This week, host Sumedha Mittal is joined by independent journalist Angad Singh.
Formerly with Vice News, Angad was “blacklisted” by the Indian government over a documentary called India Burning, which he worked on as a production assistant. He talks about dealing with court cases after being accused by the central government of portraying India in a “negative” light. He says his OCI card was taken anyway and talks about the sorrow of not being able to return to India anymore.

Nations don't improve until it's faults and shortcomings are pointed out. You did your job Angad, based on what everyone saw, I mean it's not something a sensible person can deny. Lastly, India belongs to everyone, who believe it's where they belong, even those born overseas. A piece of paper cannot decide that. It's your country too.

I am an Indian Christian living in Europe for the past 9 years. I am a critic of Modi and his religious bigotry. However, I have noted that in the West India is presented in a very bad way. Nothing positive is presented about our country. People here think that India is like a sub-saharan country with only poverty and violence. So, I have no sympathy for journalists, especially the Western journalists. They are as bad as Arnab Goswami.

They should also highlight positives but what are they exactly right now if we start looking. Richer becomes more richer and the 1k crore wedding, maybe. There can only be smoke if there is fire. What else, please add. Now a party worker will add Ram mandir, vishwaguru ka danka, 5 trillion economy, majoritism, 80 crore free rations, swatch bharat, vande bharat, pradhan mantri yojna1, yojna 2, yojna 3 etc etc etc.
If you live in India as a poor person you may indeed know the truth .
I mean the journalism maybe biased, cause bias exists in all of us.
But if it is factual, and based on truth they shouldn't be penalized.
And also it'd their prerogative on what to show about India.
As a person, it's my job to look out for more varied sources of journalism.

I am a citizen of India, I should be able to point out all the shortcomings of this country.
To solve any problem, the first step is to acknowledge that there is a problem.
If a person is saying that there is a problem and it is backed by facts then you can't turn around and say "If it is so bad, leave".
Why should that person leave?
He has family in India. What other explanation do you need? Ask this question to your IIT/IIM friends who seek jobs in US, or your fellow villagers who are trying to get into US illegally. Why are they running away from India?

oci status revoked is bad but no to votes. The people who left India first were the privileged people who converted caste power to economic wealth and it has lead to overseas Indian diaspora to become very conservative and we see how much support mudi gets outside.

Yes, I would appreciate criticism but problem with foreign or oci holder journalists is . They tend to serve foreign govt so much that they rarely put anything positive about india. Even they put a positive news it will have tinge of negativity or scepticism added to it.
Example: 2012 uk journalist made a documentary abt nirbhaya case. In the end, she added some statistics which showed that rape rate in western countries are worse than that of India. That way her report could have relevant to west as well. But bbc cut that portion and made documentary entirely a india bashing piece.
So sorry angad that you feel victimized but I don't know your work.
But we indians are fed up of this hypocrisy.
That's what media's first responsibility is. It is media's fundamental duty to ask questions and show what governments, corporations or any other entity which holds power, doesn't want people to know.
If one shows entirely negative side then another can show entirely positive. As long as anyone of them is not lying it should be accepted.

I understand your point of view but if a report is factual then it shouldn't matter if it's critical or not.
It is not the job of the journalists or the media houses to play both sides.
Their job is to report, albiet with some bias.

Indian constitution does not allow absolute right of freedom of speech. The state can take action if it thinks that any speech will undermine sovereignty, integrity of India, or may disturb communal harmony.
Unfortunately, state also blatantly uses this to undermine dissent and anything "anti-government". Wonder why this is not used against persons who are openly spreading hate from political rallies and campaign speeches. Where does this action goes then?
Nothing is absolute but this goberment is abusing the necessary restrictions in constitution.

You are right! Media shouldn't be allowed to give any opposing views of party. When entire section of media is dedicated to running the above issues 24x7 and where party line is paramount, absolutely the other media should also just cover the party issues. This is a developed India we are talking about, where any opposing views will require 'whataboutery'. Totally agree, any issues have to be either forwarded by incumbent gov or nothing. As citizens, we can't tolerate issues which against those in power. Yes, our country will move forward like this😂
