Stupendous! I'm absolutely in love with the rally cars of that era, heavily locked diffs, power coming in barely controlllable bursts, the sounds, the drivers, the rally formats... Everything. Thanks so much for uploading this!
It is somehow hard to respect the current rally drivers as much as Juha here, because back then the drivers really had to work for the money - stick shift, less computers etc...
We all like to think that we can drive like this but no way,Ive been driving allsorts since the age of ten on farms and am 46 now and theres no way i could match a quater of this guys performance. Modern cars are quicker but it took far more car control to keep these things pointing in the right direction. Excellent drive.
I have managed to keep the car under control under seemingly uncertain conditions, but yes, my car does have some sort of driving assistance. I agree with you.
Brian's guitar 自high系列 Richard Burns have similar simplistic pacenotes and I couldn’t understand it either. I think nowadays no one really uses descriptive terms to describe a corner anymore and most of the drivers use number systems now.
Phantom5611 Personally, "4-right-long, then 3-right-small jump," sounds so much easier to understand than this gibberish. I know I sound stupid, but that's too vague unless I know the car like the back of my hand and I've gone through the stage a few times instead of just once. Another problem I have is when the co-pilot reads the pace notes three lines ahead of where they're at on the stage. "Dude, I'm trying to drive a tiny hatchback down a mountain road at around 60-80 MPH while dodging rocks, trees, officials and, god forbid, crashed or stalled cars. I can only allocate so much memory to, well, memory right now, so please, for the love of all that is sacred and Holy, slow down and go one line at a time."
TH-cam also compresses the hell out of anything you upload, and then converts it to w/e format they use. If it isn't basically untouched from its source before uploading it ends up looking like shit. I have a dvd of the 1983 Manx Rally - Isle of Man in car footage with Ari Vatanen and Terry Harryman, and the video quality is pretty damned good. That being said, a clip like this with less than perfect quality is still infinitely more entertaining than WRC is today.
do you have or know of a vid of Malcolm Wilson between 1989 & 1997 being held up by a marshal on one of the Welsh stages. I think he was held mid stage due to confusion
reav3rtm No shit. Dude, he hasn't even reached the first turn from your last string of notes. I think he misunderstood what being a few steps ahead meant.
Notice that Juha Kankkunen is soooo finnish and Nick englishman so it´s not maybe the best combination to drive maximun speed but still they made it damn fast and won many races.
@karokaro1974 No, sorry. You could say that to many videos of big drivers, but here, it abolutely looks the way it is...freaked out genius driving no one else could :D
If I had to drive there in that speed there would be a constant stream of piss flowing in my trousers and the car would be wrapped around a tree after a few corners.
Okay, Nick is welshman but I guess Juha doesn't understand a word of welsh so that only common language is english, right? And that is so minimum vocabulary than ever because there´s no time on that top speed to faults or misconceptions.
This is a video of a legendary driver going for his second victory in the RAC rally. If you know how to drive faster, then go become a rally driver. You will get an eight-digit income (USD) and travel around the world.
I was at this rally and you could hardly stand up walking down the stages because it was so icy, juha came past us like he was on dry tarmac. amazing
Real man+real car= REAL RALLYING!!
Kankkunen was probably the best ever. This is just sick.
top 6 with makinen,colin, gronholm,vatanen and rohrl
Best driver ever. The section at 3.09 where he throws it right, snatches another gear then throws it left and holds the slide is epic.
Scandinavian flick
He was born to do this, amazing!

glory days
It was this guy who gave me the idea to buy a Toyota Celica. Possibly the smartest purchase I've made.
i think the same for my 92 civic sedan 5th gen ,still driving that car :)
f*cking hard stage.
with H gearbox.
thumbs up
+ icy road here and there

Me to, i can throw a car around, but these guys would makes us look silly.
Just amazed of Juha´s driving skills o
I agree. rwd. Stick sifter, slippery road etc. He literally got his hands full. Respect.
@@sdry its a 4wd but so slippy it looks like a rwd..
(Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD (ST185) - engine 3S-GTE)
The driver,co-driver & the car, all are a combination of legends
"Sorry mate" lol. Nice recovery. Great run!
Whe have to respect the co-drivers too. They have to read exactly in time and if they fail, that would be the end.
The King of rallying.
He gets the simplest pacenote I've ever listened to...

@@yaboileeroy3038 You can't check the road ahead. Even so, if you guys works as a clock you can be as fast as heck.
1:40 straight road performance ... scary !
Street was completely icy
Did any one else see the massive rock he avoids at about 4.04 on the inside of the corner ? Amazing driving .
easy ri- AND STONE INSIDE
Well, Juha Kankkunen has been my great hero since i was born. just fucking amazing! him and Ari Vatanen!
So smooth and fast, that's the Juha's style.
Thanks uploading this!
Nicky Grist...
How did you do it?
Being co-driver of Juha Kankunnen?...
What a courage!,,,
Kankkunen, maybe the best ever.
@MrBanaanipommi It's Nicky Grist mate, a local boy to me. Sat with some off the scale drivers of course :)
Immenso Juha (and Nicky)....
amazing , RESPECT !!!
Kimi would have no chance against Kankkunen. Hope they compete in next year Finnish rally like they promised.
OMGGG THE FUCKING BOSS!!!!

For that time, FLV
Exceptionally hard stage!
TOYOTA CELICA ST185: very great car!
The good old times. That time it was real rally.
It's still badass check it out!
That was quite interesting to watch and really quite awesome. I would love to get a chance to do that.
amazing
1.41 ->2.05...DAMN what a speed!!
Awesome!👍
one man from my family, said that im some "family" to this man! yeah!!
now thats what you call a pro .. !!!
awesome
CRAZY GOOD
Man,some pilot
How to rock a car for a few kilometers! Yuha driving skills!
Grist's pace notes nomenclature was pretty simple when he was under McRae, but it used to be even more simplified under Kankkunen, I quite like it.
Driver makes the notes👍
cool video
Talk about white-knuckle driving! Definitely need a beer after this one...
wow
Who are the 2 shit drivers who disliked this video? Juha is absolutely amazing in this video. Thanks for the upload!
do you have or know of a vid of Malcolm Wilson between 1989 & 1997 being held up by a marshal on one of the Welsh stages. I think he was held mid stage due to confusion
Its impossible for me to follow those co-driver's notes given so far upfont while watching this video.
reav3rtm No shit. Dude, he hasn't even reached the first turn from your last string of notes. I think he misunderstood what being a few steps ahead meant.
I missed almost half of what the co-driver said while watching this. I would crash so many times....
Prickly Pear I couldn't even focus on the driving because of the co-driver.
If I was driving:
"Sorry what was that last one again...ah shit we've crashed into a tree."
whoooooooooo!
yeehaa kankinen
the only thing I can fault you for is not taking us to the very end.
Like driving a bookshelf...
Notice that Juha Kankkunen is soooo finnish and Nick englishman so it´s not maybe the best combination to drive maximun speed but still they made it damn fast and won many races.
and i live rear to juha... :D
Regular gearshifter as well.
i don´t imagine Kimi Raikonen with this cars...
i agree that the co-drive is nicky grist
Como le pisa el animal!
@karokaro1974 No, sorry. You could say that to many videos of big drivers, but here, it abolutely looks the way it is...freaked out genius driving no one else could :D
how the heck do they stay on the road
@037racing aijaa. :D vai kuka se sitte oli... ?
Would like to see that combination compete our youngsters of nowaday.....With combination I mean; car, Nicky and driver.
3'07 dat hand work 0.0
@MrBanaanipommi Kartturi on tässä videossa Nicky Grist!
@garthrallysport
Loeb and Ogier......
keep the gas pedal down, occasionally loosening a bit and just steer and that's it!.... :)
@MrBanaanipommi Juha Kankkusen kartturi 1993-96
1:40 hesus christ...
@MrBanaanipommi miks se sitten muka puhuisi enkuksi?
slowhand clapton ???????
Is he joking? That´s crazy. Drive it like you stole it!
holy cow 1:40 onwards is mad
ups. near, not rear. :DD
The card reader is shitting in his pants :D LOL :D
If I had to drive there in that speed there would be a constant stream of piss flowing in my trousers and the car would be wrapped around a tree after a few corners.
Fuck it much be hard to read the directions going at that speed :P
en muista tarkkaan mutta se oli jotenki nii, että se oli tottunu enkun kieliseen...
CO-driver is Finnish... :D
MrBanaanipommi You mean Welsh? This was when Juha was partnered with Nicky Grist, who later co-drove for Colin McRae.
Better quality DVD rip I uploaded th-cam.com/video/2NDKXuQL-VY/w-d-xo.html
wat
Okay, Nick is welshman but I guess Juha doesn't understand a word of welsh so that only common language is english, right? And that is so minimum vocabulary than ever because there´s no time on that top speed to faults or misconceptions.
I could probably take a couple of seconds off that time
KKK
you should really shift sooner in snowy conditions, it provides more grip and less spinout, of course on the straight its always flat out though
Juha Kankunnen will know this better than you do....
This is a video of a legendary driver going for his second victory in the RAC rally. If you know how to drive faster, then go become a rally driver. You will get an eight-digit income (USD) and travel around the world.
Chev Chelios informing 4 time World Rally Champion Juha Kankkunen from Finland how to drive in snowy conditions!
Could start with Juha's driving academy 😉😉😉
