Setting the shoulder- Arguably the #1 reason you don’t feel consistent! Week 4

- The front shoulder is such a critical part of archery form. We are in the 4th week of School for 2025. The 3rd step to my archery process is “setting the front shoulder”. The shoulder is very complex and where you have it set in archery will certainly be the deciding factor of sending an arrow with ease and accuracy OR giving yourself a first class ticket on the struggle bus downrange.
Many archers don't understand that what you do with the shoulder before you even draw the bow is already choosing the outcome that f your accuracy.
In this video I show you exactly what you need to know and give you one more building block to perfect technique.
I deliberately brought the shoulder blade to the spine, I thought it was the right thing to do. Now it's clear why I can't shoot with my back but press my finger. This is valuable advice. I'll try it tomorrow.
One thing I would like to say about your channel it this, You genuinely care about helping others and I would like to say thank you, too many other coaches etc would make this a paid lesson, so thank you for sharing your knowledge with us at an affordable price, it is truly appreciated.

Collapsing front shoulder, this is definitely my biggest form issue. Thanks for all the tips over the years!
Thanks for following along!
I cannot tell you how much this helped. I’m much steadier and my “x” count went way up.
That’s awesome!
Best time of year to revisit our form. Content is always tactful and to the point. Much appreciated Sir!
Thank you so much for this. Totally changed my shooting. Less fatigue and my groups out to 40 became pretty tight.
Thanks for addressing this. I just had to address this in my shot process recently as I had been over compressing my shoulder for quite a while which was beginning to develop a pinched nerve. Fortunately my chiropractor also shoots bows and was able to help me out, and correct my form. As usual though, this is a much more complete and thorough answer.
Amazing! I wish my chiropractor shot bows too😂
I’ve been obsessing over stepping up my archery game lately and pushing distance and this just made a huge impact in my setup feel. My draw and setup feels like a ton tension was just removed from it and I was super comfortable while setting up the shot which allows me to focus more on the release 🔥
Thank you. I had a shoulder replacement on my bow shoulder a little over a year ago. Been shooting since last August. I’ve noticed my shoulder wants to creep up sometimes. I’ll put this info to use. I did shoot a local 3D this past weekend with some friends and we had a great time. Felt good to get back to it. Keep the teaching vids going!
Give it a try! Plenty more teaching vids to come😎
I love your form videos! Thank you for making these and sharing!
Another great video, John. I am enjoying this series. This is the kind of information we need to get better and what I hope to see from people like you. Thank you.
You’re a legend mate, I’ve learned everything I know from you. Been in only two 3d comps to date and have come first in A division both times. I’ve been getting neck pain this last year and haven’t understood what I’m doing wrong I use the push pull method.
I feel this video has fully addressed everything I’m doing wrong.
Thank you so much, I hope one day I get the opportunity to meet you in person.
LET'S. FREAKING. GO
Thanks for the advice, I'm literally researching shoulders and the placement for the shot. Thanks for the help.
Excellent. Thank you.
I needed this advice. Good work John!
excellente vidéo ! tous les archers devraient voir et s inspirer de cette vidéo très explicite … vos élèves ont de la chance de posséder un coach tel que vous.. vraiment beaucoup de chance 👍🤝
Great info. Doing PT now, and working to build support muscles for my shot. Thanks!
Great information
😊
Love all the content man
When I first switched to a tension activated release it really showed how inconsistent my front shoulder was. You know when it seems really hard to get it to go off that your shoulder is collapsing.
I was very inconsistent with my bow. I was able to shoot soda cans at 50 yards consistently. After purchasing a video called Holding Steady by PSE, I believe. I thought it was like sure sell me a video. But it worked. My problem was I was shooting a bow that was 29" draw length and when I went down to 28-1/2" it made a world of difference.
It’s crazy how draw length can change things.
@nockonarchery That and having 3 anchor points. I haven't shot a bow since 2010 when I shot a bull at 60 yards. Double lung complete pass through. I miss those days. Stay strong and have fun.
Appreciate you very much! Can you please tell me a little bit about your head position, looks like your head is not facing the target when you shoot, like it's turned to the right as you look hard left. Everything I see you do is for good reason. Please educate us on this one thing. Thank you sir for all that you do!
Why do we see pros with a bent front arm vs the straight arm? Thanks for video!
Do they ship you the bow already painted like that or do you have a guy that does it for you ?
I work on this daily and film it as my shoulders are cooked
Why didnt someone tell me this 30 years ago?
I’m a newbie to bow hunting . Every time I release I’m hitting my forearm
Give this guys School of nock videos a go, look for the right amount of open stance and how to grip your bow and angle your arm, you will get it right, no problems!
@ thank you
Surely it couldn't have anything to do with the chest mounted bino harnesses every one is wearing just to look cool 😂
A lot of people make shooting a bow entirely too complicated. Don't think about the shot. Free your mind. Follow through. That simple. We grew up shooting bows that shot at the speed of smell as well as being unforgiving. You guys are using archery technology that basically shoots it for you. Have fun and shoot. Shoot regularly. The rest will work itself out. If you don't shoot all year then try to shoot right before deer season it's not going to work out. Our generation shot all year. Why we didn't/don't wound deer.
With respect what you're saying is rather nonsense and dismisses the idea that there are levels to everything. This is a world champion archer breaking down the nuance of how to get better by paying attention to the small things while constantly practicing, the series is not about just flinging arrows in your backyard to be good enough to shoot whitetail deer out of a tree stand at 20 yards. While technology has progressed your statement is more relevant and rifle hunting with Smart Scopes then bow hunting. It's still a string, an arrow, and something that releases it. Nothing special has changed since you're good old days where no one ever missed a deer 😅 besides people pushing to be better and having the luxury of information from great people who are worth listening to such as John.
Exactly I was gonna say the same thing and by the way even with everything perfect if he wants to take it there don't matter hiw good you are everyone wounds deer eventually don't wanna hear that bull crap animals move, duck ect.,ect. And no bow shoots itself for ya. People say anything I tell ya. The world we live in🤔
Free your mind. Follow through. Shoot your bow. Have fun. Wise words and solid advice IMHO, We should all practice finding common ground more often and not immediately attacking ideas we disagree with.
And yes, people will say anything. Thank God we still have that right.
And what generation is this? My grandpa shot anything that moved anywhere he could. I’ve hunted with guys in their 70’s that are the same way. Usually by the time they get their deer they’ve already probably killed or injured 2 others 😂
