Zelensky's comment about Bahkmut shows a serious misunderstanding of the situation. Bahkmut was a defensive anchor in the middle of a strong defensive line. Ukrainian troops in Bahkmut had extensive fortifications and infrastructure as well as extensive support by artillery and drones. Pokrovsk has none of that. There is nothing to stop the Russians from simply going around the city and cutting it off.

He has not spent 5 minutes in the actual military (no matter how many camouflage shirts and pants he has in his wardrobe), and yet he is deciding on the overall strategy in the most intense war since WW2!
A lot of people blame a certain painter for absolutely asinine strategic decisions during WW2, but at least that painter served as an infantryman in WW1. Zelensky can not even say that.

      Western media be like-
CNN: Russian propagandists claim that Putin’s war machine has captured settlements of little strategic value. We asked the President Zelensky for comment and here is what he had to say. (Cut to Zelensky wiping suspicious white powder from upper lip). “Ehrrrrm, *sniff* *sniff*, we are winning big and are take Moscow in big offensive. Give more coca, erm, money and weapon.”
Fox News: The former USSR, aided by CoMMuNiST China, is currently attacking American democracy and freedom by taking Ukrainian land which has minerals in it. This is the fault of liberals. To combat this threat of Russian and Chinese communist aggression, the United States needs to conduct preemptive strikes on Iran and bring freedom and democracy to the Iranian people. This is why we need President Trump in office.
BBC: It is a bright and sunny day in Kyiv. Volodymr Zelensky stands at 5’10”, a powerful figure donning the green camouflage of his superior army. We ask him what it feels like to carry the burden of the whole of Europe on his shoulders, and he replies coyly, “Give me more money and we get job done.” After the tyrant Putin’s armies have retreated Westward to Pokrovsk and Toretsk, we can’t help but feel that Putin’s days are numbered as he continues to lose his illegal war.
MSNBC: Here are the women and transwomen leading the fight against toxic masculinity on the battlefront. (Shows Ukrainian women in make up and pristine uniforms playing soldier in some safe zone. ) We now interview Major Olga Petrova, a former housewife, who has now become a strong and independent woman leading the fight against the patriarchy, literally. Watch out, Vladimir Putin. Your unprovoked invasion won’t go unanswered. These Ukrainian lionesses are ready to bite, and with the help of First female President of the United States Kamala Harris, they will destroy not only Putin’s Russia, but all toxic men who vote Republican. The future is female and Democrat.
Task & Purpose: Bro, America number one bro, we beat everybody, Russians are like so lucky they are not fighting America bro, like yeah, like American superior technology can easily defeat Chinese temu army and Russian shovels, bro. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
Denys: The glorious and independent country of Ukraine is winning. The Orcs are being destroyed on every front. We are pushing them back with our superior tactics and motivation. Today, one Abrams destroyed 50,000 Russian coffins and the brave glorious Ukrainian patriotic armed forces are now storming Red Square in Moscow. We are winning! WE ARE WINNING. 🇺🇦 🇺🇦 🇺🇦 🇺🇦 🇺🇦 🇺🇦 🇺🇦

To anyone that knows basic math this war was over from 2022 unless NATO did a full mobilisation right at the start. Even that probably wouldn't have ended this, with the mass artillery, TOS, Airstrikes and mines Russia deployed. If you look at last years defensive lines, frankly, I'm sure the Russians expected more and it never came. Basically nothing made it through the grey zone with maybe 2 exceptions.

That's true. They have great reputation; they dish out their commentary videos daily highlighting political and strategic implications, and they have extensive contacts with all sorts of experts and access to information sources.
If I remember correctly, one of them Alexander Mercouris revealed (in an interview on Daniel Davis Deep Dive channel, who is an excellent military expert himself) that he had received information the Russian side knew that Ukrainians were planning an operation in Kursk and they allowed it to happen (by demining the border area, pulling back heavy troops & equipment and by deploying special forces instead because overall this was going to divert away from Donbas and bog down the most effective Ukrainian units and resources making it at the same time easier for the Russians to isolate them and to destroy them.
I tend to think this piece of information is correct although on the other hand initially, when the attack happened the Russian and Putin himself seemed to be upset and angry.
They also believe Ukrainians were aiming to capture a NPP - nuclear power plant in the Kursk region.

I watch Mercouris. His best assets are combing and discussing articles from say, Politico or the Economist or various personalities and reporters and reporting the political tea leaves, especially from a legal or international view.
I'd say that his military analysis and acceptance of Russian sources are the limiting factors on his reports. A bit too pro-Russia company line, especially when Russia has setbacks and well, comes across as a bit PR-y. Particularly in his analyzing Russian vs. Western kit. And I say this as a daily listener.
Willy is much better in this regard.
Me personally I think Willy and Reisner are near the top, then say a Philip Blood. Then maybe a Jacques Baud. Only then Mercouris and others, but his long-form examinations and dissecting of mainstream articles and interviews is definitely indispensible.

@@alexyoon-sungcucina7895 Yes, I agree. Jacques Baud and Daniel Davies belong to my favourites, Reisner happens only once in a while, and it's the first time I hear about Phillip Blood; I checked an interview with him and I would disagree with his notion it was necessary and existential for the west to support militarily Ukraine against Russia. Probably that was one of the greatest geostrategic mistakes of the west: overreaching and provoking Russia to confrontation. There are many reasons that it was not a good idea.

Kursk is something a politician comes up with, not a general who want to win a war. Taking empty land only work if both sides are equal and are willing to negotiate for a land swap at the end of the war. Not when one side is clearly losing on the military front. The former advisor to the former Ukrainian President Zelensky, Alexey Arestovichb expects two Russian operations to envelope the Ukrainian troops on the frontline. Today there is not a single plant that has not been attacked by the Russian military. Due to these attacks, Ukrainian hydroelectric power plants have lost over 40% of their power generation capacity, while thermal power plants have suffered losses exceeding 80%. The Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant has been completely lost, the Dnipro HPP has sustained significant damage, and other hydroelectric plants are in the process of recovery (will take several years). Ukraine task is to recover as much as possible before the fall-winter period, but it is a challenging task today because of the constant missile strikes, which occur at least every week or month. A problem with the logic is that they strike places way away from the line of contact, that will not cause an impact on the front, the longer a missile is airborne the more likely it is going to be intercepted, and finally by western accounts the Russians have approx 650,000 within occupied territory, that it greater then the 455,000 USA active duty force. Long story short the Russian logistics are already in place, within Ukrainian striking distance. They are just looking for softer targets elsewhere, which seems likely the Russian electrical warfare is working better than they are reporting.

I don’t know about this specifically but no doubt they were doing a decent amount of killing civilians. Some even caught on video. Ukraine gov officials have always been incredibly paranoid of spies, not without reason, and are quick to execute someone rather than arrest and investigate. Their intelligence service (SBU) even executed a Ukrainian official who was sent to negotiate on the country’s behalf in Istanbul. They left his dead body to be found on the street in Kiev. The SBU admitted to this execution and said they suspected he was compromised. Of course the right course of action is never extrajudicial killings but we’re talking about Ukraine….Even the u.s. state dept website has all kinds of reports about the lack of human rights and extrajudicial killings in the country.

I can’t find the words to describe how much Zelensky disgusts me for selling out his country and people to be destroyed for nothing. Ukraine would’ve lost no land or lives had they only negotiated peace with their neighbor but chose to instead fight for land they otherwise wouldn’t lose. Ukraine’s negotiating position has vastly deteriorated since before the war, shortly after it started (Istanbul deal), or even post kharviv offensive. It’s wholly irrational. Why Willy plays along with this nonsense is beyond me but my guess is that he has no understanding of the conflict going back 10 years, making him ignorantly lean pro-Ukraine, but he also seems to think he’s being impartial by not saying the obvious.

Ukraine still has a large build up of troops that they can send across the border at any time, to help with the offensive - but my gut tells me that the only time they would have made enough of a difference is in the first week of the offensive, back when the Russians were scrambling to contain the situation.
Now the Russians are in place, and there is a good chance that those troops in reserve are just going to be trickled in to replace causalities. Either that, or they get held in place along the Belarussian border, due to the troop deployment we have seen along there.

Going into Kursk was a simple strategy:
    1. For NATO to cover-up it's imminent humiliation on the Eastern frontline.

Keep huffing copium. The Ukrainians are not withdrawing from Pakrovsk as part of some Clausewitzian gambit. Their defense is collapsing because they have redirected logistical support and the most experienced units to the Kursk adventure (which is a major blunder on Ukraine's part). West of Pakrovsk, there is very little in the way of defensible ground "of their choosing". The more fortified areas ARE in the Pakrovsk areas! When Ukraine finally pulls back from the Kursk adventure (and the certainly will, or they will be pushed out), they will need to reconstitute a defense west of Pakrovsk. They don't have the time, manpower, or resources for this. Plus, by that point they will be fighting with their back to the Dnipier, with Russian aviation able to take out their escape across the river. Clausewitz would spin in his grave if he saw what Ukraine was doing. Ypu clearly do not understand Clausewitz, Sun Tzu, or Corbett.

I think Ukraine took a gamble in Kursk which didn't pay off, and now they're doubling down for the sake of PR. They thought they'd be in Kursk city by now.
They wanted speeds similar to their Kharkov offensive in 2022. What happened then, as you know, is that Ukrainian special forces would quickly advance in the rear, and Russians would retreat for fear of encirclement. The trouble is, Russians learned. Now, many frontline units stayed put, despite news from their rear, hoping for reinforcements. Many were eventually relieved, many retreated by breaking their encirclement, but days later, having cost the Ukrainians a ton of time and material. Very few Russians stayed encircled, like the unfortunate few at the Women's Prison.
Point being: there was no panic, and without panic, the Ukrainians were stopped near the border

Hi Matt, your Ukraine focussed commentary is getting tedious. it is fine when it is balanced but not twice a day every day mate. your map shows what Russia has achieved in the last twenty four hours and compares that to what Ukraine has achied in the last 10 days... or in the case of Kursk in the last month. You never go into any details about negative effects for Ukraine in any detail... what about russian comments that they are taking masses of prisoners most of whom are conscripts and that their average age is 55 yo. What about the fact that many of them were conscripted with medical exemptions in their pockets. No in depth look at the collapse in Donbas because troops do not want to fight and that the ones who do do not live through the day. What about the failed push towards KNPP which then changed to now a push on the gas pipeline. The Ukrainian motives change daily (almost) as fast as their strategies fail. In a few days the Russians will have nothing between them and the Dnipro river except fleeing vehicles running out of fuel. Nato is now sending ordinary utes to Ukraine because they have run out of armoured vehicles. Geeze mate try and become relevent instead of attempting to focus on any hope or dream you wish for your mates... it's nice you want to wish your mates success but there is none of any value... Ukrainian success is all ephemeral and of little strategic value. Zelenskyy is willingly killing off every Ukrainian male in order to keep the war going until the USA elections. Nato have even sent troops onto Russian soil (an undeclared war) against the most major nuclear power... what sort of idiocy is this... many of the troops in Kursk speak english with American accents and they are getting their asses handed to them all because Zelenskiyy owes USA big time and he knows he and his nazstie cohort will all die as soon as Russia wins so it is a keep fighting so the Biden cohort do not lose and end up in prison and so that the nazsties can stay alive as long as possible. Face up to it "Willie", this is the most dishonourable war ever fought in modern times... probably ever and there is no honour in being part of it. I pity every Ukrainian conscript and every Russian soldier for having to endure it. Fucking scum the bastards who brought this into existence.
