Electrons flow the same in any battery system. My worry was the production was more important than your safety. Batteries of that size can cause a huge explosion if you short circuit. If your negative is still connected and you hit the frame with your wrench!

  • @crazy1kid

Always disconnect negative first then connect negative last on install. It prevents the possibility of arching positive by touching the chassis when tightening positive side

  • @hom240
    @hom240 4 ปีที่แล้ว +51

Got it backwards Pippi. Neg (-) off first when removing a battery. Pos(+) on first when installing. This prevents you accidentally grounding the positive to the body with your wrench.

You always want Red to be alone.
You disconnect negative first, then positive.
You connect positive first, then negative.
It's a safety process. If something slips, a wrench on the negative side won't do anything. If you're doing something on positive with the positive side, and negative is connected, then you might let the smoke out of your battery and your wrench

Pippi negative first is the safest way to remove and install a battery. WOW that corded drill you have is a antique it still works. If you have any files a round one would have taken care of that terminal it didn't look like much had to be removed. One thing for sure when you get something working you have a huge smile. Pippi, I am an electrical engineer and on a DC circuit with common negative connections, Negative is always first off and last on. It all to due to current flow on a negatively ground circuit. On the rare wiring of Positive common grounding, then the positive is first off and last on, put positive common ground is very rare.

Always disconnect the negative or ground terminal first so you don't risk shorting the tools on the positive terminal to ground. When installing the battery install the positive first then the ground or negative terminal last.

I had the same thing happen when installing a new deep cell battery - the loop connector would not fit over the new battery's post. Using my handy lineman's pliers, I snipped the loop and spread it to fit around the post, and screwed the nut down as usual. Saves buying another loop connector and splicing it onto the wire. (I don't find splicing difficult, but it does result in your wire having an electrical tape bulge, or a wire nut - and a trip to the store. So I just split it and mounted as usual.) Anyway, glad you're back on, posting. You have devoted followers.

Regarding the battery cable thing, It's always neg first and last, never any other way with DC power. What handy Bob was likely referring to is the black wire is normally ground with DC wiring, but in the RV world black is hot like the AC power. Need to always be cautious and confirm.

A good rule of thumb is to disconnect negative first and connect negative last. Less likely to arc your ratchet and when re-connecting the positive it will not have a ground for the spark to jump to.

You still need a battery strap going over the top of the battery, So the battery doesn't go flying and short out on something and cause a fire, Like the propane bottle next too it.

Ummm, FYI, automotive batteries have a "group size" which is why your RV battery didn't fit and the battery post was the wrong size. The battery mounts that hold it down in case of crash also indicate the group size. Looking later, it would appear that you checked out the group size for the truck and the car, so maybe you already know about this. If not, it might be a good idea to strap down the battery so it doesn't go flying in case of crash.

An easy rule of thumb with batteries is to only mess with the positive if the negative is disconnected. With that it'll be very safe without any sparking. This is the case for all batteries.
Btw, finding the correct size socket just requires knowing the bolt size and adding 3/16".

Probably wasn't intentional, but another good learning point to take away is how working during the heat of the day (especially while lifting heavy batteries) will bring on exhaustion and cause one to start slipping up, loose focus and the like.
I've made a few goofs this way and that's without the distraction of attempting to film what I was trying to accomplish.
Always best to take breaks when you can, but I understand how the doggos like a running ac during summer.
    Keep at it.

You can drill those connectors a little larger if they are not too cheaply made. Hold connector with vise grips and drill the hole bigger or get a friend to help with the holding. Could also clamp the vise grip and connector to a metal frame piece and then drill.

I have had diesel trucks for 14 years, I currently have a 2011 Ram 3500. Low batteries can cause major problems with your truck like computer issues shifting etc. all are electronically controlled low voltage equals trouble. I switched to AGM and replace every 5 years, every 4 for led acid.
No need to shut off shore power when working on batteries in RV just flip the braker in the rv for the converter.

U ALWAYS want to connect the POSITIVE cable 1st Then the ground. With all the new technology sensitivity of the ELECTRONICS u do not want to SPARK the POSITIVE the sudden draw could cause circuit issues.
This is just FYI: If u ever need ur tow vehicle jumped to get it started remember when u connect cables from ur vehicle to someone else's always connect POSITIVE to both vehicles 1st then the GROUND. When you disconnect the cables remove the GROUND 1st then the POSITIVE. That will protect ur vehicle's computer and u will be able to drive off.
Very impressed with your diagnosis to solve your problem.

The reason the negative is disconnected first is because it eliminate the possibility of creating a short between the positive and ANY other metal that is connected to the negative side of the battery, which is a lot. There is FAR less chance of shorting to an exposed positive wire when disconnecting the negative terminal. Just avoid the positive side of the battery and any other red wires.

I'm curious, Pippi "did your truck or the Vet lose its' computer memory"? Because most modern cars/trucks almost always need a "memory saver" of some type to prevent having to reprogram the computer when disconnecting the battery. I use a cheap ODB memory saver when I disconnect the terminals for any reason. FYI - It can cost $1000 or more on some vehicles to resolve the problems caused by disconnecting the terminals without using a memory saver. Also - I don't advise jumping off modern cars "again the computers don't like it at all" and a simple friendly battery jump can cost you $1000s to repair". I keep a battery backup on hand for jumping my battery or someone else's battery + it's a good backup/emergency power bank, flashlight, phone charger, and emergency roadside strobe light. The one I use is the NOCO Boost HD GB70 2000 Amp 12V

Usually the negative or ground cable is black and connections to the positive are red. Usually he negative post is slimmer at 11/16” and the positive is 3/4”. Use a tapered reamer on the cable ends to clean up the connections. Enough people have mentioned the order for disconnect and connect. Often times accessory makers will prefer a ground lead directly to the battery rather than a chassis ground.

Glad it all worked out for you. My first thought re the battery cable connector was to use a drill bit or reamer to slightly enlarge the hole. I'm guessing the 90º+ heat beat you ups a bit (I know heat & humidity kick my butt). Is sounds like you DON'T have one of the newer VERY compact Lithium battery packs that can be used to help start a vehicle. One of those may well have kept you up and running until a more convenient work time could be arranged. Good to see that you prevailed. Keep on keeping' on!

Pippi, ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE FIRST !!!!!!!!!!! Why you ask ?? If your wrench is on the NEG which is "typically" grounded to the RV frame and it comes in contact with any frame metallic component NOTHING HAPPENS HOWEVER if your wrench is on the battery POS post (NEG still attached) and it comes in contact with any frame metallic component THATS A DEAD SHORT CAPABLE OF PRODUCING HUNDREDS OF AMPS OF CURRENT PLUS EXTREME HEAT AND CAN CAUSE THE BATTERY TO EXPLODE SPEWING ACID ALL OVER YOU !!!!!!!!!! Similar when re connecting, connect the POS first for the same reasoning.
John T Retired Electrical Engineer and 49 year RV owner

  • @dunlapmichaell
    @dunlapmichaell 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Actually, put on the positive cable (red) first. That way you can tighten it without having to worry about hitting the tool against any metal since the ground isn't connected to yet. Then, you can connect the negative (black) cable. As long as you don't hit the positive side of the battery with a tool as you tighten it, you're good to go.

If you have some heavy duty jumper cables, you could use them to swap between old/new batteries while working out all the other details.

If that Interstate was not a deep cycle battery, it would die young. It also pays to insulate your wrench and cover the terminals, because if you touch the wrench across the two battery terminals that can be a 3000 to 5000 amp "crowbar short" which can amputate your finger!

@@karenharris6971 I don't think she thinks she made a mistake. She misses the fundamental principle that when the negative terminal is connected, the whole frame becomes the negative terminal. Therefore if you are touching the positive terminal to disconnect it, and happen to touch bare metal anywhere, you will short out the battery.

Some time when you get a chance, you should take a trip to the Clifton Observatory. I have wanted to go there for a while, but without a travel trailer, it's not really practical. It looks like a pretty interesting place.

You could put jumper cables between the old and new battery as a temporary measure.
