I’ve been listening to music for decades and I thought nothing would ever surprise me again, but I was so wrong. Finding Julian was one of the happiest accidents of my life.
For those who maybe cannot understand the meaning of THE EGG INSIDE THE GLASS at the end of video, it's something very common in latin American countries it is an old ritual which is used to figure out what kind of illnesses a person has by rubbing a not broken egg over the whole body from the head to the feet and after that the priest breaks the egg and places it on plate then asks his or her patient to put a hand there and mix the yolk and the white part of it after that puts the mixture into a glass and according of the signs, the shapes, the bubbles the priest can check what kind of illnesses does his patient have or what will happen in his future it's something extremely common on people who lives in the mountains.
This video is gorgeous. This track was already a standout on Tyranny. But this video is cut and transitions so goddamn well. The cut from the bull fighter to the dancing, mad good.
Jim D man I was going to say exactly this haha. The most cool is that this video was made upon a hole movie and they simply managed to translated all the feelings from the sound to the exactly image!!

So, the images displayed are old and seem distant from our moment in time, but are they? I'm spanish and I wish I could say that traditions involving religious fanatism and bullfighting belong to the past, but they don't. And it's just not only in my country (well, except for the bullfighting part), but we still see religious fanatism, violence over animals, and violence over men lended by men all around the world. However , just like in the movie, we still see people dancing with each other and singing and loving each other. And I guess everybody knows which way to go and which side to pick. Ps: the song is great and fits with the video in a weird and *unexpected* way.
unpopular opinion here but i'd rather have another voidz record at this point over a new strokes record. the stuff JC does with the voidz has such weight to it. it feels very important on an artistic and cultural level. its actually adding something fresh to the conversation. any of us that have been following the strokes career closely know that theyre really only still doing it to keep us happy. im not saying the next strokes record wont be great, because im sure it will. but i just think it feels like theyre obligated at this point and that really saps most of the excitement out of it for me. they do 3 or 4 big festival gigs a year to keep their bills paid, vaguely hint at recording sessions to keep us hopeful, but i really think their hearts arent in it anymore. hopefully this year or next theyll really step it up and prove me wrong. PS- the strokes have been one of my all time favorite bands since 2002 so please understand that my criticism comes from a place of love.
i didnt mean to imply that i dont want them to do more records, but comedown machine felt really half-hearted which i really dont want to see with the next one.
Right now I believe that Tyranny is the best album that has been released this decade. However, I think that this has to due with the evolution as an artist of JC and, if you think about it, he has brought this political and experimental attitude to The Strokes's Future Present Past EP as well. Therefore, I partially agree with you when you say that The Voidz seems to be doing music more meaningful than The Strokes' right now, but we are still to see or hear much of the music that is to be made from both bands. Anyway, I absolutely love JC + The Voidz and it has changed my perspective on life in many ways, hope to watch them live someday....
Be it with The Strokes, or be it the super apocalyptic band of these fresh fucking punks; Julian knows exactly what the human condition requires to feel itself beyond its mortal frames and immoral functions! I for myself now avow every ounce of air that fills my lungs to this trait! And as for this Tyranny, these fires have been existent for as long as I could remember living. Solace, as for now, is only in the full scale resurrection of this nerve igniting upheaval!
I admit, I cried, especially because of the pointless animal cruelty and how we justify it with entertainment. Just after that at 5:28 there is a couple dancing and the music slows... Love the intensity on their faces, like they are really living. Really beautiful video. Also liked how at one point there were people flogging themselves and it coincided with the lyrics "oh man, what are they doing now?!" 😂
I saw this live, I'm star struck just reading these lyrics now. I made my own interpretation of the song and always liked it, but I now see how powerful the lyrics are and it makes me sad how late I am to this masterpiece video.
My favorite song on this album is Dare I Care, but the feeling this song brings about within me is much more powerful than the others. I imagine a concrete jungle, people, everywhere is graffiti on walls. But not actual graffiti, just zig zag lines over the red clay bricks with occasional word or two. I can smell the smoke, the dirt being kicked up from the ground, people moving, crowds, lines, and protests. Then, halfway through the song there is that part where he repeats "qualia" over and over and the mobs of human life being to fall and scream. Plague takes them all, the scene is in slow mo, with some people getting sudden violent spazzing and others covered on odd bumps. They all slowly die, nothing to stop them, I feel the disgust of the scene within me. As if I should avert my eyes or hold my nose. The "Father Electricity" is the one who created it all, who set human life apart from all other. This song makes me not like what "Father Electricity' has done.
Truly mesmerizing! The video is unbelievable, and goes together with the song perfectly every step of the way! Great job to everyone who worked on this.
