trillion! They should all sit together & work it out :-)
Yeah absolutely. I see that happening in another 13-15 years.
India have to become 30 trillion dollars economy in 25 years
If OUR KARNATAKA reaches $1 Trillion economy, I will be the most happiest person in the world , that will be heaven on earth for me
Good insights from Mohandas ji.Our administrative bureaucrats are still going for courses in social engineering and IIMs.They must be trained enough from best port cities of world and India, best agri economies in West and India etc..Currently they are trained mostly from outside the nation on every aspect. But,they must undergo a training once in 2-3yrs within the nation.
The hosting kid is scared to go to Tamil Nadu. 29:19.
FYI: TN is number 1 tourist destination in India, I guess Mohan das Pai and this host kid have to get out of Bangalore at least once in their lifetime.
I am from Mumbai, Maharashtra but I wish Karnataka good luck to touch the trillion mark healthy competition should be there within the states so that indirectly the country benefits very nice initiative
Two great visionaries for making Karnataka and by the way India. Thank you 🙏 Swarajya
Tells you how policy needs to be thrashed out by putting real numbers on the table. Often the numbers,by themselves reveal a pattern and suggest a solution. We need more such unbiased reports for different States and objective analysis to provide inputs to State Governments. They may or may not be listened to, because of "political compulsions", but the people will become aware of the State's failings and hopefully provide the impetus to pressure Governments. Great discussion with Mohan Das Pai & Nisha Holla. Great job Swarajya!!🙏⚘️
Always a pleasure to watch Mr. Pai. His clarity of thought amazed me.
What an excellent discussion. Thank you Swarajya!! I am going to listen again !!
Mr Pai ,Please lead Karnataka along with whole India to 20 trillions economy . All the best . We need people like u not foreign educated poverty loving economists .
It is called redistribution of income
Bangalore and all Indian cities seriously lack proper urban planning. Our cities are a complete mess. We need world class urban infrastructure. Unplanned urban growth is making our cities unliveable. Garbage, dysfuntional traffic, polluted air, flooding, sewage... our cities are shameful! Our cities need to be clean & green. We need extensive high quality electric public transit. Car culture is a disaster for densely populated country like India. It will only worsen the traffic & pollution situation. We need trees, parks, clean lakes, waste management etc to build great cities. Citizen engagement & involvement is critical to make this happen.
Made my day! ✨👌
Karnataka ❤️💫
Best pai...well said sir
Fantastic interview. Kudos to MDP n madam
For improving agriculture in North Karanataka main backup would be water canals , and trades of agriculture goods in Karnataka we stay near to Maharashtra and all over agriculture goods transferred thier
We must root out corruption at every level in BBMP. Then only there is a ray of hope that Bengaluru will see true improvement in standards of living and quality of life to sustain the growth and prosperity. Better still, Government should seriously consider dismantling and closing that monstrous/terrible organisation with no accountability/responsibility. Instead Government must focus on digitising most of the mundane activities besides building more number of smaller bodies with service minded people with set targets and hold them accountable.
Lack of vision and foresight, heavy corruption, poor professional skills in building and managing civic amenities of this evil BBMP has been the Achilles heel of Karnataka's economy for decades! India will thrive if BBMP is closed down. Time has come to end it ASAP.
31:47 T.V. Mohandas Pai after having spoken for 30 mins in a 40 mins segment. 🙂
In order for Karanataka to be $1 trillion economy from current $300 billion has to grow by 18 percent if it's till 2030 or 11-12 percent if it's till 2035.You need massive investment upto $100 billion in various sectors like Services,Manufacturing and Agriculture. Each has to grow by 35 percent per annum and 12 cities like Chikmagalur,Chikballapur,Mandya, Hassan, Mangalore,Manipal, Belgaum,Hubli, Kalaburagi, Mysore, needs to be upgraded like Bengaluru. For this a massive spending in Law and Order, Employment genaration, Setting up of Industries,Healthcare and Education needs a massive boost.Employment has to be given to at least 15 million people only then it can achieve it's target.
Government and people are not being taunted here but just the facts are being highlighted because still Karnataka has yet to reach $500 billion that's possible by 2028 and 1 trillion will be achieved in 2038 only. For Karnataka a massive road, air and water connectivity is a must.Mangalore, Karwar and Manipal should have huge mega seaport.Kalaburagi Region has to be given a lot of attention. Then perhaps Bengaluru can reduce its traffic and overpopulation issue.I dont know how,but I wish Kannadigas and Karnataka people all the best
1. We need to create a New Bangalore of 5 million capacity north of Devanahalli. Bangalore is bursting at its seams. It will be decades before Hubli-Belgaum catch up especially in High Tech sector. Climate cannot be replicated.
2. Unless private sector takes the lead. Depending on Govt will not deliver in time. Moreover Govt is reactive. We need to Pro-active
3. Bangalore citizens especially those from other state should vote to elect honest, progressive politician to address the problems of Bangalore
4. Dependence on states like Bihar/Odisha to provide the labour will lead to social tension in future as it has happened in Maharastra
5. Entirely agree about creating a stronger social net for an ageing population. The biggest sufferers of Bangalore’s development are Retirees. Their woes must be addressed. Even for the labour, proper and honest implementation of existing legislation like ESI, EPF, Arogya Shri, Workmen’s Compensation Act. Presently they are tools of harassment of the Labour dept
6. To create Hubli as National Education Centre in Hubli needs the Private sector to lead
7. Last but not least, we need a movement for an Honest Karnataka
Great Conversation
your first statement is obsoulte true you would not told without proper intelli inside . whats your source ?
New Bangalore KHIR is coming up in north of Devanahalli
Very good points, especially point #1.
While educational system is against any change students have to either wait for a generation for system to change or take their own education in their own hands.
Let all residents of karnataka work for the greatness of karnataka in whichever way they can
Sir big salute and respect to your explanation. Specially with the pace you did. Despite having such think tanks, if government is unable to deliver, it's visible that they lack discipline and consistency. They have all the resources. And I feel their response to your question of why North KA has not developed is very lazy response.
I have faith in Karnataka which is rich in everything be it industry, agri, services sector, it's rich culture etc would certainly become a trillion $ economy soon.
Agricultural production can be optimised by priduction of electric current for the same.
Let me pray God to ensure Karnataka gets one trillion economy surpassing other states. Good luck.
Build the foundation for future generations
Bangalore can be dream city in future as well with planning and development and change in. Infrastructure.
One issue that the speakers should talk about is the prevalence and acceptance of brazen , transactional corruption by politicos, bureacracy by one and all. The free for all political thuggery that has literally destroyed Bengaluru as an aesthetic and cultured place should he brought out. They also should talk more about the productivity of labor ( sans the knowledge economy ) in Karnataka. There is not enough comparative data study on this.
Sir, what about the educational institutions in karnataka? Has there been any survey on post implementation of NEP?
Very positive
All great points. One thing that I would like to see is supporting agriculture sector with higher end smart technologies, research, scientific methods of farming to improve productivity etc. I believe in China the great exodus from rural areas to industrial hubs created a huge social imbalance, affected family life and social fabric. Many families were separated and the main bread winner wouldn't see his family and kids and ageing parents even once in a year. Very sad state of affairs.
One big thing that is severely lacking in the western model of development and growth is the focus on well being of a family that is so critical for social fabric and a key factor in Gross Happiness Product. Western society is too individualistic and materialistic, must say very short sighted in that aspect. The ground reality is, lot of people in the Western and other developed economies are not happy despite their economic status and affordability because they are devoid of love, affection and the security offered by a family. There are some things that money can not buy.
Our Indian system has long emphasised the value and importance of well being of a family as a basic building unit of our social fabric. Therefore supporting the agricultural sector and improving their quality of life wherever they are is also a key consideration in the Karnataka Growth Model.
Carrot and stick policy and change in mindset will help
Sir,
I'm from Mangalore, a city with parallel to another port city Mumbai.
Mumbai /Maharashtra is well on course to become 1 trillion dollar economy
For karnataka to do so its fringe cities Mangalore, Belgaum ,hubli dharwad belt must contribute significantly.
I'm appalled to find Mangalore couldn't hit the pace it should have been despite being a port city.
Govt, must scale up infrastructure of all karnataka cities..
Problem is western Ghats
Mundra Port choosen on west cost!
Our politicians should put bangalore in complete auto mode, and move out of Bangalore, may be make Davengere the Capital. It is equidistant from every corner of Karnataka. Focus should be on the following:-
1. Focused Development of Mysore/Mangalore/Belgaum/Hubli into new areas of commerce.
2. Focus on achieving near 100% education and skill development including rural areas.
3. Uniform Health and nutrition benifits in every corner of the state.
4. Better water management considering we have 18 river systems in the state and yet find dry seasons.
5. Focus on increasing revenue in Farming as majority state employment is in farming.
6. Industrial zones in Hubli/Belgaum connected to ports in coastal area with better infrastructure
AI can help farmers as well to optimise agriculture production.
AI apps with laptops for students can change the way education is for government school and college students.
Asian Tiger's economies suddenly plateaued.
Why?
Naturally?
How do we avoid the same?
We need every state working hard to turbocharge their economy.
awesome ... hope they develop Tumkur, Kalaburagi, Hubli and Mangalore as well into IT and manufacturing hubs. Need improve connections and metro rail to Hosur as well to improve trade with Tamil Nadu
I think Mumbai and Hyderabad cities are doing gr8 for urban development as on tdy..both states political leaders clear on reality.. especially Telugu states always focus on development, and even politicians are very much aware of development policies..I noticed from last 20 years..which is not the same case in many states ..
The curruption is because of not feeling to be a part of a large family we are.
Kannadigas MUST first throw out all the corrupt politicians immediately. Be it BJP or any other party, bjp doesn't seem to be even trying to root out corruption, time for common people to rise not AAP pls 🙏
Satyendra Jain is having good time jail and Aravind Kejriwal is the greatest Kattar Imandar
200 Metros in census town...Bravo
Is raw silk exported or silk products are exported and sold.
Maharashtra, Tamil nadu, UP, Karnataka and Gujarat have the potential to reach $1 trn in 6-7 years...Speed up admins!
Any major goals to be achieved in north karnataka.
Telangana gov investing lot in Hyderabad urban development.. I hope all other cities also do better, especially Bangalore and chennai
Solve continuous Political instability and Bangalore's infrastructure woes.
If you just focus on Tourism, that alone would get more numbers given Karanataka has more tourist places ( one State many worlds ) than many of actual tourist states.
Maharashtra has crossed the Halfway of a Trillion $ this Year !
The karanataka board for education and schooling has not produced a desired result. The government collges abd school are in a pathetic situations.
Bangalore road infrastructure at its best.😂
Its not road map..call it as pothole map
Very soon Karnataka 1 trillion GDP
Sure Karnatak will become 50% govt from 40%
has this been discussed with key stake holders and their views and participation ensured
Brilliant Conversation!! Well am stating my opinion and that its a factual truth if this offends anyone, am helpless!!
South indian states are the engine of prosperity for india along with maharastra and others but not North HIndi BIMARU or cow belt states are a hinderence from long time for indias growth, unless these states improve india cant reach the 5 trillion or 10 trillion GDP is a fat chance. Why are there no IT and industrial circuits in north india? what happening to all the big chunk taxes that are subsidized by southern states?? its like throwing mony down the well. The root cause is communal politics and corrupt politians and these people of cow belt who are still in medeival castist mindset who elect them, bastars dont do development and bult cities , IT and industrial circuites in their state and hence unpresidented migration, peanalization of southern states, burden, ethno linguistic conflicts to southern cities and off course bonus hindi imposition and cultural invasion. Unless these cow belt states controll population and develop by throwing fascist communal, corrupt politicians, india economical superpoer and developed country goal is a long shot .
A prosperous karanataka a need for 5 trillion dollar economy gor India.
stop focusing only on Bangalore..develop 3-4 cities other than capital city in each state..this will help decongest the cities and will also help growth..focus more on Mysore, Mangalore, Dharwad, Bellary etc
I am malayali. And there are many malayalis in Bengaluru settled there. Even I am goin to banglore for a job. No job in Kerala
Fight against muslims & communists in kerala...don't run away...ask your people who run away from kerala to back
Better merge Kerala with Karnataka.
Mohandas pai Sir you should please join politics 🙏
Delhi Gujarat Mumbai get huge national bank loans . Multiple billions of loans.
Is it possible to increase farmer income instead of taking the traditional view that they need to move into manufacturing? Multi modal logistics would help in exporting agro products. Are investments planned to be done in these sectors?
There is a reason there are no agricultural superpowers in this world anymore(Argentina ranking above US was the last instance). Manufacturing instills a scientific tooling in people that seeps into all sectors. It's one thing if an experienced engineer steps into the agricultural sector like it has happened in the EU and US.
100 kg of wheat.
1 good quality mid range car.
Which will create more job and bring more value?
NO.
It's simple.. to increase the money of farmers we need to reduce the number of farmers and bring in technology to reduce human labour.
What a troll he is? His hatred for TN is gleaming ..this guy is behaving like 2 rs troll instead of padma shri awardee
I like the point on knowledge economy. @8.0 min, Sir in that case do you think UP will be able to achieve $1 T economy, as their Edu base is also very low.
First give good roads, worst government departments corrupted to the core.
40% govt
@16.40 min, based on above data it is now easy to understand when Raghurajan said that we should focus on service sector only.
But again his views were purely on earning perspective and did not account for Security - Geography and Economic, so it was useless advice.
Can we just compare cities like Guiyang and Chongqing and compare them with our Karnataka cities
Isn’t it logical?
KA have the lowest GER among south and they lack manufacturing jobs..it indicates that a lot of people are still getting lower wages.
True that KA’s GST collection is around 10k crores. How could people with low wages pay more tax. Only people in Bangalore could spend more and Bangalore has quite a lot of white collar migrants
The disparity is huge in KA.
Rather than creating hijab issue and trouble fellow Muslim citizens of this great nation, please invest in human capital and create multiple cities
Thank God BJP gone
Any goal for imporving silk quality priduced in karanataka to over take China.
Toyota maybe soon Shifting to Maharashtra!
Empty vessels make more noise.
🙏🥰🙏
You should be cm to happen this all
there is no fee for dreaming.
Wada acchhe se banana seeko pehle
😂😂😂
This is all very well but we Kannadigas have to be given all opportunities to progress also and not be sidelined and driven out of our own land as is happening currently...
Very good analysis. But how cities will become educational hubs if you are appointing based on caste and other considerations? Just like North India is enjoying the revenues of 4 states, Kalyan Karnataka and Mumbai Karnataka siphoning out resources without much contribution to GSDP.
Apponting VCs
I heard the full interview. Mr. Mohandas repeated labour intensive four or five times. Graduates do not want blue collar jobs its diffcult. Sir mentioned twice or thrice that the GER in TN is 52%. Sir but they are not employable. Thats where the education system must change. For the NEP to show resultsit will take a decade and it may be changed if the govt changes.
Sir tells the culture and polticians are paraochial. The poltiticians may be but not the Tamilians. I beg to differ. You are a towering personality may i request you to influence on the IIMs to upload the latest lectures or guest lectures . Their podcasts are very old not relevant . ( This is beyond tjis interview but you can do it sir).
Finally please play the devils advocate and be aplotical at least in debates of national importance.
Which states employees are come out with appropriate skills?
Skill gap is our national problem, we have only GER at higher education to calculate employability as they can develop skill while/before get posted
👍
This guy talks all nonsense, true BJP mouthpiece
One recession; like the one we saw in 2003, the service industry is gone; Bangalore is gone; and your dream of 1 trillion economy is also gone. Do you guys even know how the trillion economy would look like? In how many sectors do you guys lead in top 5? What is your urbanization level today? If all is well for the next 10 years, you may have a shot at trillion dollars economy; but does that how economy works? Mr. Pai should stop kidding himself.
The pandemic was as bad as a recession and we have recovered well and thriving now. I agree that building a $1T economy is not easy but stop targeting Bangalore in your comments. Be broad-minded, we are all Indians first!
p͎r͎o͎m͎o͎s͎m͎ 😥
Our CM KCR has given advice to central government to invest more in these metro cities give these cities seperate budget for these cities to grow more but nothing 🤔🤔🤔🤔 upto now modi please listen to opposition also
Why should center give seperate funds for metro?
State should do dt on their own.
States have funds to give free electricity, 10s of nonsensical freebies and subsidies but when it comes to capex, Center should help.
Waah!!
If he can't manage the already big enough allocation then he shouldn't be the cm . Center should only invest in places in states where it can generate more revenue for the states and jobs .. while metro sounds good it's not worth giving extra extra cash for... While some manufacturing cluster or something like that .. would do better .. he wants money for vanity projects where he can plaster his face ? He'll have to take loans for that and find ways to make sure telangana isn't going to die under the already extremely high debt it has .
No need. Hyderabad contributes to 1/4 of the population and we dont even have 40 seats in assembly.
How much of taxes money from Hyderabad is being spent on Hyderabad?
States should stop freebies, Funding Madrasas with Thousands of Crores
Instead use them for Metro cities
Tamil Nadu experts are poverty economists who increase poverty and Modi has solved roti kapda makaan and toilets for India. This is Pai's thinking
He's not wrong tho , I genuinely thought TN was going to be best .. but it's sadly a slow down hill .. the current tn politicians are ruining the old decades of hard work
@@bababistril TN had to do something to not be shit . Agricultural land is like very little but there was enough opportunity for manufacturing especially in the semi arid southern tn and in swampy northern tn . in Karnataka , Bengaluru is the only place . In TN there is chennai , Hosur (outskirts of bangalore pretty much) , Coimbatore and Madurai to tirunulveli . even with the efforts of DMK and conversion mafia , the state's four corners are pretty well off . TN industries' have to pay bribes to TN govt but that has been more of a positive for TN .
Tamil nadu projected 2022-23 gsdp is 340 billion usd. Karnataka projected 2022-33 is 310 billion. Post covid TN grew fast.
With good rains , this year TN will add atleast another 5 billion usd$ more to its economy
Sanghis always wish Tamil Nadu bad. Such is their patriotism.

Mr Pai how much of Bangalore's IT kids are actually from Karnataka ? you sure know this ... Bangalore has one thing going for it ... its climate and nothing else ... Start speaking the truth not what suits your agenda

14:52 - Is a lie. 35% of Bangalore doesn't have portable drinking water and rely on borewell. Highly corrupt Govt. Takes 1.5 lakhs bribe for plan approval for building any house in BBMP. (on receipt its only 8-10K). Add to that Karnataka lost 25000 crores to fund North Indian States (lopsided GST). Karnataka would have done better if it were to come out of India and be a separate nation.
To The above comment , I have the below answer :
Firstly I am informing that I am a Bengali , Bengal was the capital of the eastern world only till It was chosen as the economic and knowledge driven economy was a huge part of it , after the railway logistics equalization policy it was practically destroyed as a direct result of the destruction of incentives of living in KOLKATA
Secondly , I strongly believe If Karnataka if separated from India would amount to the figurative equivalent of cutting of one's own leg to cripple it , Don't think only Kannadigas are responsible for Bangalore and rise of Karnataka , people from all over India are responsible , be it in the form of high level employees, leaders , founders , funders , There 12-13 lakh Bengalis in Karnataka alone , Karnataka cannot afford to cut itself off from India , please don't jump to conclusions and i recommend not thinking yourselves as superior in anyway , also known as the New Money High , this can prove to be the Dunning Kruger effect .
Calcutta and Bengal was destroyed by Jyoti Basu and now Mamata Banerjee. You guys need to choose your leaders more carefully. Bangalore and Karnataka have created a favorable ecosystem and given opportunities to people from all over India to come here and prosper in the services and knowledge domains. Mumbai has done the same in the financial sector. Be thankful instead of being resentful, we are all Indians first!

Mohandas Pai is a hardcore Sangi who is supporting this Crime Minister..waste fellow...
He may be a supporter of BJP but he is also a patriot.
Poverty alleviationis more important than making rich people richer. Mohandas Pai is talking nonsense
