Thank you for that awesome video. I grew up with vinyl records and have been looking to get back into playing them. I want to buy one of those Victrola players. I also saw a video of a guy who says the needle should be immediately changed from a ceramic needle to a diamond head needle, any thoughts on this? Good, not good, does it really matter? Just don't want to ruin my records. Thanx again -Robert
Welcome and check out our playlist for beginners. FYI the cheap needles are ruby / sapphire NOT ceramic. They can be upgraded to diamond but the sound will be the same. They will however last for 1000 plays vs the 100 or so of a sapphire. Ceramic refers to the technology inside the cartridge which takes the vibrations from the needle and uses those movements to bend a ceramic rod which in turn creates electric impulses that get converted to sound.
Yes, a diamond needle will do the least damage AND produce the best sound. Ceramics are generally okay, but they wear out much sooner, and can--but not always--damage your record's grooves if not weighted properly.
In my previous comment about ceramic needles, I stand corrected; they generally won't do any damage to the record's grooves. But my comment about diamond needles stands; they last longer and produce better--clearer--sound.

Great vid I recommend watching the whole thing to completely understand it but I thought this might be a little helpful for other beginners like me!

Thank you! I just got a record player for my sixteenth birthday and was too impatient to let mum and dad figure out how to work it. Your video was excellent, you took the time to explain things slowly and carefully and I’m so glad you put it out there xx
5 years old and still good. I just bought a suitcase vinyl player without thinking much of it and went into panic thinking it was going to scratch my limited edition vinyl (after being told how bad they are for the vinyls) and thought I wasted my money. I literally JUST got confident enough to put the needle on and get it playing- so far so good. Thankyou so much.
Just picked up my first record player today. Thanks so so much for this comprehensive guide. So detailed! I’m 20 and have never used one of these before.
I've been playing vinyl records for over a decade I've had many style machines and records themselves...I would just like to say your videos are amazing and I've sent some to friends your videos have proven useful .. THANK YOU
I will read a book I already read. A live video of how I live. I will lead you to the lead paint. Polish off the Polish sausage. Close in for a close finish. I tear up when my clothes tear.my bass guitar has a sticker of a bass. I will record and record. And so on, and on , and on. Heteronyms

Don't forget to change to a 3 mil stylus when playing 78rpm records, unless you dont mind all the noise or drastically shortening the life of your stylus.
Constant play on a 1 mil would wear it faster but for first timers - I don't think they will be playing a whole lot of 78's. Thank you for watching and commenting!
just got mine yesterday, thank you for this video! love the choice of lp for the video. we used to have bocelli's my christmas in cd and it became a holiday thing when i was young, now gotta find one like yours to bring back the tradition!
Thank you for this! I appreciate your openness to the starter all in one record players like the suitcase. People on Reddit and other videos are so snobby about vinyl!
Thank you for the educational video. I don't think I'll ever play vinyl records super often but who knows. I've ordered my first ever vinyl, without owning a turntable/record player. I like to own vinyl records without owning a turntable to play them with, it's about that tangible physical visual experience for me, like you explained. I will get a turntable at some point. Audio Technica or something. It's just hard to find one that's good quality and all-around good for a fair price.
I’m a millennial who had been considering for quite a while buying a record player and I FINALLY did (I have one VERY similar to the one in your video)! And being born in the late 80s at a time when records were quickly going out of style, I had no clue where to even begin with how to operate a record player. But this video taught me LITERALLY everything I need to know about how to use one (including some things I wouldn’t have even thought of, like a record brush!) and I’m happy to be part of the growing number of millennials who aren’t afraid to reach back and enjoy some things from the past. THANK YOU to the creator of this video!
Thank you so much I’m getting my first record player and vinyls tomorrow and I wasn’t sure how to play a record. This video definitely helped so much thank you!
I remember my dad using these in the 80's in Mexico he used to call them Lp's, just got me a little VictRola player today and found some Star Wars records in my Local Pawn shop, I'm gonna give it a chance.
I just got my new record player a few days ago and my first vinyl last night! I’m about to play it and I’m very excited, thank you so much for this tutorial!💜🙂
Another good vid Record-ology. I own a suitcase player, it's not Crosley branded, but a Digitnow M46. I'me not apprehensive in the least to play any record on it, as I do not go with the exaggerated idea that records will be ruined on these devices. You're completely right to keep repeating this to viewers, how on earth others think that records will be destroyed on these is beyond me, they're as light as a feather, the tone arms are made of plastic, they hardly weigh a ton. They may track a little heavier, but this aids in the prevention of skipping and jumping if someone may be stamping their feet. There is some method of counterweight in these players aswell, it's like the feel of a spring, something of which you've already identified. Every time I lower the tone arm onto the record, nothing feels like it's being in any way harmed by the player. Regards.

Thank you so much ! I just bought my first suitcase platine and learned everything I needed thanks to your explanations ! Didn't even need to read the manual haha
Excellent video! Only thing i'd mention is that if you're in the UK/Europe, most of the time 45s (or 7" records) have the small hole as standard (unless from a jukebox), it's really the American ones with the big holes.
Great video, man! A friend of mine just gifted me my very first vinyl record and I really want to get a player and learn more about these type of records.
I love playing vinyl records the sound is so vintage and authentic I have a Closley suitcase record player couse I'm a beginner but I can't wait to upgrade but it is still an awesome starter kit
If you have lost your paper sleeves or need to replace a few, do NOT put your LP's or 45's in any PVC plastic sleeves. In fact, avoid any type of stiff plastic sleeves. The flexible, thin, plastic sleeves such as those one used to put multi-paged paper reports in are okay.

I got a suitcase turntable for my birthday last year. Its a Byron Statics brand. It came with a diamond needle. They sent a extra needle with the record player. How do i know if it is a diamond needle?
nah but on a more serious note I had the same thing happen to me, if you are still having the problem and are like me you probably just forgot to take off the plastic covering over the needle.

Its wild to me that this is something people dont know. Im only 22 but grew up with parent that immigrated to the US so they often told me stories. Beyond people just having never heard of records, I remember when I worked retail a kid who was probably around 16-17 came in to buy something and geuinly asked me how to use their debit card. They straight up did not know because the only purchases they ever made thus far was with amazon and I had to tell them how it worked. Its crazy how things that were ubiquitous to me and my folks just is not necessarily relevant anymore.

How come we say record as in “I”m going to record a video,” but then say Record as in “WOW, what a nice Vinyl Record?” It’s so funny to me!!!
Good point.
Because record and record are two different things.
