This video answered a burning question for me. "Is Garageband 'good enough' to develop skill and move towards making great art? The answer as demonstrated by Nathan is .. "oh yeah it is!". I didn't hear Nathan saying he felt significantly limited by Garageband for this use case. More like he worked with what was available and was able to produce something semi-pro sounding rather than something too limited to be viable. Both tracks are great. We all know the pro made a more polished version, but the beginner did quite a good job for someone who's only been doing this for a few months. I'd listen to both versions again.
Both tracks were solid. The pro brought more tools to the show, which ultimately led to a much richer track. I think this sort of battle would be better served if one of the producers hadn't created the base stems. Since Nathan wrote and created the core stems, he's got a significant advantage over the novice. Agreed, Dexter's track was a great listen.
Yeah I noticed that too. Pro isn't necessarily a better song. It would've made a way better song if pro worked off and expanded on beginners starter song
As a rookie producer myself, I thought both were Amazing for different reasons. One had a edgy almost ready to explode vibe. The other a more polished pop vibe. Can’t wait to see Dexter exploding onto the music scene 😀 I’m assuming due to the talent and work Nathan did on his track he’s pretty much there and if not, he should be 😜. Well done guys, such a brilliant video!
I really love Dexter's version - largely BECAUSE he doesn't use drums - it's akin to an acoustic version and the simplicity and minor key vibe draws me in - I would wholeheartedly agree that adding drums for the NEXT part of the song, the unwritten second verse, would be amazing to step it up. It's like he understands that it's a short song, like a short film, where you can't do everything you'd do in a longer song/feature film, so you create a snapshot of potential for a bigger production. Both are fantastic though and I'd love to hear a full version of the song
I have to say, first off both of those were incredible!!! But also as a beginning producer, I’m glad to see so much can be done with GarageBand. I’m mainly using it to mess around and seeing what can be done with it really inspires me

Guys you both have done something really cool, and I love seeing and feeling the way the way each of you manage to create a very different and unique arrangement, but I'd very much enjoy the receptive warmth way you both react to one another arrangement. Well done you both, Cheers!!
*To the people who think Nathan only added more instruments, it's very difficult to get the right instruments for ur goal, adding anything more and more is called "over producing" which can sound very bad and the way he did was actually good as he's a pro, and for beginners (as I once was) it's difficult to get more beats and "different tunes" that will harmonize and add up to the music, u aways just keep discovering by experimenting*
This is a great idea Nathan! Really enjoyed both versions. Though Nathan's experience does make a difference, Dexter's love of music and talent shine their own lovely light! Bravo!!
As someone who is dabbling in this area, this was very interesting to me, specifically the thought process of why certain instruments were chosen once the direction of where each of you felt the song should go. Sometimes I think the difference between the pro and amateur is the confidence the pro has thru experience and practice. Well done, fellas!
I love how positive and supportive you are. I've been getting more into the mixing and producing aspect of my music lately and I love your videos and tips and have been getting a lot of ideas from your videos, especially the pro vs beginners. Thank you so much for doing what you do. By the way, you both did awesome
Great job Dexter! Keep at it! Having spent some time on this journey myself, I'd say that what this clearly illustrates (GB vs Logic notwithstanding) is that as you develop experience with producing, one thing that changes is the depth of the production - the number of instruments/harmonic ideas and percussive elements. "Overproduced" is a real thing of course, so the other experience is how to carve out space for elements and knowing when to stop. Great video!
That was a really cool video I thought both tracks had much too offer and took creative twist. I do have to say that the pro track sounded a lot fuller and took more advantage of a wider variety of instruments.
Hey Dexter, great job on that track, the only thing it lacked was some experience, so keep at it because you've got a really solid base. Forget about the haters, the internet is their playground.
@@jpmaroney yeah right, that's one too. But at the "i know that u sayin' all the right things now, how i would suppose to know..."part, imho, really sounds like "u juz want attention, u dont want my heart, maybe u juz hate the thought of me...". I thought exactly the same! I felt like this song has much influence from Charlie Puth's, "Attention"...even from the moment I heard the unproduced version(just guitar and vocals)my mind just went straight into that Charlie Puth song.
Dexter is the artist with talent, nathen is the professional music producer. They both bring a lot to the table, would love to see them do a project together. Where dexter does the computing and basic ideas of the arrangement and nathen fills out the arrangement and puts the bells and whistles and makes a smooth production.
dexter had that james blake thing going, realy nice and nathan yours makes me think of timberlake, so damnn.. enjoyed them both equal ! (although production quality on yours is just mindboggling in such a short time)

Without listening to the finished track, the pro wins!. After listening the pro crushed it!! WOW. The beginner was great also. Very impressed with his production and what he was able to put together.
I like the newbie one so much more, it was just so DIFFERENT, even tho it was clearly less going on musically I know, but sometimes less is more - the vocals were dope!
I loooved this! Great job, both of y’all. Dexter’s was fun..I really liked the vibe of his. I loved the build up and beat drop of Nathan’s. It’s crazy how different production can make a song sound like two completely different songs.

I definitely enjoyed both. Personally the style that Dexter did resonated with me better (just preferences lol) and I think it would be amazing to take what he did and turn it into a full length song using your skills to really polish it out. (I really hope that all made sense)

I’m a newby at everything- beginning Logic Pro, needing to fall back on GarageBand; didn’t know that my server was what was keeping me from exporting to a friend, they clued me in to check my Server….I admire both productions because they show me the different approaches to giving a song presence and character. Yayyy for everybody, we’re all winners if we keep on doing…
You even added Guzheng in your track. I think one amazing thing about using Garageband or Logic is that you can really go through the sound bank to find something fresh and good.
Both renditions were great and my comment is mostly for Dexter on "presentation". As you get experience you will find that "EVERY" exposure is important. When you were talking through your processes, there were elements of "good enough" or "that's ok" in your language. if you can .... Remember to be positive all the time. it is infectious and a great habit to have. "I like that beat" or "that fits" or in a pinch "this is something I'll have to learn more of". If you cant go back, at the end, put something in to say "you tweaked it" or similar to show you went back on something that you thought could be better. in the old days it was "always put your best foot forward" . Now when everyone is watching and is an armchair critic, putting the right vibes out there will win for you. Great work
Absolutely, I started on GarageBand a loonnnng time ago. If you want to be serious then you def would want to upgrade but not necessary for hobbyists or beginners!

I'm here on behalf of the world, asking for an update on this. 🙏
I looove both versions it's wild how the music can make a song feel and sound completely like a whole different song. Totally different vibes, just kudos to you both! Love your videos thank you!
This song kinda sounds like Attention by Charlie Puth Just the vocal melody reminded me of it
Maybe too much? But possibly that’s on purpose.
The chord progression is the same, but it is normal
Yeah I was looking for this comment lol
dexters reminds me of another song but idk the name of it
Or Stevie T. That's what I thought of first 😆

I like both and again it is proven that creativity is king, i lost a lot time looking for sound or gear, resulting in lots of time is LOST
Thank you for the amazing video
Both were good from different standpoints.
Nice work from Dexter. He came up with the goods, a different style.
Guys you both have done something really cool, and I love seeing and feeling the way the way each of you manage to create a very different and unique arrangement, but I'd very much enjoy the receptive warmth way you both react to one another arrangement. Well done you both, Cheers!!
Dexter keep learning and making it happen, great go!!
Yes yes yes!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥😎😎😎😎
Pro sounds like "Attention" - Beginner sounds like Mallory Knox
*To the people who think Nathan only added more instruments, it's very difficult to get the right instruments for ur goal, adding anything more and more is called "over producing" which can sound very bad and the way he did was actually good as he's a pro, and for beginners (as I once was) it's difficult to get more beats and "different tunes" that will harmonize and add up to the music, u aways just keep discovering by experimenting*
The song sounds like a typical pop song in the radio however the video is still worth a watch for the hidden gems in it
Dexter: Love your attitude, approach and result. Awesome. Nathan: Meh, 2/10 - jokes mate, that kicked in really, really hard. Loved it!
Haha Dexter truly did fantastic not only creatively but on camera did great! Thanks! 🔥😎

I’m rooting for the newbie simply because, he has a Metrocard NYC!!!

My dad uses Logic Pro and the software is so complex but so fun. Especially mastering people’s music.
just two random artists appreciating each others calibre..
more of such love is needed in the world in between humans 💝
The melody sounds really close to attention and both of them added a different colour and texture to the song ❤️
This is a great idea Nathan! Really enjoyed both versions. Though Nathan's experience does make a difference, Dexter's love of music and talent shine their own lovely light! Bravo!!
It doesn’t matter what program you use if matters how you use it :)
Dexter has an amazing voice damn 🔥
Indeed!
cheers simon!!
@@NathanJamesLarsen does he have a TH-cam channel?
Idk there were several missed notes and hollow tone
@@NathanJamesLarsen where can I find his song?
I saw the chorus for this going in more of an 80’s vibe synthy jam
Dexter: Super wavy...Nathan needs to produce Dexter’s version and make a hit.
That was a really cool video I thought both tracks had much too offer and took creative twist. I do have to say that the pro track sounded a lot fuller and took more advantage of a wider variety of instruments.
I gotta say, I really liked dexter's version a bit more. I typically like slower sadder sounds though. But they were both incredible!!!
Hey Dexter, great job on that track, the only thing it lacked was some experience, so keep at it because you've got a really solid base.
Forget about the haters, the internet is their playground.
Maybe i'm crazy, but that's really sounds like attention by charlie puth. Hmmm, pardon this old man's ear problem kids🤣
When I heard it I thought “Charlie Puth” ... groovy tune
@@jpmaroney yeah right, that's one too. But at the "i know that u sayin' all the right things now, how i would suppose to know..."part, imho, really sounds like "u juz want attention, u dont want my heart, maybe u juz hate the thought of me...". Hahahahahajajaja. Good to know that's somebody else have the same thought as me🤣🤣🤣
yeah i got the same vibe
I thought exactly the same! I felt like this song has much influence from Charlie Puth's, "Attention"...even from the moment I heard the unproduced version(just guitar and vocals)my mind just went straight into that Charlie Puth song.
@@JorgeOreMusic yeah man, same wif me. High 5!!!hahahahah
the beginner guys song was DOPE, great counter harmonies
What’s a counter harmony?
"wow I have a lot to learn" 😆 I love his attitude
Dexter is the artist with talent, nathen is the professional music producer. They both bring a lot to the table, would love to see them do a project together. Where dexter does the computing and basic ideas of the arrangement and nathen fills out the arrangement and puts the bells and whistles and makes a smooth production.
Great job by both of you. Makes me think of how important it is for different ideas from different people can breath new life into a great song.
Absolutely! 😎😎🔥🔥
dexter had that james blake thing going, realy nice and nathan yours makes me think of timberlake, so damnn.. enjoyed them both equal ! (although production quality on yours is just mindboggling in such a short time)
Ya, I felt the James Blake vibe, too.
Interesting, two complete versions. Beginner was more creative in his interpretation
I love that the response from both of you was to listen again.
Yoooo these were so good! They're both rich in their own way! The anticipation of hearing new projects is so electrifying! I hope I can be a good producer one day!
Without listening to the finished track, the pro wins!.
After listening the pro crushed it!! WOW.
The beginner was great also. Very impressed with his production and what he was able to put together.
How tf did you mix that song so well in garage band???? whaaaaaaat -.- good job man, this is amazing
Truth is I didn't really do a lot of "mixing" - what made it work was arrangement, performance, and sound selection! Appreciate this! 🔥🔥🙏🙏
If dexters song was mixed proper itd be a slap lol, his voice is amazing
Challenge is nothing, it's the joy and enthusiasm you both share and it makes me feel happy to watch this. GREAT voice Dexter!
I like the newbie one so much more, it was just so DIFFERENT, even tho it was clearly less going on musically I know, but sometimes less is more - the vocals were dope!
How good is Dexter's vibe what a legend
This is good stuff! Like both styles, but experience pays dividends, regardless of software.
Appreciate it! Dexter def got creative and I love it! Gear helps but it isn't the end-all-be-all
I loooved this! Great job, both of y’all. Dexter’s was fun..I really liked the vibe of his. I loved the build up and beat drop of Nathan’s. It’s crazy how different production can make a song sound like two completely different songs.
This was a banger video dude. I just recorded my first guitar track in attempt to create covers in hope to one day produce my own songs. But all very new and foreign at the moment. Dexter well done mate!
I definitely enjoyed both. Personally the style that Dexter did resonated with me better (just preferences lol) and I think it would be amazing to take what he did and turn it into a full length song using your skills to really polish it out. (I really hope that all made sense)
Dexter did do his thing. I was waiting for the drums to drop as well. Other than that it was dope. He won in my opinion.
I loved both ..I
Think it's hot to hear two different perspectives on Artwork ..you can't compare I really think it's a matter preference
Once you achieve quality sound and sonic control..you both walked into a beautiful concept from jumpstart.its like quality oil paint and watercolor paper
Nice work..nathan you are on another level

Dexter - that's genius dude - amazing effort and kudos to you to putting it out there. The learning can be long journey but as you prove it can also be fun. Kudos to you! Just saying - Nathan and Dexter - you should pencil in a Round 2 for same time in 2021 and let Dexter show us how it's done. Well done - that was a lot of fun - credit to you both for encouraging learning and reminding us that music is about joy, creativity and challenging yourself as an artist.
thanks for the kind words dave! i had so much fun making this track that i’m really doubling down on my commitment to myself to become proficient with the software tools - and comments like this encourage me even more!
Dexter's version is very special and minimalistic , actually giving impression of extremely artistic and professional.
Guzhen is kinda pronounced like “goo journ” (journey). Hope this helps.
Mmmmm, Chicken goo-journ
Dexter’s version kinda sounds like a Chet Faker song. 😲 Nathan’s version sounds like a Charlie Puth song. 🙌🏻
Nathan‘s version sounds more like the song ‚Eastside‘ by Halsey
Totally! Reminds me of “Attention” 😁
Sounds like it was inspired by Charlie Puth's "Attention". Nathan's vocal tonality also sounds somewhat like Ed Sheeran's which is also interesting.
@@JohnTurri yeah
You’re right, that had an Imagine Dragons feel.
Great work
Hear me out: Dexter’s voice, on Nathan’s version of the song
Garage band is a viable option for beginners, it’s all about technique over gear and plugins😁 great content as always🔥
Absolutely, I started on GarageBand a loonnnng time ago. If you want to be serious then you def would want to upgrade but not necessary for hobbyists or beginners!
@@NathanJamesLarsen I agree 100 percent! It’s way to easy to get caught up in gear/software and not make music
Only been producing a few month still has OP-1
Im smelling cap
Great video... and the pro is a pro, sounds great. Dexter! you just show that imagination and ears are the most important tools of a producer. Mad props to Dexter.
I see what you guys did there.... Your thumbnail makes it look like Nathan is going to get owned big time, but then you flip it big time! Awesome video and two years later, that track is still 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥!!
