- Sahir Ludhiyanvi Sahab’s “Pyar par bas to nahin hai” is a lyrical masterpiece from the film “Sone ki chidiya”. However the film version has only 2 verses.

दरअसल ये गीत बनने का श्रेय साहिर और नय्यर जितना ही फिल्म की निर्माती इस्मत चुगताई को भी जाता है. तल्खियां में की दो अलग-अलग नज्म मिलाकर एक गीत बनानेकी कल्पना उन्ही की थी. कई सालों बाद जब साहिर को पूछा गया था कि उनकी शायरी को सही मायने में समझकर उसे सबसे बेहतरीन धुन में पिरोने वाला संगीतकार कौन है, तो बिना झिझक के उन्होंने नय्यर का नाम लिया था!
इतनी सुंदर गज़ल इतने प्यार से और नियंत्रित मध्यम स्वर में प्रस्तुत की गई है.. समग्र प्रभाव मंत्रमुग्ध कर देने वाला है, कम से कम कहने के लिए जादुई है! असली रत्न !

Bahut khoob- Bahut khoob ! Sagar Sawarkar for your beautiful rendition of Sahir sahibs immortal ghazals.No doubt Talat coloured this ghazal in a beautiful emotional hue. After pointer from @Sagar Sawarkar, I looked up the full nazm at Rekhta. Indeed it is credited to Sahir. Thank you for the pointer. But a closer look at makta-e-ghair words and lyrics of the song in Sone Ki Chidiya, I have concluded that the song is not a true subset of the nazm. The nazm is what it is. The song appears to be inspired from the nazm in the sense that it reuses some of the lines from the nazm with slight modifications, and adds a full new stanza to the song, not in nazm. That stanza added to film version of song is
कहीं ऐसा न हो पाओं मेरे थर्रा जाएं
और तेरी मरमरी बाहों का सहारा न मिले
अश्क बहते रहे खमोश सियाह रातों में
और तेरे रेशमी आंचल का किनारा न मिले
प्यार पर बस तो नहीं है ...
In terms of tenor, the film song is romantic and not sad or expression of a broken heart. The nazm, on the other hand, has a tinge of sad undercurrent to it. So, it can be argued that song was written for the film, and it used some of the lines from nazm, but it’s a different song.
