  • City Walks visits Zagreb, Croatia. Our first trip to Zagreb was for Advent Market but we didn't film a walk then. Returning in the summer reminded me how much I like this City. On this walk we start at the cathedral and make our way over to Gradec, down to Trg Ban Jelicic, along the parks to the train station. Zagreb is a beautiful, vibrant, artistic city with a wonderful cafe culture and many great sights. It's one of the places I would like to return to for an extended visit.

We were in Zagreb 3 times. The first time (2014) we stayed in the hotel Dubrovnik which is on Ban Jelačić square. The second time (2017) we spent Christmas and New Year at the Esplanada which is by the train station. And the third time (2019) we stayed at a B&B on Tkalčičeva Street which you passed by in your video. Great video!

Watching this after devastating earthquake that was a month ago.. some of buildings you've passed by are now destined to be demolished because they are too heavily damaged and not safe for living. Also in midst of isolation because of COVID, I miss walks through the town center... Thank you for this video, it touched me.

Nice ... pity you did not stop and tried talking to locals. Had you met me, I'd have told you stories that would have made your video much more interesting. Had you rented a bike you could have covered more of the rest of the center of Zagreb. You missed the Hrvatsko narodno kazaliste (theater), the Sveuciliste building (university of Zag main building) ... ZAG is a city a thousand years old, part of the Habsburg Empire, a copy of Vienna and Budapest and Prague (maybe) ... much better as far as soccer/football goes than any of the neighboring countries except, sometimes, Italy; in everything else, we ZAG people, just like in soccer, Zagreb is outstanding in everything else. This city and the area that successfully together with other Christians beat of Islam Turkish armies in their attempts to spread their cult to the rest of Europe; Zagreb and Croatian part (led by Ban Jelacic ... the main square) of the Habsburg armies together with other generals and nations, saved in 1848 the monarchy from jacobine/marxist/socialist (they did not call themselves that then ..) revolutions all over Europe ... in that same year, in many countries .... as a reward and thanx and to become even better helper and defender, Zagreb was built up into a copy of Vienna. The ablest and brightest officials from all over the empire were sent to ZAG to build it up and to help Croatia to develop faster into a strong nation ... thus, almost half of the surnames in Zagreb are the foreign sounding names of those officials, merchants, etc. .. (Hungarian, German, Polish, Russian, Jewish, Italian ...) who were sent to help and whose ancestors stayed and who all embraced being Croatian from then on. Unique and exceptional for Europe ... an international, tolerant town, cultured almost like Vienna or Paris, build to show appreciation for the help and salvation rendered to the Empire ... a true European Union that happily lasted for 800 years or so, where everybody was united and found purpose in life to not just survive, but also to fight and beat off Islam. Antemurale Christianitatis (Bastion Wall of Christianity) was the name given to Croatia by Pope Leo X. in 1519. And so we fought ever since ... and if you find something objectionable or backward in Croatia, now you know why ... we had no luxury of time and money to pay attention to everything. ... I learned all my English in Zagreb, in Croatian schools and also speak German and Italian and some other languages ... because of our history.

We did take a walking tour of the city and this was actually our second trip there having been for just a couple days during the advent market. It's one of our favorite places we visited in Europe. I hope to get back and spend a lot more time there to get a truer sense of place. Perhaps I'll be able to look you up for a beer or coffee and you can by our story teller for a bit! Thanks for the comment.
