Improvising over 2 chords per bar - build jazz phrases that sound great from simple chord notes

  • Here's a method I use to train my students to improvise over areas where there are 2 chords in a bar. These areas can feel too fast for newer improvisers to play over, but it isn't that difficult if you practice this way.
It involves using chord notes but you can do a lot more with them than you might think. In addition, you'll discover that you're learning your inversions at the same time!

Aye just want you to know that your videos have helped me more than any other videos I’ve seen on TH-cam, I love your jazz spirit and approach at teaching it; it really helped me understand and helped me into my improv which is what I could say is one of the hardest things to do, thanks a lot mate and cheers to your skills and knowledge 🙏

Great Video. I have been playing for a while. I really want to focus on chord tone playing. I’m guilty of just wanting to play all the cool sh$t 😀

Learning so much here! Thanks Shan. I take it that you could use these principles on the first 8 bars of Satin Doll, right? Except those are major II V Is

Absolutely Julian! They could also be useful over that trickier area - Am7 D7 | A♭m7 D♭7. Glad you're learning a lot Julian and thanks for being here 🙂
