  • Brittle stars are eyeless, brainless animals that spend their time hanging out in dark crevices of coral reefs. But despite all this, it seems that they can still see...using their skin!

Hey Sci Show! I really wanted to ask a question about the coming death hornet invasion. Do you think that introducing small Japanese honeybee populations to European honey bees in a lab and making them cohabitate, and then releasing strong groups of these cohabitated bees offspring into the natural population of honeybees hopefully allowing them to cohabitate with those populations. My hope is that through both the heritage of the Japanese honeybee offspring and epigenetic exchange would potentially give these bees the ability to learn the overwhelming vibration tactics of the Japanese honeybees.

Gotta question to Scishow. Why did we develop a urinary tract through the reproductory organs when it urine could have had it leave through the anus, considering its passing potentially dangerous products through the reproductory system instead of one that is already compromised with feces?

My Brittle star can sense food the minute it drops into the tank even if that is out of “sight.” My bamboo shark was the same..poor eyesight, good senses. They can “smell” food in the water, and my star will go after it and catch it with its arms and those arms can curl up around food or even pass food along its rows of hair-like projections towards the center.

We can already design robots with the same ability, using photoresistors. They're very cheap and simple to work with. Brittle stars obviously aren't resolving any details, they aren't focusing light, and they probably don't even care about color. They're really just trying to find a place they find safe. But, they also move incredibly slowly. They don't have to accidentally worry about bumping into something and breaking, in the same way a robot would.

There are numerous decentralized control systems. In vehicles (my field of work), there is a separate computer for most systems. Most operate over some form of can network. It's just a way of decentralization, but if one gets wiped out there wont be another to do its job, and if the network goes down nothing happens. I'm sure the industry will build redundancy in future systems...

I early on hypothesized: body's are 'brain' by deign of multiple cells coinciding as organisms do; however even more 'brain' can be concentrated by having nerves and moreover by having nerve clusters and furthermore in having a central nervous system processor in it's own body cavity: but a brain is the organism sans organ proper. If an argument against this posit can be directed at, viruses, for this purpose; that'd be fine: as this hypothesis engages viral bodies in the same vein as non-brain macro organisms.
