Pictures depict properties being boarded up in preparation for the two-day event, expected to draw 2 million people this weekend, sparking questions about whether the event should be relocated entirely.
Alex Phillips clashes with campaigner Ken Hinds over moving the Notting Hill Carnival to Hyde Park so that residents would not be 'disturbed'.

My village and town next to us had their own Carnivals each year for decades and their was no trouble, they always used to travel along main roads to village/town park respectively where there used to be fair ground attractions set up everybody had a blast all day. But by time I hit high school it all had to be cancelled because insurance costs went skyhigh for lorries and tractor and trailers to be used as floats and carry members of public on and no one could raise that kind of money, they tried to have all the various groups that would have been on floats walk it instead, but parent and child groups/mother and baby group/primary school groups/young members of martial arts clubs/school bands/and old person groups and those representing local hospices, retirement homes couldn't do it, ripped the heart out of the whole thing - coming together as a whole community and community cohesion. Yet these majority black groups in Notting Hill have no problem funding their floats and skyhigh insurance costs every year. How??

As a security worker, I cannot understand how this event is allowed to go on every year. A million people in a street… if someone has an epileptic seizure, their waters break, a heart attack, they faint, how on earth are we supposed to get that person out of there for medical help? How on earth is this allowed to take place in streets where no one can get in to help someone in medical distress?

My Trinidadian dad used to take me to carnival in Trinidad most years during school holidays growing up, then one year he decided to take me to the Notting Hill one. At around 10 years old (1978) I got lost in the chaos and if it wasn't for the 'white' police there who took me and found my dad, god knows what would have happened. We never went there again. There is a massive difference between the two events. I'd take my chances at the Trinidad one any day. Also, Black people 'rented' in Notting Hill back in the day - they didn't own. Someone tell him white privilege does not exist, as a mixed race person, that statement is so outdated and cringy.

I’m black, and I’m here in England studying for a PhD, to be very honest, even if they were to share £100 to anyone going for that carnival, I’d never ever be part of it. I'm a secondary "School Estate Manager" in East London.. The School was built in the 1920's, well before the houses that are now opposite were built.. The people who moved into those houses knew there was a School on the other side of the road. Yet they moan about the bells, the students at lunch, the students leaving School..

I lived there for 45 years, I moved away . Portobello road absolutely stinks for weeks afterwards and it ruins the lives of the people that live there, should be stopped forever.

To say that 'black people owned those big houses' is absolute nonsense! As a young boy 50+ years ago, I had (white) family living in those areas (Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove, Portobello). That entire part of London was a shytehole and residents were mostly poor - both black and white - living in 'flats' within those big houses. And most of the flats weren't conversions or even self-contained.
The rooms on each floor were rented out as a single flat but there were no doors separating the flats, so if you wanted to go from your living room into your bedroom, you'd have to walk out onto the communal hallway and would often bump into the other residents making their way up or down the stairs. And toilets, usually on half-landings were shared (zero bathrooms). The rent in the 1960's was roughly 30-60 shillings a week (£1.50-£3.00 in decimal currency).
I remember it well, as we too used to live in one of those 'flats' but in Pimlico, also an area full of poor residents back in the 1960's. Most of the big houses in these poor parts of London were owned either by local Councils or by wealthy landlords, often slumlords, and many were Jewish not black.
Went to carnival once 17 years ago - never went back and never will. Bubbling atmosphere of violence isn't my idea of a wonderful time.
