How did Russia Win the 2018 World Cup Bid?

  • December 2nd 2010, is a day that has gone down in infamy. It was the day, in Zurich, when the then FIFA president announced who would host the 2018 and 2022 World Cup finals. Of course, the moment Sepp Blatter pulled out a card and read the name QATAR is the most memorable and controversial moment. But, no less important and no less controversial was the choice of the 2018 World Cup hosts: Russia.

I accept Russia hosting 2018 as it has a football history, but hosting a world cup in Qatar at Winter is the biggest joke on Earth.

Masivni That's not even the main issue , the way their stadiums are getting built is the problem. They are using forms of modern slavery, and hundreds of people have already died. Qatar is definitely the last place the world cup should be held.

I don't particularly like Russia, but i can see why they have a genuine case to host a world cup. What I cannot and will never accept is Qatar being given a world cup. They are wholly irrelevant in football other than having ownership of clubs. Until about 4 years ago the closest Qatar came to football was Qatar airways sponsoring Barcas shirt. I agree with spreading football across the world, but this isn't the way to do it - giving it to corrupt high bidders from nations with little to no moral compass.

    • @benh9935

I think I saw a video on your channel. Qatar winning the world cup, Neymar signing for PSG (owned by Middle Easterners) etc are not a surprise. It is all a power grab and show-off. Plus, the attention is gonna be a great boom for their economy.
Unlike in Brazil, where the public could protest, the workers who have died and are dying will not be represented and protested for in Qatar.

Good video that shows that every country involved employed the same tactics. Sometimes these reports make it look like only Russia or Qatar were corrupt. The whole process has always been about money and as this video shows England and USA losing played a big part in corruption allegations. It’s hard to see how this will change though. They’ll probably say “we’ve appointed new officials etc” but with an event like this it’s always going to be bribes and to a smaller extent politics that decide the winner

I love how a video about bidding for the World Cup is two times as long as a video about the 2010 champions at this World Cup. Goes to show how football isn't just a game played on a field with a ball.

I want to see the North American bid happen for 2026 but I think all 3 of us (US, Mexico and Canada) should have to qualify through the normal concacaf process. Mexico and the US usually qualify anyway. Canada is gonna have the tough time

That's why hosting rights are good because automatically qualifying as host gets the whole nation interested on a much higher level. Canada playing in a world cup will be a dramatic boost to the game in that nation.

And you were...RIGHT! Morrocco lost the bid, and Trump's threats worked.
Even friendly African nations to Morrocco such as Guinea voted for the US... And I'm not even talking about the Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia who not even vote against Morrocco but participated in influencing for a 2026 World Cup in the US.
But you know what, it's all fine! In 2026, Players will have to sleep in planes between games and enjoy the pleasure of playing jetlagged for a month by transiting in 3 countries and 5 different time zones.
    Merci FIFA!
