  • @ejcandelaria

This was so helpful. The quality, time, and effort put in the entire tutorial was definitely not what I expected to come across through a simple quick search. I describe myself as a "flavoured newbie" because I've been playing around with GarageBand the past couple of years, like a little kid out on the loose in a toy store, clicking and experimenting with all buttons my eyes landed on, clearly not knowing what the heck I was doing and for whatever purpose lol. I thought maybe it was about time I try to gain, in the least, some understanding on those buttons.
Anyway, the world of art and music doesn't deserve you! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm sure future artists who will look into exploring their creativities someday will appreciate this so much when their times come... TO THOSE OF YOU WATCHING THIS TUTORIAL, give Charles's works of art a listen! His song, Nothing But The Glory, hit me hard haha

Same. I’m a simple man. I write compositions with wood/strings and write lyrics with wood and paper. lol. Can’t say I find a lot of joy in it but it’s needed so I’ve been trying to cram it in so it becomes second nature. I usually go for the most clean and simplistic sound.

DAWSOME! I thought using a DAW was going to be really difficult. I was able to follow everything you so clearly explained, and now to experiment and finally produce something (actually ANYTHING). I've been collecting the equipment, instruments (flute, clarinet, several basses, mic, etc.), midi controllers (keyboards, EWI, pads, etc, etc. and more on the way [Artiphon I1 and a Orba]) for a few years and now it's finally time for me to make music. Thank you for this vid for beginners (I'm 69yo, so NOT a total beginner in music!).

Thank you Charles! I am a beginner and want to help my daughter who is a singer/songwriter produce her own music. You were easy to follow and had a calm and steady voice. I also liked that you are a very good teacher and the videos pace was perfect for me. I liked that every minute I was learning (all value and no fluff) meaning I did not get bored or frustrated because you left your ego out of it and just kept in the education and value throughout the video. I really feel I have a basic understanding and can now explore GarageBand on my MacBook Pro. I have avoided it in the past due to complete ignorance. Thank you so much for giving up some of your knowledge and valuable time to help others. After my daughter, Sophia Lund, and I produce some original music... I will pass it on to you:) You are amazing! In Gratitude! Terri L.

How come your Steinway Grand Piano sounds sooo soft and smooth? I tried to adjust it so it sounds just like yours a lot but for the life of me couldn't and settled for a modified Pop Key Producer, but, how did you do it so that the Steinway sounds so good, like seriously, that actually surprises me a lot.
EDIT (for everyone else who might have the same problem): The Velocity seems to do the trick. While the Steinway Grand Piano sounds rather rough with its default settings, lowering the velocity gives it, no pun intended, a softer touch and removes the strain from playing the keys. Usually the velocity is 98, you can see this very good in the Musical Typing window (command K), and can change it there to a more moderate lower velocity. anything between 20 and 50 is a lot more pleasant to listen to, and this does a great deal of delight with other instruments, too.

In less than 2 hours, this FREE, clear, succinct, comprehensive, well-produced (love the zoom-ins/outs!), and practical tutorial showed me how to get GB up and running. An extraordinary gift from @CharlesCleyn, much appreciated (and subscribed for more). ¡Gracias!

Funny thing is I have done about 30 songs on Spotify using Garageband to record my guitars, bass, and Band In a Box for the rest, and checking out this tutorial now. And still learning a lot since I haven't done much midi before, just recording analoge playing. Very good video!

Thank you so much for your tutorial! It's helped me sooooo very much. I've been managing in GarageBand by just trying different things and have actually created some ok music. I felt limited so I finally decided to try a tutorial. It was worth every minute! You explain everything so well. You did a deep dive for a beginner like myself. I feel like I can really enhance what I've been doing.

Wow, Charles, you are a fantastic teacher! I have struggled to learn how to record my music. I'm a performing musician and have also watched my college students use Pro Tools, but when I tried it I hit a brick wall really fast. Then tried a couple other DAWs, but just wasn't getting it. I finally decided that I have to learn GB because it was easier and it's right on my Mac, but it wasn't as intuitive as I was hoping. So I found your tutorial, and it is exactly what I need. You seem to really grasp what a beginner needs to know. You are extremely thorough, calm and supportive. Thank you so much for offering this great tutorial.

Excellent introduction - with considerable breadth - to GarageBand. Great for guitarists like me looking to understand the basics of working with audio, MIDI, and the new Drummer track, presets, EQ, Plug-ins, and more in GB. Really a useful 1.5 hours (especially if you follow along with your own tracks in GB; it will take longer but you'll really learn it that way). By the end, you'll understand everything on your screen in GB and you're ready to ready to record a demo.
I used Logic years ago but it was always overwhelming with the complexity. GarageBand, on the other hand, seems like just the right amount of parameters I need to get demos done.
Perhaps the only thing I had to go elsewhere to learn about was comping audio takes. A really great video I can't recommend enough. Thanks!

This was such a good tutorial! Thank you! I can't stand tutorials that say "for Beginners" but they still expect that youl know a bunch of preliminary things that aren't discussed, like lingo, or what types of problems might be encoutnered and why and how to fix it. thank you thank you.

Thanks ever so much for the free GarageBand tutorial PDF download. It comes very handy indeed after watching for more than a couple times the almost two hours of in detail GarageBand Guide For Beginners you've so elegantly put together on your channel here - you're a gifted educator Charles - your contribution in audio/music tech knowledge sharing it's greatly appreciated.
I'm a retired performing arts practitioner in education, production and performance and familiar with the basics of using a DAW but it is seventeen years since I've worked on MacOS environment and your careful guidance is very useful to have to hand before purchasing a modern Apple PowerBook.👍👌

As a trained keyboard musician, but knowing nothing about digital recording and having a Mac with GarageBand preinstalled, I was eager to know how I could use my musical skills to record and enhance my playing. Your video has opened up a new world to me, and you have taken the time to explain GB features so clearly. I can also hook up my keyboards via MIDI so I’m set to go! Many, many thanks for your help.
