i think the cix confusion is bc the album "cinema" is from is called "chapter 0" but its actually their 4th cb and their debut is "movie star" from the album "chapter 1" 😭 also if ur shocked by how good cinema would be as a debut u should check out their actual debut bc its even better 🤩

TXT’s casual skater outfits were EVERYTHING to me this year!!! they are such a breath of fresh air
Hyuna and Dawns unhinged styling really gives me the most chaotic bisexual couple you will ever meet vibes and I love it 😂 their energy together is just so good too like they are both going equally hard
I'm so happy you included Ateez! As a fashion student, I really love their distinct style. Whenever I see their stages, I'm always in awe like "Wow as expected of Ateez" and I always take fashion cues from their outfits. Because of them, I've definitely ventured to more experimental clothes
I'm not into K-pop. But I always enjoy your K-pop style videos...and the fashion is really cool...I actually purchased a harness thanks to you... love it
Loved that you mentioned Ateez and Everglow as some of the best styled groups of the year. The Ateez stylists always knock it out of the park and deserve a lot more credit. They bring us fresh looks while making each Ateez member standout, yet make the group look cohesive all at the same time. Definitely some iconic stage outfits there. Best styled boy group of 2021 in my opinion. For Everglow, I think the stylists did amazing for how well they were able incorporate Everglow's unique concepts through their outfits. It was creative and really changed the game for girl group stage outfits without it looking tacky or weird.
i honestly love the emo punk prince era going on with txt’s tcc: freeze, and their latest tr GODDD i will marry LO$ER=LO♡ER if i can. and the fact that taehyun and yeonjun’s new song PS5 has this rnb type of vibe which is VERY different with what we had, really gets me curious of what they’re gonna give for their next album 👏

About BTS, I totally agree. The styling isn't bad imo, i actually liked the ptd cowboy ones and the butter sweatsuits, but I def agree that it's a lot more toned down than what we're used to. Like compared to all the modern hanbok costumes they had through 2018-2020 the outfits for butter and ptd seemed simple. But we def got back on track with the ptd on stage outfits, especially the white ones. I'm guessing that as they get older they're more into cleaner cuts but I feel like the stylists could still spice it up a little more like they did with the Black Swan outfits
My personal top3 would be Ateez, Somi and TXT. Ateez are my #1 bc they never miss yet always manage to still keep things unique. Somi relies a lot on trends and the outfits are definitely more casual but always so exciting, like i always look forward to her stages even though I don't stan. And TXT are experimental which can be a miss at times but they have really unique outfits that are always very conceptual but as you said trendy
some of my favorite styling of the year was TAEYEON. her weekend comeback was giving exactly what it needed to give and more. the pink/barbie/retro vibe was so good??? i’m so surprised she didn’t get more recognized.

my biggest kpop fashion icons are definitely Hyuna and Ateez' Hongjoong like they just 💕😭
Loved hearing your perspective on all things kpop styling for 2021. A styling choice that I personally thought was *chef's kiss* were the vampire-inspired suit looks that NCT 127 wore during their "Favorite" stages.
As much as I love nct 127, their styling for favorite lacked soooo much imo. I was extremely underwhelmed. There were a few good stage outfits for individual members, but overall it felt very lazy compared to sticker.
I definitely love SF9 outfits during their performances with "Tear Drop"; they're amazing there
SF9 amazed me this year. With Kingdom especially but even outside of that their comeback outfits were chef's kiss

AHHH im so glad you mentioned "american tv" specifically... like i get that there's always an attempt to appeal to the audience but as a (queer) american who loves the fashion in kpop, it's always disappointing when the stylists turn idols into walking stereotypes of american culture or when they play into the toxic masculinity that doesn't let men wear anything remotely coded as feminine. it's also kinda weird bc american society places higher importance on individuality than korean society does, but it feels like almost every kpop performance meant for an american audience ends up being significantly MORE uniform than any other stage performed in korea..??? (txt magic for gma, enhypen tamed-dashed for kelly clarkson, twice the feels for the tonight show, stray kids maniac for the late show, etc.)
also about bts -- i feel like they were really attacked for looking feminine when they first got the spotlight in the us (which, hello, was pretty much showing the entire world that the dominant society is aggressively heteronormative), so maybe that's why their style became so subdued for their english releases..? it's like their stage outfits became more reflective of america's messed up definition of masculinity than even the bts members' own personal styles. they're much more experimental and trendy in real life than most of their stage outfits were, which is kinda odd.. not that a clean-cut suit is a bad thing at all, but when it's the same for every single stage...idk i feel like the stylists kept playing it way too safe and on top of that sometimes failed to dress certain members according to their body shape.
EDIT: yes, the concert outfits were everything i was missing from their other stages - and maybe that's bc the audience is literally only army in that situation, so there's a freedom to embrace their style preferences instead of catering the looks to a judgmental and heteronormative audience..?

The best styling in kpop for 2021 was definitely Enhypen’s Fever and Drunk Dazed like those really transformed my life and now they’re a huge inspiration for my wardrobe but Kpop also in general is a huge fashion inspiration

Your SHINee outfit is so good. Need more mermaid concepts. I also liked BamBams Ribbon comeback. The styling itself wasn't crazy but the pieces he wore and the suits were really unique and I felt like they suited him well.
Got to agree, BTS is my fav group and I think the styling this year overall was pretty meh compared to previous years especially their American promotional stuff I feel like the styling team is toning it down a lot (some of the stage outfits I love though!)

a group you didn't mention but has my all time favorite styling in an mv this year was seventeen! hitori janai was a japanese release back in april, and the looks are definitely more wearable and casual, but the way every seventeen mv plays with colors is so impressive to me. totally in line with what you were saying about set dressing as well. also, styling THIRTEEN MEMBERS cohesively with unique personal style??? really impressive. sometimes i wonder if i their individuality is like... "assigned" by the stylists, but then i remember that they dress themselves for the majority of their going seventeen shoots and how well that all aligns with the style they show on stage... yeah, they really have their personal style down. i suppose that's what happens when you stay together for as long as they have!

I loved this video so much. As someone who was temporarily on hiatus since discovering the kpop scene years ago and that has just recently rejoined this gave a phenomenal overview of several different groups in a cohesive manner and showed the styling directions of each. I miss when there were American tv shows that focused on music and groups like this whether it was MTV or BET. Your takes on their fashion sense and recreations were so on par. 🤩🤩
So...I had never heard of ANY of these bands before watching your videos (and I still don't hear anyone else in real life/my corner of the internet talking about Kpop), but your analysis of the styling is always on point. The styling itself is super interesting--especially your comment about how to cohesively dress NINE people! Basically, I just want to say that even though this music isn't my taste and I have no connection to any of it...you make the fashion super interesting every time!

Hi! I enjoyed this form of video, it was really interesting to watch. The only thing missing for me is time I had to have a look on the outfits. Often I just stopped to video to have a closer look. I would love to see some kind of analysis (what you like about particular outfit, what brings yours attention etc.), have more time with each outfit you mention. Or maybe its just me not having enough with the beautiful outfits haha

Watching this video as inspiration for coming up with stage outfits for our yearly dance performance (kpop choreo!) And this video is such a great summary of the past year. The problem is is that I have so many ideas and inspiration but I really can't expect all my team members to have as extra closets as I have and we can't spend a bunch of money (what a dream it would be to be able to design from scratch)

As an Army, I understand everything you mentioned about BTS styling. For MVs and American tv appearances, they were styled more 'plainly', as in "hey we look damn good in anything we wear anyway" sort of way. I didn't like the Western styling in PTD, but I agree that the concert outfits were amazing and way more exciting to see. Hello BTS performing Chicken Noodle Soup and Daechwita

This video was so much fun Katie! I will listen to Xdinary Heroes now as that sounds like a song for me... Personally, I am more into the k-hip hop & k-r'n'b than kpop (but somehow it was my third most listened to genre in 2021 🤪). That being said even the songs/bands I am not a massive fan of often have the best styling and awesome aesthetically pleasing music videos.
