Love Styx! I remember seeing them live in the 80's when I was still in school. My wife and I took our daughter to her first concert with Styx, Journey and Night Ranger many years ago. She knew most of the songs since we had played them often while she was growing up.
Back in 1990 I was at my first duty station doing my first CQ duty and this came on AFN in the middle of the night and after all those years I finally related to this song.
I can honestly say that from listening to them when they 1st came out to how he rocked it here, I don't hear that much difference. Its a craft that you can sound like you did live that you did on a studio version. They both sound completely the same to me. I've always like Styx, even before Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung had their differences. I was upset when someone stole my CD from my CD case. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Great pick Melanie.
I'm from that era, and I am amazed at how many people do NOT like STYX. I think they are highly talented. I've followed them since they released "Crystal Ball".
One of my favorite STYX songs!!! They're awesome in concert...I've also seen Damn Yankees (with Bad Co.). I've always had a crush on Tommy Shaw and he still looks fantastic!!! I hope that you have a wonderful and blessed day my friend!!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂 🐧🐧
That was a blast from the past! I saw Styx when they performed in our high school gym back in the 70’s before they got famous. Only about 1/2 the seats were full, and administration made them perform with all the lights on. Guess they were afraid of us getting pregnant or something during the show. Good times.
I love this song ...it is so fast paced. It came out in 1981 and this performance was done in 1996. Styx is still performing. I can't watch this video without it lifting my mood.
The singer Tommy Shaw is from Montgomery Alabama and along with his work in Styx and Damn Yankees is an amazing bluegrass artist also .He does a concert with some young singers and musicians you need to check out .So nice to see an artist of his caliber sit down and be joined with our young artists especially in this day and time when most artists couldn't be bothered to inspire and teach our youth ,another who does this is Billy Joel another artist to seriously check out have yet to even hear a song from him that wasn't amazing just pick any of them all of them are great
STYX was always good in concert, plus they're very entertaining and you can tell they truly enjoy performing. So either version, live or studio, is good. Tommy Shaw has a great voice and is a very talented guitarist. I think you had reacted to their very famous song, "Renegade" which really shows his singing skills. If you haven't, I hope you do. :)
Thanks everyone! I have officially crossed over into senior citizen category with this bday! Feels weird but it also means that I was alive back then and got to see bands like Styx in their hey day. Great memories, great memories indeed.
Just a suggestion Ty, Tommy Shaw(the singer) collaborated in concert with The Contemporary Youth Orchestra in 2017. They cover many Styx songs. It is fabulous. The cable channel AXS TV shows it ever so often. Twice this week. Check it out. You won’t be disappointed. The CYO looks to be from 10 to 20 years of age. Spectacular what these young people are doing.
Ahhh! I remember this one on the radio when I was working nights painting stripes in parking garages in Houston, Texas in 1982 when I was 22, Ty! I love this song! And what a boring job that was.....The pay was good for back then, though. I made $6 an hour cash and worked 10 hour days. Not bad for a girl. Ha....
Another great Rock Group from my hometown of Chi-town. Styx have great songs all the way around. One of my favorite songs from Styx would be Come Sail With Me & Lady. Ty U should checked these songs out from Styx. Another great hit from Tommy Shaw lead singer from Styx is a solo hit called Dangerous Game. Tha's another great song Ty that U should Check out. Hopefully U get a chance to checked those songs out.
Tommy said he wrote this song in about 10 minutes. He heard the bass rhythm on the radio on his way to the studio. He had Chuck Panazzo lay down the bass beat and monkeyed with the rest of it and they recorded it in about an hour, then it was in the bank.🤑🤑
My favorite song by Styx will always be ''Suite Madame Blue'' now I want to request for the bingo ball the band Triumph - ''Lay It On The Line'' or their song ''Fight the Good Fight''
If you want too hear a man with a voice he (Rob Halford) was once an opera singer his voice could reach the pitch that litterly break glass look up Judas Priest--- Desert Plains live 1983 concert I love the song the live version in 1983 was a killer check it if you have the time
Haters gonna HATE. That's their job. So, let them hate and just react to the Videos however you want. I think it subtracts from the reaction, to always hear how some people "Might" be "Offended". That should be THEIR problem, not yours. In other words, react to the Video, not them. Just had to get that one off my chest.
@@roydization I wasnt paying attention to who was even playing drums. Who was it? Getting them confused with Toto at the moment. Were the bass player and the original drummer brothers?
Technically, Tommy Shaw, the lead singer here was not an original member of Styx. He joined after Styx had already released five albums, replacing original member John Curulewski. Styx was already big (at least in my hometown Chicago) by then, but rose to even greater heights, thanks to Shaw's songwriting, singing, and guitar playing prowess.
I have a idea for a band to check out they weren't a big name band but they did once hit number 1 on the billboard Christian music chart The band was called Scarlet White RIP Spenser Minor
I enjoyed this but it sadened me as well. Musically they were spot on as usual. The vocalist talent is still apparent as well. Unfortunately as happens to all great singers eventually the range shrinks a little. Love that they were still having a great time doing what they love but saddened a lil at the key drop from when they first did this though completely understand why. Still more joy than sadness lol
I like the studio versions of songs better...I think it's because I get used to hearing them a certain way and the live versions are so much different! Don't get me wrong, I like a good concert but I am one that has to be right there in person to experience the energy in the room and the music!
Hey there Ty! Would you pleeease also react to STYX- "Lady" and "Mr. Roboto"? Personally, I wld suggest the studio versions of those- very unfortunately, I never got to see them in concert.. so I just suggest studio versions for that reasons Especially for a first time listen. Just a suggestion, but would love to see it! Love STYX! Sending love- 💛🤘🏼✌🏼BTW- just heard what you said about live versions,😬 Oops- live or studio--
Here is a great video of the song "Renegade" by Styx along with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra from Clevelend th-cam.com/video/HquvpZ1xRik/w-d-xo.html The concert reruns on AXS. The kids play with many top bands...they are so lucky!
Styx has so _MANY_ excellent songs. This one is, to me anyway, one of their weaker songs. Suite Madame Blue, Blue Collar Man, Come Sail Away and even Mr. Roboto all are to me at least better songs.
@@sanniepstein4835 I was able to find at least one song on each of their albums I've liked. For example, Mr. Roboto was the _ONLY_ one from Kilroy that I liked at all while I enjoy most of the songs from the Grand Illusion era..
As a rule, I avoid Styx. For me, they were overplayed...too many Dennis DeYoung ballads. But this song is a welcome relief. They are not a group I would listen to, but I do promote to everyone to go see their concert. They are a good show. I also so their 'Mr Roboto' show. It was cringe-worthy and really good all at the same time.
Ha! I always used to tease that Foreigner & Styx are “chick” bands lol! I love this song... this was almost as good as the studio version, but I saw Styx in the 80’s & they were great live.. i love this song 🙂
caralayne503 it seems to me that Styx is mostly liked by women. But I think their music is great. Foreigner I’ve never heard that but they’re one of my favorites
First band in history to have 4 triple platinum albums in a row.......not The Beatles, not The Rolling Stones.....STYX!
Love Styx! I remember seeing them live in the 80's when I was still in school. My wife and I took our daughter to her first concert with Styx, Journey and Night Ranger many years ago. She knew most of the songs since we had played them often while she was growing up.
One of the best live bands. They still sound as good today (maybe better). Tommy Shaw never ages
He sounds the same every tour. Just one of those singers who has a great live voice and studio voice.
And love Styx. They are still awesome in concert.
My favorite Styx song
These guys are just as good live now as they were then.
I love watching live performances as well. This band was great in concert.
Styx snow blind great song

Styx .. 70's & 80's .. yep listened to them while we teens hung together in parks in the ATL .. great memories!
I can honestly say that from listening to them when they 1st came out to how he rocked it here, I don't hear that much difference. Thank's Barbara
A wonderful lineup tonight 👍 I love Styx 💚👍

Massachusetts Here 💋
Good live band, love your reactions thanks👍
Love this song
So much fun live
Look up the concert with cyo
(Cleveland youth orchestra)
Just saw them a few months ago and they rocked out like they were just starting in the biz. Tommy was killing it just like in this vid.
Awesome song! Saw Styx many years ago. Excellent concert.

Styx is very good at playing to the crowd. They always put on a great show.
Always ♥️
Definitely one of the hottest bands of the 1980’s!
This is 1 of my unofficial theme songs at the moment. 👍👍
I almost always prefer the studio version better, but this is better! What a way to open a concert.

One of my sister's favorite bands.
STYX is awesome 😺👍🏼🤛🏻
I got a chance to see them live at the state fair about 10 years ago and what a great show. They still rock it. ✌👍
Took me back to the early 80's. Thanks for the memories.
Watch this same song done with Styx and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra.....you will like that....the kids are amazing
I think the live version is much better
Thanks for playing it. I enjoyed it.
How nice of you to decide to review my favorite song from my favorite band. And on my birthday!
Coincidence....I talked him into it the other day....Happy Birthday🎂
Happy birthday 🎂
Happy Birthday Carla 🎂🎉🎈 My birthday is tomorrow

❤❤ still love that sound. Great band!
This was one of my favorite Styx songs. Listened to it a lot in the early 90s. But they were awesome in concert, too. Not all 80s bands did well live.

THE BLONDE GUY SINGING WAS ALSO A PART OF THE SUPER GROUP DAMN YANKEES WITH NIGHT RANGERS JACK BLADE, TED NUGENT WITH THE POPULAR SONG "HIGH ENOUGH"
those guys were great......they seem to be having fun with that song
Styx has been great for decades now and should be hall of fame material. That damn mister roboto is clearly in the way of their induction
Check out "Man In the Wilderness" where Tommy Shaw sings about being on the road.

Styx is great band.
I just saw Styx in concert this summer. Still awesome. The other folks are right about Tommy Shaw.
I believe I had this song on their album paradise, snow blind and renegade are the album too
That was from ‘99 show in Chicago ending the reunion tour.. great show.. keyboardist is a silly good singer
Aged and even more refined :)
I love this band
I love STYX, I love the song, but I personally prefer the studio cut over the live version.
However, the live version ROCKS!!! 🎸🎸🎸

The live version is actually better the studio and video version. Tommy Shaw absolutely rocks every single time.
Thank you, I agree .... He really puts on a show
That was better than the studio version. It's a really fun song from the 80's. Yes, it probably got used in a few movies.
My favorite song by Styx will always be ''Suite Madame Blue'' now I want to request for the bingo ball the band Triumph - ''Lay It On The Line'' or their song ''Fight the Good Fight''
They always have to much fun on their hands all the time they are singing.

Just had to get that one off my chest.
Love ir
As a completely different feel from Styx, you could try Boat on the River - mandolin, accordion, double bass - awesome.
I see a smile 😋
This was the original members before all the crap hit the fan.
Kenny Payne the original drummer had died before this was made

Heard a crowd, saw it was a live version, and hit pause. That's all for me, folks.
well you request. what you please ....I pic what I like
free to go watch a studio version anytime. you please to
I have a idea for a band to check out they weren't a big name band but they did once hit number 1 on the billboard Christian music chart
The band was called Scarlet White
RIP Spenser Minor
This appears to be from one of their mid-90s reunions.

T Shaw w/his Hamer Explorer.

you so crazy
Have you heard of Todd Agnew? Check him out.
When did David Spade become lead singer of Styx? Jk, all time great song!
Lol
I've said that for YEARS! If they ever do a Styx movie spade will star.
You should have listened to the in the shower version 😆
sad to say but their studio version sounds much better to me... listened to it a whole lot as a young person
