  • I did actually successfully change one, but the other one was a pain and said no, so I paid a man to torture it. Sorry, remove it. They also did some other things, and she failed an MOT. The car in question is my 1999 Daewoo Matiz M100 SE.

It’s not about whether you are spending more than the car is worth, it’s about whether you like the car, and want to keep it. In the long run, it’s cheaper to fix things as you go along, than buying a brand new vehicle.

  • @davidthehillbilly7995
    @davidthehillbilly7995 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Don't know about your garage, but when I had a seized bolt like this, I fired up the cutting torch and ran it between the shock mount and the shock absorber until the bolt was no longer an issue. The first cut usually burnt off enough of the rubber bush that you could get the bolt out with minimal violence. Looking forward to watching progress on Chemmy....

It is funny how your Daewoo Matiz is moving along the same lines as my 1994 Volvo 480. When I bought the car in 2014 the brake lines and rear shock absorbers had just been replaced. Shortly after I've had the rear arches done, most suspension components replaced and had the rear axle (same construction as the Matiz!) completely sandblasted and rustproofed. All of course far beyond the economical value of the car but I am still enjoying those investments as the car is still with me.

    • @Isaki138

To be fair, none of that rear end corrosion (quiet at the back! 😂) looks bad and is well worth tackling as soon as possible before it gets structural. If you have the time and inclination, you "just" need to remove the rear beam, wire brush it, coat it in rust converter and then stone chip then jobs a good'un for years to come 👍

@@jamesportrais3946 I'm sorry you're just contradicting yourself. You're saying "no offence" and complimenting my skill then continuing to insult me?
Taking an axle off and renewing the rust protection is not an "underhand dealing"
You could go all out and get it powder coated, as a new rear beam would come. But the value of the car would not pay the cost of that back.
Rust converter and stone chip is better than nothing at all as it will slow down if not stop future corrosion for quite a while.
It's not a way to hide the rust. The procedure removes loose rust, de-oxidises & converts surface rust and stone chip protects the surface from the elements and stops the rust.
You're making me out to be some sort of crook for suggesting this. What is there to "screw up"?

I had to educate Mike in the comments and you will relate to what is special about the original 3-pot Matiz,
BTW, someone has included good advice here and it is practically certain that Myrtle's cat is still purring well. The idling problems are pretty well certainly related to the CO2 fail and you might have noticed lower mpg than her average over the years. If she is getting insufficient air and not completely combusting it can be worth trying to isolate differences between the cylinders.
My (rather untidy) 1999 Matiz had a similar problem and as the valves were okay the mechanic beefed up the ignition with new leads and high-end spark plugs. With the single coil being in a silly place under the 'drip shelf' we devised an overshoot guard from heatproof plastic.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, I had to tighten up the belt on Scotty's alternator. Normal to do little after a change of water pump etc. Simple job; just jack up and remove the rear wheel, remove a panel, loosen a flanged nut on a bracket, push alternator, and then tighten nut. It would be simple if there was anyway to get any ordinary spanner in the space on to the nut and then be able to lever it, and there's no room for sockets. I have a set of flexi ratchet spanners like the one you used on the shock bolt. But the only one I needed, 15 mm, has gone missing. Finally got it off using a flat spanner at an odd angle, but this damages the flats. So I replaced it a ordinary 17 mm nut, same thread, and a spring washer. I did have the fexi spanner for that.

One good thing about having multi vehicles is that when one breakdown, you've got other vehicles to drive. Are those new glasses? As a fellow spectical wearer you notice when someone has new specs. The lad could do with an haircut, or is he a mini Rocker?

Very dangerous way of doing it and I am only at 3:14. Jack the side up, put it very stable on axle stand, use the jack to jack the axle so that the spring is compressed and then you can gently lower it after having undone the bolts holding the absorber.
    Cheers!

With the wheel off the ground, there is no pressure on the shock absorber.

@@HubNut oh with my old Golf mk4 I still had to compress a bit.

That axle stand wasn’t doing a great deal, the garage would have got the hot wrench out on that shock or hit it with the impact - bit of a laundry list on that fail sheet - that’s just the old car life

Oh how I hate M.O.T tests, doesn't matter what the age of car is. Good luck sorting the old girl out Mr HubNut.

Shame there's about 500 miles between us. Would be fun to sort out those wee problems in good company. I have a great liking for renewing brake pipes with cunifer equivalents. Aye, I don't get out much.

Terraclean is a very good service to reduce emissions.

It will happen, but there are quite a few mechanical maladies I need to sort first.

Oh and at least you can hammer around left hand bends again until the other shock is on.

A few days ago I bought a 1980 U.S. Market/"N.A.D.A-Spec" Rover SD-1/3500/V8-Manual from the Original Owner for $750. Sold new in New Jersey and driven to western Texas(on the Texas/New Mexico Border..)a few months later. 41.780 miles from new last inspected in 1988 and stored since. Unlike the "Native UK Cars" this thing has zero rust anywhere...the idea of it being bought up by a Brit and shipped back to Blighty might be too much for it! A week after we did the deal, the Gentleman called me back and gave me a pair of U.S. Cortina's:-A '69 2-Door and a '70 Wagon. No rust on these either.

Hi Ian , can I ask are parts for the charade hard to find, I’ve had one in the past before they stopped selling cars in the uk and unlike yourself considered it one of my best purchases. I am now considering another but slightly considered as to the availability of parts.

I'd be interested to know who thinks the MOT has become more fair or less fair over the years. My experience is actually pretty good, but even so I can't help thinking that if this were the 1970s lots of cars I have scrapped would still be on the road. 🤫
