  • In this video, we are talking about our recent trip to Ghana the Northern Region. We visited Tamale, Ghana and we are here to report on the experience! We let you in on what it was like to travel by plane from Accra and the protocol at the Airport (and the fact that we were on a historic flight)! We take you inside an African market, through the streets of Tamale, and inside a new hotel with their rooftop pool! We also hit the cultural center, see Kente cloth being made, and ride on the iconic yellow-yellow. What are you waiting for? After this video you’ll want to book your trip to Tamale!
Oh! And we also talk about the cost of living in Tamale and the fact that you will want to add this spot to your list of possible West African cities to relocate to. Let’s get this video started!
👉🏽 Follow our black family blog channel as we relocate from Texas to Ghana in 2020. We go beyond the return and talk about what it's like as a black family living abroad. We’ll share with you all the ins and outs of expat life with weekly check ins and monthly live events. Join this diaspora vlog and hear about Ghana living and moving overseas with your family by subscribing now. Then comment below- what do you want to know about us or about living in Ghana?

i love tamale, i have a friend at their military barrack called kamina. fermale crews wow that say alot how ghana is going.did yall eat guinea folw? Tamale they speak a local dialect call Dagomba, I like their fabrics and is cheap compared to Accra. Every region has its own type of kente, go to Volta they also have their kente.

Tamale is a completely different world from Accra. You see the difference as soon as you land at the Tamale airport. The topography is different, the layout is different, the culture is different and the buildings are different. They live a very simple life out there where the natives are satisfied with having just the bear minimals in life. Unfortunately, the poverty level at the north is higher compared to the middle and southern parts of Ghana. Nonetheless, its a beautiful place with a very rich culture and history. Glad you got to experience that.

Hi Tony and Ayo. Occasionally I comment on expat videos just to provide some education, The reason why women in Ghana, especially in the rural areas do not want men in the kitchen is because they usually wear traditional cloth and may be unaware that they are exposed while cooking because they sit on low stools and don’t stand to cook as in the USA. Also, men are traditionally warriors who must endure pain, including pain from the pangs of hunger. Such a man must endure hunger until the food is ready. A man who is continuously visiting the kitchen to check on the food is considered effeminate and cowardly and is frowned upon. When I was young, my mom will always say to me in Ewe: “Nutsu mekpoa dzota o” Meaning: A Man Does Not Visit the Kitchen to check on the cooking!

Different regions are occupied by different tribes and we do all look very different . In Nigeria the three major tribes Igbos, Hausas and Yoruba's all look very different. The languages are different . The religions are different. The food is different , The traditional clothes are different even the way they build traditional huts is different .I am Nigerian Igbo and when I visited Kano the biggest city in Northern Nigeria I felt like I was in a foreign country!. The capital Abuja and Lagos tend to be a mix of all the different tribes and that's why we all speak English!

I know am a year late but it's harmattan. That comes right after the raining season, then after comes the actual dry season. Yes there r more Muslims here and sometimes they can be up in your dressing business. Depending on where u live n where u r going, they turn to leave u alone.
Over here Christians sometimes buy sugar or other stuff for Muslims when it's fasting periods. The mud Houses use to plastered with cow dung and the gender roles is mostly due to tradition. Unlike the akans, we r a patrilineal society.
Oh and things are way more slow when u go to the upper East, just that it's predominantly Christian. Few sites in the upper east would be the crocodile pond, slave camp, Tongo hills n shrines ( don't worry we don't kidnap 😉 ). How straw baskets, hats, smoke and shea butter is made. Settlement in the upper east is different and it's a few degrees hotter there too.

Next time you go, go a little further north near the Burkina Faso-Ghana border and visit the Paga Crocodile Pond. This is a just a tourist rip-off attraction but at least you get the chance to feed a live chicken to a crocodile and get to pull a live (but tame) croc by the tail. Make sure you get to Mole but on the way take in the mosque at nearby Larabanga, reputedly the oldest mosque in Ghana (and maybe West Africa) and get your pictures taken by the "magic rock" along the way. Look up the "magic rock" on the Internet for the full story. Lots of great elephants at Mole (didn't see any other wildlife).

The Harmattan is a season in West Africa that occurs between the end of November and the middle of March. It is characterized by the dry and dusty northeasterly trade wind, of the same name, which blows from the Sahara over West Africa into the Gulf of Guinea. You fold may not know it but the harmattan wind occurs all over West Africa, including northern Nigeria, bringing in red dust from the Sahara.

Kente is woven on a horizontal strip loom, which produces a narrow band of cloth about four inches wide. Several of these strips are carefully arranged and hand-sewn together to create a cloth of the desired size. If you want a photo of real kente weavers, I can provide you with one.

It's interesting that women can do the weaving in the North because in the South, it's mostly the men who weave the kente cloth, and it's frowned upon for women to weave...this is yet another great example of the cultural differences between the North and the South, which is pretty cool

Cost of living in the Northern region is so so cheap. Do you guys know that apart from Accra and it’s surroundings being expensive a bit depending on how people live and the area they live.
