  • As pianists we often forget that breathing will have a great impact on the sound that we want to create. In this video I show you 4 different ways to breathe before touching the first key and why you should think about the first breath carefully for every piece.
    On this channel I am going to share my experience and thoughts about fingerings, interpretation, fingertechniques and playing piano in generel. If you have any questions or ideas please leave it in the comments!

    This is brilliant. I always catch myself holding my breath, I don’t know why! I forget to breathe. I feel like if I breathe I’m going to loose my place because and disconnect from what I’m doing

      You are not alone in this !! It happens with me too but with classical guitar. Take a look at this video by Kathia Buniatishvili th-cam.com/video/DBl2ClXzt3U/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=PaoloCiri see how she breathes at the beginning of clair the lune without loose the feeling.

    Annique - Breathing = Breathing in and breathing out. Don't stop breathing!
    Me - "Got it, Annique." *Scribbles note with intensity* "I'll let you know how that works out for me." XD
    I only found your channel because of one of your crazy challenges. I saw one, loved it! Then I started from your video and have worked my way to this. I am loving your philosophy around Piano.
    I only just started playing myself. I'm about 2 weeks in so it's early days. I used to be a bass guitarist for an instrumental band and I had a very similar way of thinking about bass guitar as you do piano. Since staring Piano, I've been trying to work out how to think about it in a similar way as I used to with bass and I think you may be answering that question for me with this youtube adventure that you are on.
    Thanks so much for your insight. :)

    You are a brilliant teacher. This is not at all awkward! I actually do have a problem with breathing, because I often practically hold my breath while practicing. Or typing on the computer. So hard to breathe and finger at the same time!

    As someone who sings and plays wind instruments as well as keys, I kind of get the breathing thing on one level. To sing or to play oboe, we breathe with and before phrases, and sometimes when I'm about to play piano, particularly if I'm performing, I take a moment to breathe just before starting. I have never given thought to the WAY to breathe before starting a piece or a song, so that aspect of this is a new one on me. I like how you appear to appreciate when something you've just said is potentially confusing, but I will heed your advice and I'll try to remember to breathe, from now on. :)

    Thank you so much for this, and for all your other videos which are so informative. I only recently found your channel, and as a 61yr old, taking lessons again after a 40+ year gap, I am learning so much. I struggle massively with tension throughout my body when I play - especially with very challenging (to me) music, such as Debussy's 2nd Arabesque. I am going to practice now, and see if the techniques you have demonstrated will help.

    Very inspiring ! Can you explain further the difference between 1 and 4 please? They are very similar to me. Many thanks !

    • @heartofthekeys
      @heartofthekeys  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      luckie Iam the main difference between 1&4 is the tension in your body. The way you touch the key while exhaling is smoother so often it is easier to start “lyrical” pieces like this. In no.1 I start on a “platform” on the highest energy level while in no.4 the first note is “tangent” to my breathing - not sure if this explanation makes any sense to you 😅 The sound difference is indeed very small as the way of breathing is in both cases calm and long but you should feel the difference while playing 😊
      I will do another video about this topic and try to explain more details :)

    I found out, that I stop breathing, when playing the piano(not all the time, but the difficult phrases, for sure). Yeah, i payed too much attention to the piano, got tense and this habbit was around for quite some time. Mabye even when i stared playing. I was always wondering what was missing in my playing. It was good, but not awesome. So i focused on my breathing for last five moths and now the music i create is on an completely another level. THE MUSIC IS ALIVE.
    !!!BREATHING IS EVERYTHING!!!

    Thanks alot. I think many piano teachers don't even teaches this very important aspects to their students. I like the way you suppress your laughter. Very cute. I also often wonder if pianist like Yukie Nishimura timed her breath to let audience feel the music through her breathing expression. Interesting indeed.

    Great video! I need more practice on breathing. When I consciously breathe in while playing, I tend to mess up the notes. Especially when a difficult part is coming up, I can feel myself holding my breath and tensing up, like watching a thriller movie.

    I notice how you suck in a breath before you start, that is incredible. All the things we need to think about as performers, breath doesn't cross my mind, but it should. I like number 4 calm and long. I think that will help manage my stress better in some harder pieces. Thank you! ❤

  • @manuelmilano9901
    @manuelmilano9901 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, amazing content.
    It's not very clear to me though how you breath "through" the whole piece.
    After you inhale, the exhaling is connected with a number of bars or you go in some kind of "apnea"?
    Hope to hear from you.
    Kind regards,
    Manuel
