I've always felt guilty and thought "I of all people should understand that behaviour and not judge it" so it's great to know it's a recognised thing to an extent I've also defo been through periods when I've been really harshly judgmental of people showing (socially) "strange" behaviour that reminds me of myself in the past, as though I think because I've "grown out" of that (read: learned to mask it cause society didn't like it), they should have too. It's toxic but also an understandable trauma response, and understanding that has helped me be less judgmental :)
It’s so weird passing as male now with people labeling my autistic traits as “creepy” instead of “quirky” rip. Though recently I haven’t been able to mask so people just treat me like a 4 year old, but I guess that’s better than be treated as creepy?? Idk 😭 lol

I'll admit I've sometimes been harsher than I should have been on peers who displayed behavior that I spent a long time trying to control in myself because it reminds me of terrible things in my past. I tend to be better about it now but the knee-jerk reaction is still there.
One thing that annoyed me when I was in high school was that some people when they thought of autism thought of Chris Chan. While not a fan of the Sheldon Cooper comparison, I would MUCH rather be compared to Sheldon Cooper than Chris Chan, but kids knew I hated it so they did it more. I also without thinking display "creep" behaviors (I'm living proof that girls get called creepy too, in fact some called me "creepy Jamie" behind my back), I tended to flirt with guys by complimenting them very directly, I tend to smile constantly without swallowing my spit (use your imagination on how that turned out) and in class I tend to without thinking stare at the guy with my mouth hanging open, literally drooling over him. It probably doesn't help matters that I wear a raincoat all the time (I wear the same outfit all the time, or variations of it, tank top, miniskirt, green raincoat over that, raincoat almost used as a dress, and mid-calf boots). I'm also really tall for a girl (5-foot-10) so maybe my height is perceived as masculine or something (despite being overall very girly).
11:06 The whole Chris Chan phenomenon is a perfect example of this. Me, and every one of my autistic friends, either has or has had at some point a Chris Chan in their life. A more "cringy" autistic person (and in Chris's case specifically, an autistic person who has also genuinely done some very horrible things) that they can laugh at and say to themselves "well at least I'm not like _them_". Chris Chan is particularly fascinating because Chris's life can also double as a special interest - I know it was one of mine for a time, and I can tell you with certainty that the vast majority of "Christorians" are almost definitely autists who have Chris as one of their special interests.
I hear people from the 1970's anecdotally saying clowns are not creepy to their generation and it's because of 80's horror culture that we see clowns as creepy now....

Furries also have a high percentage of members of the community that are also autistic. (And / or LGBTQ+) Which one might expect from a group known as "cringe" for un ironically enjoying thing others put down.

Somewhat embarrassing confession, as a millennial Austic, I don't always understand various new terms or even old turns of phrase. Until I watched this I thought the concept of cringe was related to being problematic, like when one's implicit biases are showing (such as doing or saying something, only to have someone point out that the words or action was a racist micro aggression or something). And of course I don't always understand or agree with why something is labeled the way it is. This concept of cringe just sounds like people shaming each other, which is not cool and "cringe" by my former definition, as it outs their bigotry and non acceptance of anyone different from them. Again, thank you for this morning's education.
I know a person who would be not as creepy if they could dial down on the *attempted* masking. I'm not sure if that's possible, because unconscious, but they seem to be imitating a satirical, exaggerated film character trope constantly. The obvious fakeness equals uncanny valley level creepiness. Plus, then there are intermittent moments of relative authenticity, so the persona appears to switch out unexpectedly, which is even more creepy. I have never felt safe around this person. If one must mask, maybe keep it real?
I sort of dimly knew that my negative reactions to someone being socially awkward in mixed company was maybe related to my own awkwardness in other areas but I guess I needed to hear it from someone else, to know that others who maybe don't fit in with the general expected line of behavior might harbor similar negative reactions, perhaps more strongly because they're anticipating backlash from gatekeepers and the like. Strangely, knowing that others who express themselves differently may also be reacting strongly makes me feel better about that reflex, and maybe it'll help me rein it in better over time...
This is so cool, but also annoying. I've been trying to tell people this stuff, but a lack of structured education and an abundance of fear/anger renders it unintelligible. Now to avoid sharing 20+ videos to my somewhat estranged family that probably still won't be watched/understood.
