What Languages Did Jesus Speak? | Theology Academy

  • We still are not entirely sure which language or languages Jesus spoke in first-century Judea and Galilee. Remember, Hebrew was the ancestral language of the Jews and the Torah, Aramaic was the common language, and Greek was the language of civilization. In this video, we'll take a look at the evidence from the Bible and external evidence to determine what languages Jesus spoke.
    Excerpt:
However, one can ask: how widespread was Greek in first-century Palestine? The use
of Greek differed from region to region and from one social class to another. However,
these differences were not significant since even the well-known Jewish historian,
Josephus, did not have a good grasp of the Greek language despite using it when he
wrote about the history of the Jews.

In high school, my theology teacher said that Jesus was probably trilingual. I remember thinking that He was probably "omnilingual" if that's a word, being that He's God.

@lifestylepretoria9181 Not sure what that has to do with the topic, but hebrew comes form paleo hebrew which in turn comes directly from God himself.
I would say Hebrew is pretty much a dead language and not one person on the planet properly speaks it. People say language revived Isreal but language is pretty messed up being mixed with Yiddish. Paleo Hebrew is an interesting language, letters are sounds, numbers, and pictures with meaning which mix, fir example Jesus says he is the first and last which is hebrew letters alef and tav. Alef's pic is a bull for a leader, and tav which is a sideways cross as in crucifix . Anyhow hope that answers the question. Maybe the confusion is that much of new testamentis not in hebrew.

WRONG. ARAMAIC is the mother language of all Middle-Eastern languages such as Hebrew, Assyrian , Chaldean, arabic, Phoenician, and some other languages. The rest have started as accents of the Aramaic language as spoken by different people. The alphabet is the same, the grammar is the same, the vocabulary is somewhat different, the pronunciation of the words is different from language to another. For example, the English American is different from the British English, the Irish English, the Scottish English, the Gaelic English, the Southern-American English, the Texan English, the Jamaican English, the Australian English, ... They all use the same grammar and alphabet but different vocabulary/vocal pronunciations.
A person who understands the Aramaic can understand (with little difficulty) the Hebrew, the arabic, the Assyrian (or Syriac), the Chaldean pronunciations of the phrases.
Besides, our ONLY Lord/God Jesus Christ, is capable to speak any language/accent/dialect of any language on Earth. Every year, HE communicates with thousands of different people around Earth in their own languages, dialects and accents. This is a FACT.

i didn't find the example of the "debts" translation as compelling. also in these pro-aramaic vids, it's always somehow skipped that Aram is Persia and aramaics would be Persians. the assertions in the video are not backed up with sources. quoting scholars without going to their sources, either, doesn't help.
i'm coming from CI material which makes broader claims for Greek. it seems obvious to me that the original New Testament (the Received Text) has always been in Greek (with Hebrew and maybe Aramaic loan words hellenized and mixed in). this makes more sense to me as Greek was the official language of the Roman empire until around 300 AD (!) and Palestine had long been a province that was conquered by Macabees (Greek speakers, Greek calendar promoters etc).
this is my understanding up to this point.

Jesus Christ's language was only Aramaic (also known as Syriac) and used Aramaic Old Testament. Not Greek or Hebrew. Aramaic New Testament (Aramaic Eastern Peshitta) is actually the original New Testament which was later translated into Greek by Greek scholars who knew Greek and Aramaic. Aramaic Old Testament available today is known as Aramaic Peshitta Tanakh. Josephus points out his nation didn't encourage the learning of Greek and Hebrews knowing Greek were extremely rare in first century AD (Antiquities of Judeans XX, XI).
Mattathias, his 5 sons, and their Hebrew supporters defeated Seleucid Dynasty and kicked Hellenism out of Israel which we read in 1 Maccabees. They also were in alliances with the Romans and the Spartans who opposed Seleucids (1 Maccabees 8, 1 Maccabees 12, 1 Maccabees 14). In 142 BC, Israel became fully independent under Simon (the brother of Judas Maccabeus) and it was Government of Israel. Government of Israel became Kingdom of Israel in 104 BC. Starting from 63 BC, Kingdom of Israel became semi-autonomous with Romans when the Romans (under Pompey) conquered Jerusalem in support of Hyrcanus II and threw out Hyrcanus II's younger brother Aristobulus II who was in power.
Fourth Kingdom in Book of Daniel was Kingdom of Israel which was destroyed in fire in 70 AD (Daniel 2, Daniel 7 verses 11, 23).
Aramaic completely replaced Old Hebrew as the language of Hebrews during Babylonian Captivity. Hebrew was revived only during Bar Kokhba revolt (132 AD to 135 AD) by False Messiah Simon Bar Kokhba as part of his false messianic idealogy. This Hebrew is called Mishnaic Hebrew which evolved and later became Masoretic Hebrew. Masoretic Hebrew was used to write Hebrew Old Testament (also known as Hebrew Masoretic Text) which was written several centuries after Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, many people mistakenly calls Masoretic Hebrew as Biblical Hebrew.
I also covered many details at my posts at quora under my name.
Many verses in Greek New Testament added Greek which is not in Aramaic New Testament (Aramaic Eastern Peshitta).
Beqel dama is an error. In Aramaic, it is "Haqal Dama" (also known as Khqel Dama). "Dama" is "Blood" and "Haqal" is "Field".

Aramaic was the lingua franca of first century AD which was also pointed out by Dead Sea Scrolls Archaeologist Yigael Yadin. I also wrote an article about New Testament being written in Aramaic at quora in great detail.

Jasus' mother tongue was Aramaic. But he should have had no difficulty in conversing in Hebrew being a twin language. It defies logic that Jesus' trial before Pilate would have been in anything but Hebrew or Aramaic. However Pilate had only one relevant question to ask. "Are you king of the Jews"? This in all probability would have been in Aramaic for Pilate to be sure that the question was not misunderstood.

    My response to another video,,,
Jesus may have spoken and understood Aramaic. However it is difficult to know for certain his chosen most spoken tongue, though the catholic church believes he spoke Nazarene Aramaic because it is thought to have been commonly spoken in that area at that time. But they also have bad Latin source material for what they have for a Holy Bible. Constantine's Hebrew/Greek bible then KJV is the closest translated to English Holy Bible ever made. No argument intended so moving on.
The New Testament however was copied by the disciples disciples into mostly Greek and most of the Old Testament came from Hebrew and only some Aramaic. However it is also accounted that Mathew wrote a LOT of his first Gospels in Hebrew.
The region could even be considered multilingual like Arizona (several Indian tongues, Mexican and other types of hispanic) and Florida (type of hispanic Cuban/Puerto Rican as well as other Native tongues) But though both states are considered multi lingual the prime langue is still English.
Since Jesus spoke to Romans such as Pilate and the Centurion and it's unlikely they spoke Aramaic so Jesus most certainly spoke Greek and POSSIBLY in a stretch Latin but very thin. AND, Hebrew is considered the true language of the Jews AND Jesus read at Synagogue so he most likely knew AND spoke Hebrew. He spoke with Samaritans who's main language was Hebrew so it's most likely again that he spoke Hebrew.
Of course being Divine he would know all languages BUT going through a life of man he may have at least had to learn them while here. So did he speak Aramaic? Probably but it's far more likely that the King of Jews chosen language would have been. Hebrew but he most likely knew Greek AND/OR Aramaic. But, we don't know for certain and this is all really just for fun as it wasn't important and only the message of Jesus who is the son AND is also God,,,, Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost is what truly matters.
My "guess" however? All three, with Hebrew as the main and Greek as the second and he probably did know Aramaic. Which mirrors the facts I've read. Since the main source for Aramaic comes from the thinking that it was a common tongue in the days of Jesus walking as a man, seems to be the ENTIRE basis for thinking Jesus spoke Aramaic.. Well, that is a pretty strong bit of evidence but the ENTIRE rest of the evidence points to Hebrew as well as at least passable Greek. There is no exact evidence he spoke Aramaic but he "probably" did.
And truthfully I could have this the wrong way round but that's where the evidence points.

@@hocares6983 You are confused. Where did I say that Aramaic is Hebrew?
I am referring to Hebrew tongue. The tongue of Hebrews in first century AD was Aramaic.
During Babylonian Captivity, Aramaic replaced Old Hebrew as the language of Hebrews.
Aramaic continued to be the language of Hebrews until Hebrew was revived in the form of "Mishnaic Hebrew" during Bar Kokhba revolt (132 to 135 AD) by False Messiah Simon Bar Kokhba.
Mishnaic Hebrew later evolved and became Masoretic Hebrew.

The translators knew that Romaisti was referring to Roman tongue. So they translated this as Latin.
But when they saw Ebraisti, they translated it as Hebrew instead of translating it as Hebrew tongue which was Aramaic as that time.
In John 19 verse 17, we see Golgotha being called Hebrew. But this is transliteration of an Aramaic word. "tha" in Golgotha is Aramaic definite article on a feminine noun in an emphatic state.

@@hocares6983 Like I said, where did I say that Aramaic and Hebrew are one and the same language?
They are two different languages belonging to Semitic family. But Aramaic replaced Old Hebrew as the language of Hebrews during Babylonian Captivity.
Aramaic replaced Old Hebrew to the point where Aramaic became synonymous with Hebrew in first century AD and early second century AD prior to Bar Kokhba revolt (132 AD to 135 AD).
When they say Hebrew in first century, they are referring to Hebrew tongue which was Aramaic at that time.
Just like when we say German, we are referring to German tongue which is Deutsch.

    Acts 26:14
[14]And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Correct. By the power of His Divinity He does; however, he took our full Humanity and hence needed to go through school, education, etc.
