Hi Laura, two things. 1) Have you thought about relocating your washer/dryer to the bathroom that you’re currently remodeling? That would make it more convenient to your bedrooms. 2) would eliminating 1 of the doors off the multi purpose room cause any issues for getting larger equipment through to your garden in the future? Overall I’m so in awe with everything you’ve accomplished in your beautiful house.
We had ours upstairs in our last home, and have now bought a property similar to Laura’s. I’m desperately waiting to bring it upstairs where you say, as that’s what we have planned. It makes so much sense.
Hi Laura, I love all the updates and following along on the renovation and parenting journey! As someone who works in childcare, It breaks our heart when a baby has their first day in childcare and won’t have a single bit of food because they have only ever breast fed and comfort fed. It leads to crying all day with no sleep or food and not a whole lot a new person to them can do but hold and comfort them. Teaching him this before he’s in another persons care changes the child’s developmental relationship with “strangers” for the better! I know it’s tough but you are helping him so much in the long run, you are doing awesome and adding more tools to your parenting tool belt!
Thanks for posting this! I actually have a little 7 months old who will be going to part time care in a few months. I don't suppose you have any tips do you 😅 or maybe your 'top 3 things' you wish parents did that make your job and the transition easier? X
Hi Laura. I burst into tears at the start as my baby also woke every 3 to 4 hours for the first year. I’ll never forget the sleep deprivation mixed with pure joy every day. You’re amazing with what you get done around that.
Yes to flipping the kitchen over on the other side, so much more functional! Also, I'd suggest (when the time comes) to opt for a round dining table, it would flow so much better, especially if you're planning on putting two sofas in front of each other. It's going to help break all of the lines from front to back of the house, which is usually the feeling in these types of extensions
Thank you so much for being open about parenthood struggles Laura - we have a 7 month old who also is very up and down with sleep and having a bit of solidarity really helps! People can make it all seem perfect on TH-cam so thank you for your honesty
I enjoyed the parenting update! Glad he's doing well soothing himself to sleep now and getting those longer stretches in. I'm sure that feels SO NICE haha. 🥰🥰
Love your ideas for the kitchen. Where you said you would flip the cabinets to the other side and have a countertop instead, consider recycling bin cupboards underneath. Its the one thing i wish I'd considered wih my kitchen.
When I saw your Neptune brochure for the kitchen I thought blimey that’s almost the budget for the renovation! But it’s great you can visualise what is possible in the space. Very exciting 😊
Regarding the C word, I've already gone back and watched your Christmas content from past years when I haven't been feeling well. I find them comforting so i'm so excited for all the new Christmas content this year. The one month count down begins!
Having had an Ikea / Wren and DIY KITCHENS kitchen the best we had was DIY KITCHENS as we had the most freedom designing exactly what we wanted and was cheapest
I just remodeled my kitchen and I have a few concerns you might want to address with the layout. I don’t think you have enough counter space on each side f your sink. Also I don’t think when you get things out of your refrigerator that you turn around and have the island directly behind you to put things on. Had you considered making the island run the other way and having more counter space to use as you turn around when accessing all that perimeter storage. I love love my microwave drawer in my island. If your island ran the other way you could make it 48 wide and have a prep sink on the end where the cooker is located. Your table could be round if the island running the same way made everything too linear. Also with all your perimeter cabinets going to the floor there’s no room for under cabinet lighting. Hopefully you’re doing recessed lights everywhere. You will have lots of shadows.
Kitchen is lovely … I would make one suggestion… put your sink where the cooker is … that way a window could be over your sink with views outside. I personally do not like being at the sink and staring at a wall !! I spend much more time prepping and cleaning up, at the sink!! Just a thought. Best of luck with the wonderful changes to come!!
You look so excited! But obviously lot’s happening. Glad you are getting more sleep. I found sleep deprivation the hardest thing, but luckily for us it didn’t last too long. Looks like your Christmas is going to do much fun!
I like the location of the cooker and flipping the sink/storage area to the other side could also work. The only thing I’d wonder with making those double doors a single door is whether that would reduce the natural light you’ll be able to get into your present dining room? It’ll already be secondary light through the kitchen into your snug, I’d try to keep that opening as bright and light as possible so the snug doesn’t become too dingy. Looking at your plans, I don’t think the circulation would be necessarily too tight or too much a thoroughfare if you kept the sink where it currently is planned. Loving seeing your progress and I know you’ll arrive at a great solution that’ll work for you, though I must confess that at present the proposed footprint of your extension looks rather big and boxy to me. Loved earlier designs where you had a dining nook with bench seating and retained a courtyard, even though I can see the appeal of just going as big as you can. I suppose it’ll depend on the detailing of the extension to make it not look like an enormous bland box stuck onto the back of your house. No matter how nice the kitchen and taps, if the scale and natural light is off, it’ll always feel dysfunctional. Pay close attention to the ceiling‘ height and gradient of the extension, especially underneath your existing first floor back extension! If it’s a flat low-ish ceiling throughout as shown in your Neptune rendering (even with a few clever skylights) it’ll feel very oppressive. Remember, height of a room has to be in proportion to footprint! If the room is big but has proportionately low ceilings, it’ll just feel dingy. I’d suggest you look at Georgian architecture for inspiration re rules of proportion in architecture. Just a little tip from an architectural historian and conservation consultant who spends too much time rectifying bad boxy modern extensions on lovely Victorian and Edwardian houses like yours 😅
I think doing it yourselves is a really good idea! You are such perfectionists and have such attention to detail it will be much better! I like the cooker in the chimney breast and agree with having the cabinets/ pantry /kitchen sink under the window with a run of base cabinets and shelves on the other side. It will flow nicely as long as you remember your kitchen triangle.
Great vlog today. Chuckling at christmas gifts already. We never were into over indulging at christmas, Santa only brought gifts that fit into stockings (way too many for Santa around the world). And we encouraged making meaningful gifts for family. Love two dishwashers. Now that I'm a single, I've put in dishwasher drawers. First, the top drawer is used most often for just daily dishes and run when full. Nice having a place to store dirty dishes, rather than the sink. The bottom is used for pots and cooker covers and bits/bobs that come with company. Using less water and kitchen stays tidy. Just a suggestion.. How many times do we say, "can't run a load.. not full enough"?
I love the kitchen presentation. I have a Neptune kitchen and love it. I feel it would be nice to keep it as she has designed it as it makes a fabulous focal point as you walk in the room. So welcoming. You won’t just be walking into the side of a run of cabinets. Excited to see how it all progresses 😍
My sister said to her husband "I've decided what to paint the bedroom - guess what it is!!" And her husband said, "Its a green, but not a shade we already have, something completely different!" My Mother also had a thing for green - it does match in so well with the greenery outside. And I have a perfect soft apple green in my kitchen. 😄
Hi Laura, love your designs for the bathroom and the kitchen. Another endorsement from me for DIY kitchens. Our kitchen fitter said the quality was the best he’d worked with. I really appreciated the home design platform as I could spend a year tweaking the layout as the extension build progressed. I was able to change things right up to the day I confirmed the order. With your skills you will do an amazing job. We love our finished kitchen. Can’t wait to see all your amazing new work.
I like the green you have going on...the pink fleshy colours are unappealing if I'm honest. You always make everything beautiful so it will be cozy and inviting no matter what you do with your home. Have fun!
I would leave the design as is and not change it, except for the pendant lights so many people have those it's a bit boring and they are hard to clean. I would not move the laundry facilities as your bath is quite smaller than people realize. It makes more sense to keep on the main floor in case you want to apply a clothing line to dry linens outside. The colour you have for the bath are interesting sure it will be a nice family bathroom :) Maybe once you transition off breast feeding maybe using chamomile at night will help Teddy sleep thus having you have proper sleep maybe afternoon naps might help.
I enjoyed hearing about your plans for your kitchen. I look forward to seeing the bathroom etc. Great idea to create extra/strong storage space above the bedroom. I'm not sure about the green mirror. I think I would have gone for something more neutral that will last longer. Does that green go with the Sanderson fabric? ( BTW If you could see my house you wouldn't take my advice).I am old enough to be a Grandmother and listening to you talk about feeding and sleepless nights brings back such vivid memories. It all feels just like yesterday. Loved your stripey top. All the best :-)
So good to see you ...and yes you're definitely being kept busy...with all Teddy and your renovations....all sounds amazingly stunning...I would definitely have the other side of the kitchen. Where are all units... It makes it free flowing from entering from the hallway...and more open ...lower cabinets...shelves above..the upstairs is going to be super too...the time is definitely racing by.... And before you know it ...work will be starting... How very exciting...well done with all... Looking forward to seeing you soon and new adventures or plans in the making..😊
I absolutely love the kitchen design but I would worry about crossing a door way with boiling pasta etc to drain in the sink - I just imagine charging children/dogs and accidents! I wouldn’t normally comment but my friend burnt their dog and it terrifies me now
I think the idea of putting the sink etc on the other wall is a good one, you don’t want your high traffic area in and out of the room in the same space as your sink etc, two busy areas in the same space isn’t great. Imagine having the dishwasher open with kids or guests coming in and out….
I really love the Neptune design and layout. One thing which a lot of people overlook when choosing to put a sink on the island, you’ll often have bits of washing up on a draining board, which isn’t pretty! An island is a feature, somewhere to have a beautiful vase of flowers for example, you don’t want to place that next to a pile of drying pots and pans. We have our main sink on a side run of cabinets under the window, but an additional smaller prep sink on the island, which we use for draining pasta or rice etc. It’s really convenient and doesn’t distract from a beautiful focal point of room.
Laura, they're talking the "s" word here overnight. Even so, I had to think for a minute what the "c" word was. I love what you've picked for the bathroom. I voted for pink when you had the two options, so I'm glad to see some of it get chosen. 😊
I’ve had my painted kitchen from DIY kitchens over six years now and I am very pleased with it. My two daughters and sister in law also have kitchens from DIY. My partner installed them all. You should definitely check them out.
You have a lovely big space for your ktichen. Have you thought about storage for electrical items; breadmaker; airfryer etc? If I had the space I certainly would have them in a dedicated cupboard, out of sight when not in use!
Hi Laura! Have you considered including a mud room area on the wall across from the work triangle by the glass door? Also, have you considered placing the run of storage closer to the other glass door and putting the sink on the island? Then, you could create a more defined sitting and play area at the end of the room.

Hi Laura just a thought if you did want a centrally located kitchen dining on one side lounge on the other the fireplace could be fitted out into storage cupboard space for formal tableware dishes and glasses and or linens even wine? That way when cooking etc you can have a more outward viewpoint rather than cutting the space across the space it would allow for kitchen along one wall of choosing central island with cooking or sink and stools along the other side this keeps the traffic area to maximum which will make a difference and perhaps that balance of one door either side more visually balanced and neater looking. Love the colours and mirror looking forward to Christmas content whatever comes our way. 😎
Handmade kitchens of Christchurch !!! Have a Google! Our dream was Neptune too but these guys got us an similar look for a fraction of the price ! They’re in frame and paintable . You design yourself which is where the massive cost is saved .

I went through the same thing with my daughter, but not without guilt until our Scottish infant welfare nurse said: 'Don't worry, she's fine. We worry about bottle or breast feeding and then before you know it, they're off living with some fella.....'.

Uh oh - if that's the Mandarin Stone Di Scacchi tumbled marbled tile then it's my fault it's out of stock. I bought so much for my kitchen and then went back to look the next day as I was worried I needed more and it's gone. Sorry! 😄
Oh it’s looking good… I think the cooker area looks really nice… maybe having an area for Teddy to play? A little play kitchen etc… That would look nice near the double doors/single door? I think having the cooker area behind the island is a good idea… Keeping the children away from the hot area….
I dropped one feed a day and transferred to bottle, kept the last breastfeed at night for a while because it was special and then he dropped it himself. Just painted my daughters walls in Lick : Pink#2 an adorable colour
Being able to glance at kids shouldn’t be underestimated. Maybe the fridge and the full hight units where the cooker is positioned on the design? The there won’t be any blocks in the main bit of the kitchen
Completely agree - it would be better the have the cooker/sink/ fridge working triangle more central to the design. Also the sink much closer to the cooker. You don’t want to be carrying hot pans to the sink with little ones running around under your feet!
Do two full dishwashers instead. I mean if you're going bougie you might as well do it properly, and it will be symmetrical. The smaller dishwasher just looks a bit odd. I'd place the sink closer to the island, so you don't have to walk around and behind the island to get to it. That would get annoying fast. Maybe a pot filler would be nice too, not sure how common those are in the uk (they aren't in my country, but I like the idea of them). A build in food and water station for Otto would be cute! Some people to pot fillers for that, instead of for themselves haha.
I would absolutely put two dishwashers in! we have a large kitchen and a large family and entertain a lot, and whenever people are over, we have to do two dishwasher loads and its annoying only having one. Would also recommend not to have the sink in the island, it is too messy
Well good but your fridges are so far away from your cooker that would be too much waste energy keep walking here and there too many times to me . Maybe she doesn’t cook every day!
Hi Laura, two things. 1) Have you thought about relocating your washer/dryer to the bathroom that you’re currently remodeling? I like the Neptune cooker placement. Stops the sole extension from feeling like a kitchen. Better zoning.
Love all your plans. Sharing your Christmas items is fine with me 🎄
Hi Laura. I burst into tears at the start as my baby also woke every 3 to 4 hours for the first year. I’ll never forget the sleep deprivation mixed with pure joy every day. You’re amazing with what you get done around that.

The letting go is more about Mom than baby -- we all go through it! And if he's happy and healthy, you're doing everything right!
I enjoyed the parenting update! Glad he's doing well soothing himself to sleep now and getting those longer stretches in. I'm sure that feels SO NICE haha. 🥰🥰

I remember you renovating this bathroom and toilet! It seemed not that long ago, but you must feel that your life has changed tremendously!
Love the oven being at the end as a focal feature. You have now made me start thinking about the possibilities in my small space.😊

So agree!

Great kitchen design with the flip of the placement of the main row of cupboards to the other side. The cooker in the middle also looks lovely.

Love the cooker placement 🥰

Love super chatty videos. All the plans sound exciting and glad you found a worthy contractor.
Hi Laura! Have you considered including a mud room area on the wall across from the work triangle by the glass door? Also, have you considered placing the run of storage closer to the other glass door and putting the sink on the island? Then, you could create a more defined sitting and play area at the end of the room.
100% agree with the flipping of the cabinets and two dishwashers and making the single door on each side the symmetry and balance seems better with your changes
Also like the idea of 2 dishwashers, but that is likely due to my North American biases! You have a little one who will go through LOTS of dishes in a day. I don’t think you will regret it
I have setting plaster in my spare room. It's a gorgeous colour.
If your council is anything like ours you be lucky if you get planing permission in less than six months. Thy are under staffed 😊
Handmade kitchens of Christchurch !!! Have a Google! Our dream was Neptune too but these guys got us an similar look for a fraction of the price ! They’re in frame and paintable . You design yourself which is where the massive cost is saved .
Lovely to see you🎉
I think having the cooker AWAY from the dining area is better. I like it at the end of the room. And I like your other ideas for change, with the single door on the left, and flipping the cupboards.
Love that Maileg reindeer👌🥰
I went through the same thing with my daughter, but not without guilt until our Scottish infant welfare nurse said: 'Don't worry, she's fine. We worry about bottle or breast feeding and then before you know it, they're off living with some fella.....'.
Yay! New upload!! 🎉❤
I cant wait for this. WTG Mum!
Lovely ideas! X
When you are praying for a good sleep, console yourself. It's just a phase and won't last forever, thank goodness! 😅🥱🥱🥱😴
Love baby update 😊😊
great update…. 🤗
The layout looks cool with the cooker mimicking a chimney breast, am just confused trying to visualise that room in relation to the rest of the house.
Hi Laura , what’s the name of the Sanderson fabric sample you had it’s very pretty !
👏🏻👏🏻
I got a plan from Neptune, and it was nice but there are so many unit sizes that they don't do. I had some firm ideas about certain things I wanted and they tried to persuade me to change them because they couldn't provide the type of unit my idea required.
I adore the cooker there it feels right
I agree. I think in a big space, it makes the cooking area quite cosy but easy to move around.
Seems like moving your sink to the other side would make the function of the kitchen a bit awkward. It does look like a beautiful kitchen.
my daughter in law pump and left milk in the fridge for the nanny to put in a bottle. Most babies don't seem to care as long as you feed them
Have a fab weekend ..🎃🎃🎄🎄Xx
Id leave the kitchen layout as is, it'll be an easier cut through for kiddies from the playroom 😊 xx
❤
Is bumping a mid option for you? Hope it all works out hun
I agree with rebeccatheis your sink facing the window and cooker near sink our you will be walking all over the place ❤
Uh oh - if that's the Mandarin Stone Di Scacchi tumbled marbled tile then it's my fault it's out of stock. I bought so much for my kitchen and then went back to look the next day as I was worried I needed more and it's gone. Sorry! 😄
Looks great but I think having doors near cooker is a bit unsafe with children running in and out.
Your kitchen sink looking into the backyard would also be nice, if kids are outside, can have a nice view washing dishes
Think your water tank might b worth some money in scrap metal why don’t you get a quote xx❤❤
Cooker in a great place…it’s out of the walkways
Why would you want your bin in your kitchen island where your be sitting and eating very strange place to add not one bin but two!
Please put the bin near the dishwasher….its a must! Second dishwasher can be place elsewhere
Well good but your fridges are so far away from your cooker that would be too much waste energy keep walking here and there too many times to me .
Maybe she doesn’t cook every day!
OMG Laura, that kitchen design is horrible soo old fashioned.
Please don't do that
❤
