I started out 2023 with over 20k in debt. After watching Caleb's videos my goal was to be debt free by 2024. After saving 10k in my HYS account for my emergency fund. Now I only have 900 dollars left of debt. Almost there 🤞
Sharing some good news. Graduated with $80k in student loan debt and after about 2 years of working I’m down to $30k. Fingers crossed I’ll be done by end of next year
One thing to note about the rental issue is that it is valid to not pay rent for issues that are not being completed, but you must hold the money in an account showing that you are able to pay rent after the complaints are resolved. Another item to note is that Colorado does not have a law requiring landlords to have air conditioners installed or maintained within the property, so that may be why lawyers are not taking on this case if that is the main reason for not paying rent.
That was my call out. You need to read your lease. If the rental included an AC, they must maintain whatever was in the rental to start with. But you need to put the money in savings or escrow. Or use a portion of it to remedy the situation. But you need to know the laws in your state, and municipality.
Yes but you must go through legal steps to get a court approval to use an escrow account. You cannot just pay rent into escrow without approval to do so.
@@penitent2401 no you can’t no landlord has the ac as part of the contract and all appliances are as is. Unless you live ina very hot area where ac is required by law you are not correct. Caleb! Speaking as a Mother who claims my children as dependents on taxes every single year ...I PROMISE you that your Mom knows your social security number.
My dad died in 2008 and when I arrived at funeral home to make arrangements they had already run my credit… I was puzzled and they told me that my step mother literally pulled out the old tax returns and pulled my social security number off the return and gave to the gentlemen that came to collect my dad’s body!!!
Why would that matter? As a Swiss person it baffles me that that is all you need to open an account somewhere. What can you do when you know someone's middle name? Sign them up for the military for life? I need to go to the bank with my passport to open an account. They copy it and compare it to my signature. I imagine that some other things are checked as well. So strange, that knowing someone's social security number would have this impact.
@LissaDIY You don't even NEED that much to open an account in someone's name. When my mother in law died my husband was executor of the estate and opened up accounts for his niece and nephew for their inheritance when they reach 18. He tried to get their social security number from his brother, but his brother ghosted him (because his brother was cut out of the will). The bank said "it's OK, we don't need their social security number for you to open an account for them anyway"

She shouldnt have to though since its largely not her fault. As an african-american she is dealing with systemic racism and generational poverty. The government should be assisting with all of her expenses.
@@truebengalsfan The first thing to improve is to realize your faults. And Afro-americans were faulted seriously. When my husband and I were discussing our plan to tackle our debt these past 2 days, we kept saying “Well Caleb said to…” lol Caleb you are part of our little fam. Keep up the great videos. 🤗
Caleb if I may suggest: Your "Hammer Financial Score" should include a metric that grades the Income - Needs ratio. Daphne has 50% of her income available to her to tackle her debt or build wealth. That makes her real financial situation infinitely better than what many other guests have. But her Hammer score is just as bad as the others.
He should have a casual score for every day people trying to get out of debt, who need to budget, and ER fund is not fully funded etc and then an advanced one for people with no debt with an ER fund who are focusing on owning property, investing in retirement, saving, etc. otherwise most people just score basically a 0 and it's pointless
Finally someone who cares about her finances more than or equal to how much Caleb cares! Usually they are flippant, blame shifters and never take accountability. She is a breath of fresh air.
My husband’s SS# was stolen & literally found out when contacted by the state of California regarding our state income tax return. You can't just not pay rent. You have to pay into a side account and regularly notify them in writing of each and every problem, including police reports and use that in court to not pay rent. Doing it her way means she still has to pay.
I love her. She's so cute. She reminds me so much of my best friend. Super calm and composed, but tears waiting to break through. Vulnerable for a minute. Then immediately back to explaining and collected. Her job pay, responsibilities AND being a single parent must be really hard. And she has still cried like 900% less than the last girl

I had 2 senior dogs and a puppy. Puppy (who is now 1.5) has pet insurance because of the 2 senior dogs. She's already had a covered surgery that has payed for our pet insurance for the next 7 years if it never covers anything else. On top of that I had to put one of my senior dogs down last week because we had to weigh the financial risk of spending a few thousand dollars on something that may not have worked and ultimately it just didn't make sense with his age and other health issue and he was struggling to breathe without getting the expensive treatment. THAT alone is enough reason for me to always have pet insurance. For only like $25 a month I wouldn't be crying while i write this wondering if the expensive treatment would have worked and he'd still be here.

Caleb there are a lot of free legal resources for consumer debt (including civil actions for unpaid rent) I currently work for an organization that gives free legal aid and representation at court dates for consumer debt cases. Having worked with clients in similar situations, there are legal defenses that can be used to help her case. A lot of these free resources work in conjunction with a law school but are still overseen by practicing attorneys
@@KylieeeP Hi the organization is free because there is a community need for legal representation in consumer debt case. The average debt per household in the US is over 100k. Legal defenses was not in reference to the condition of the apartment but rather technicalities involving how the lawsuit was brought about. Personal jurisdiction, process of service, and statue of frauds are just a few that may be able to get the suit dismissed under several civil procedure statues. I hope this explanation helps!

Daphne and anyone else out there. When you said that you checked in to getting an attorney and they said wouldn't be able to do it until x date. Please keep in mind for the future that you have the right to legal counsel, and you can always write the court and file a request for a later court date due to your attorney not being available until y date.
In most states a defendant in a civil trial is not guaranteed a lawyer. If you can't find one or afford one, then you go without legal representation. You are only guaranteed an attorney in a criminal trial.
Way to necro an old comment. If I remember the context of this correctly the issue was booking an attorney in time for court. If you are trying to get representation and you cannot by a court date most judges will give you a continuation until you can book an attorney if you ask for one, even in a civil case.

Im still early in the video but I’m so happy she seems like a person with normal housing issues and isn’t talking in crazy circles about how she got fed up and did the only thing she felt she could do to send a message. Sometimes it’s the correct legal action to take when your landlord is neglectful.
1) ALWAYS get a written acknowledgment of receipt of keys on behalf of the landlord. 2) Colorado does have a tenants’ rights advocacy. 3) a Stipulation is an agreement by both parties as to the statements of facts…it’s not a judgement. 3) petition the court for a copy of any Judgment that was signed by the judge. 4) if you don’t sit on this, you should be able to get this cleared up quickly, if what you state here is accurate. 5) if you decide not to pay rent because the landlord is in violation of any ordinances, you need to put the withheld rent payments in an escrow account. Then the judge will see that you are not just looking for an excuse to not pay rent.

Lawyer here. I don’t practice in Colorado, but the judge’s office cannot give you legal advice and cannot have ex parte communications. You can file a motion in court, but must give the other side the opportunity to respond. I haven’t finished watching this episode, but a stipulated judgment means she agreed to a judgment. It’s basically a contract that has the force of a judgment (so the other side could collect/enforce as if it had a judgment). Just general note never to sign anything like that without reading and understanding it.
I'm definitely not a lawyer, but isn't a stipulated judgement a conditional judgement? I'd assume something like that would be that she's out of the remainder of the lease early on the condition that she pays the back rent.
Not necessarily. A stipulated judgment just means the parties have agreed to the judgment. It may or may not be conditional depending on the terms of the stipulation.
@@JennyH-io8ti Gotcha, so the "stipulated" part has nothing to do with the contents of the judgement, its just denoting that both parties agreed to the outlined contract as opposed to it being a ruling passed by the court devoid of both/either party's input; if I'm understanding correctly.

In florida I had to leave a complex because they didn't take black mold and roach infestation seriously. Which for an asthmatic are double whammies. Not only the upstairs neighbor confirmed conditions of their unrepaired leaks that trickled down to my unit, but also a beautiful black moldy wall and slime behind our fridge. Left without paying the lease breaking fee. Never regretted it.
Wow, I'm about halfway through this video, you actually got through to this one. Give yourself some credit for knowing when to step back and say you were going a little too hard. I imagine it can get hard to stay human when analyzing some of these situations.

As someone who has worked in the apartment industry there is a lot unknown about the situation below her. Unfortunately there are states that make it almost impossible to evict someone for behavioral issues vs rent issues. I'm not saying the complex did everything right, just showing and unfortunate side of the business.
It’s especially rough in Texas. The law very clearly favors the landlord. I had a similar situation and had to basically beg, plead, cry, constantly call them, to get out of the lease. The apartment was roach infested with drug addicts all around/in the property. I was a 23 year old living in a new state away from all friends and family. Some of the hardest months of my life 😢
You get what you pay for. If you living in the cheapest area your neighbors are trash and you got to get used to it or get a roommate in a nicer area or a better job. This is reality
Guest is from Denver. Bad neighbor could be dealing drugs and dealers can get lawyers to delay evictions for months even years. I bet the criminals do not clean after themselves leading to rodents. Meanwhile good neighbors have to live next to them. Glad she moved out.
britney@@ kinda seems like your blaming your landlord for your mistakes here. the landlord doesn't want to have roaches in their building or violent tenants. They need to take responsibility for their apartment and you need to take responsibility for your negligence.
For beginners, it's important to recognize that this scenario is overly simplified. Firstly, obtaining a mortgage for an investment property typically requires a minimum down payment of 25%. Secondly, while it's relatively easy to find comparable house purchase prices, understanding rental price comps requires extensive research. The challenge lies in identifying areas where renting is more expensive than buying, although such opportunities are less common due to this very dynamic. Thirdly, it's crucial to remember that the rental figure mentioned should represent net income, not gross. Therefore, one must consider expenses such as taxes, insurance, maintenance, and vacancy when evaluating investments. Despite these complexities, real estate investment remains a valuable tool for accumulating wealth, albeit not without its risks.
Very soon, affordable housing will no longer be affordable. So anything anyone want to do, I will advise they do it now because the prices today will look like dips tomorrow. Until the Fed clamps down even further, I think we're going to see hysteria due to rampant inflation. You can't halfway rip the band-aid off.
Home prices will come down eventually, but for now; get your money (as much as you can) out of the housing market and get into the financial markets or gold. The new mortgage rates are crazy, add to that the recession and the fact that mortgage guidelines are getting more difficult. Home prices will need to fall by a minimum of 40% (more like 50%) before the market normalizes. If you are in cross roads or need sincere advise on the best moves to take now its best you seek an independent advisor who knows about the financial markets.

Lol, exactly. And people just use that as an excuse to spend the money elsewhere and get fucked over. No sympathy for them.
Yes but you must go through legal steps to get a court approval to use an escrow account. You cannot just pay rent into escrow without approval to do so.
Yeah, if the AC is broken and they are slow to repair it, you can have it repaired yourself and deduct that cost from rent.
@@penitent2401 no you can’t no landlord has the ac as part of the contract and all appliances are as is. Unless you live ina very hot area where ac is required by law you are not correct. Most contracts require no ac or appliances and they are convenience only due to tenant not taking care of it and using it to withhold rent.
@@Marie99999990that is horrific 😭😭 I would be so appalled.
Most parents can be trusted to not screw over their kids. Not stealing from your kids is a super low bar.
Cop here; if you have a tenant selling drugs in a building to the point that theres shootings AND the super refuses to evict them, the super is probably on drugs too
Or they want them there to force ppl out early to jack the rent up.

@@truebengalsfan The first thing to improve is to realize your faults. And Afro-americans were faulted seriously. They were targeted specifically and the least white people can do is pay them in arrears like they deserve. Look around you rn. None of this would have existed without them. Smart-phones, microwaves, flight, cars, modern medicine. All of these things are taken for granted yet none of the actually credit was properly given. Just look at poverty and crime stats. Afro-americans make up most of them because the environment they grow up in forces them to. Imagine being forced to be immoral after you have provided the world with so many technologies and art. Sometimes I look at my afro-american friends and ponder how they make it through the day knowing how much strife and struggle they have gone through, yet getting nothing but discrimination in a derogatory sense. Funnily enough, only they are strong enough to endure it. They are so resilient that even though they have given so much to the world, and been beaten down, for no reason, they still stand back up and HELP THE WORLD EVEN MORE! When my husband and I were discussing our plan to tackle our debt these past 2 days, we kept saying “Well Caleb said to…” lol Caleb you are part of our little fam. Keep up the great videos. 🤗
awwwww
Bwahaha
Caleb if I may suggest: Your "Hammer Financial Score" should include a metric that grades the Income - Needs ratio. Daphne has 50% of her income available to her to tackle her debt or build wealth. That makes her real financial situation infinitely better than what many other guests have. But her Hammer score is just as bad as the others.
Good idea. Essentially this is like a "financial potential" / "possible outlook" metric.
or could score for how long the Bai out plan takes and how old they are ie- retirement v walmart deadline
We never lived in California, never had income there & also had a federal return filed long before our appointment with the accountant to file our federal & Michigan returns. You can't just not pay rent. You have to pay into a side account and regularly notify them in writing of each and every problem, including police reports and use that in court to not pay rent. Doing it her way means she still has to pay.

The best pet insurance is no pets!
Instead if buying insurance. Take that $ youd be spending on a premium and put it ina savings account for a pet fund.
If they weren't making a ton of money off pet owners, pet insurance wouldn't exist. Most people aren't coming out ahead.

@@KylieeeP Hi the organization is free because there is a community need for legal representation in consumer debt case. The average debt per household in the US is over 100k.
If you are trying to get representation and you cannot by a court date most judges will give you a continuation until you can book an attorney if you ask for one,

I empathize with this girl. I had a similar crap apt complex that I lived in. They went through 3 different new management companies while I was there for only 1 year. When they switched they killed the website, phone lines, email, etc. With no way of contacting them with any issues you had. It was winter and our heat was out for over a month. And they get away with it.
Ugh for real it's so infuritating, the last apartment I was in had a german roach problem and my AC was out for 4 months
Pay your rent. The average person doesn’t like their apartment! No excuse !
I don’t. She is full of excuses, chose to be a single mother, chose to live where she is, chose to not pay rent, even has a dog with no money. She’s a typical woman looking for a handout. She deserves everything coming
@@Intellectualchaosdepends. Sometimes depending on what not working, eg heating, water, if the house/apartment is not liveable you should contact a lawyer before you make the decision to withhold rent.
I gave a 60 days notice to move out and also gave them my keys when I moved out. Months later I get a call from a collection agency saying that I owe a whole lot of money! I called that old apartment and they said I didn't give a 60 day notice. I immediately left work, found my receipt from that 60 day notice, and took it straight to their office! They were like "oh, well you also didn't turn in your keys." TF I didn't! I got them to drop those charges against me. But take this as a lesson that these apartments will lie and try to pull one over on you, so always keep receipts!
But let's be real... she has no intention of paying.
Or she could have threw a few bucks into the AC and moved on with her life instead of being a professional victim
@@Rocket9944do you have any idea how much AC repairs costs? My AC was repaired this summer, not replaced, and it was $4k. Replacement was quoted at $10k. And that was in CO. Obviously not an option for anyone under 25.

Was her apartment that had the rodents in Texas or Colorado?
I started 2022 with 230k debt, with PSLF (I was paying $1440 a month for years, and did 27 years working for social services) and paying chunks on my bills I’m now down too 35k…
I love watching financial audits. It keeps me aware of my own finances and has allowed me to reach massive goals that I’ve set for myself.
Court employee here - she needs a copy of the stipulated judgment and the minute order of the hearing she attended
Can we get an update on her? One of the best guests!❤
She was iffy at first but I wish her allllll the best! Held her responsible and she ended up taking some accountability and will hopefully get out of this mess soon for her and her child’s sake :) so refreshing
In the last six months I paid off $125 in personal debt, $600+ in a title loan, and $500 in legal fees. I'm now saving up to settle a debt that's gone to collection and am on top of all my monthly payments otherwise. It's slow but good progress, and Caleb is the one who inspired me to do it!

Awwwwww. She's has the biggest heart.
But truly girl... WORRY ABOUT URSELF FIRST.❤
It's wild to me how legally illiterate someone who is a teacher can be. She really doesn't know what's going on around her.
If you got rats in the wall, trap house in the building, shooting, police frequently coming, and management unresponsive. It’s low income. All the low income residents I have come across has had one or two or all of the same issues.
Or it's just Colorado.
right. that is not a normal thing lmao.
No. Low income has to do with rent charged not the quality of housing. It's indicative of a slum lord. However rent charged could have been market rates.
@mr.anthropology3277 no I've lived in Colorado 21/27 years of my life never experienced this. My friends still live in Denver and don't experience this one lives in Denver and one lives outside Denver. She likely lived in a high crime area which is generally low income.
@@meganmarie4289 I live in Colorado and this is just how it is where there is no housing options. If you have money to buy a house you can avoid this but if you rent most places don't care anymore whether they have to make it livable or not. We had a landlord that refused to fix a mice problem and then also took four months to fix our heat in the middle of winter.
mans timestamped the ad, absolute king
Love the white t-shirt with black flowers that you're wearing on the Rocket card add, Caleb!!
Caleb is the millennial version of Dave Ramsey.
Bless you, man! You're really helping people out here. Financial literacy is really important!
Love the PbatesLTD content. I think this project is just as essential as HBAR and they both will be great movers
She needs to apply for the SAVE income based student loan repayment plan bc her payments will likely be zero and the interest will be waived so the balance will not increase for as long as she continues to qualify.
seems like the apartment complex was trying to set up a claim that she violated the court order by not being out in time and bill her anyway, whereas hopefully she was out in time with proof. I'm not sure if it's wise to contact the court without representation, I don't know.
I really like the split screen in this. Would love to see more split screen stuff to see real-time reactions
This poor girl seems like she has the best of hearts! Best of luck to her and she’s taking the right step asking for help. Good for her!
I’m a dividend investor, My husband and I have invested in the S&P500, both through my TSP with the government, and through fidelity in her 401-k. Cashed out 270k from the S&P and invested with a Financial adviser, Monica Mary Strigle and we also bought few properties at the right time. Until around 3 years ago we were 100% in the s&p after over 30 years. I’m retiring at the end of this month at 62, while my wife will retire next year at 60. We currently have 3.7 million in our tax deferred savings. I am putting this out there for anyone looking for how to help themselves in this time of crisis.
These bots are getting advanced
You have a husband AND a wife. Impressive!
@Mama2CDHsurvivor i know right
YES the bots are learning!
This doesn’t help
Every morning I take my after workout poop and do my social media management work while watching Caleb in the background, it has become my morning ritual
💩
13:50 she needs to see a tenants rights lawyer in Colorado about the apartment issue. They might be able to do something for protecting about getting sued for rent and getting the deposit back.
She needs to have a record of all her emails and non responses from the apt complex. She also should hold onto the videos/pictures from the issues in her apt
