For me this is by far VH's best song. Its an almost perfect hard rock song. The bass, drums and guitar are all in sync. And while he wont' win any singing contests, David Lee Roth's vocals just fit with that hard rocking sound.
Imagine our parties in the 70s. This amazing music was being played along with many others like led zeppelin, supertramp, rush, and just soooooo many more. Parties were amazing!
When this album just came out, my brother's best friend Brian had just broken his leg and could not get around. He asked me to ride my bike to the record store in the New Sudbury Shopping Center. I was around 12. I didn't know what I was buying. I just remember him giving me $2 to get it for him. When I asked the hot 18 year old clerk for the new Van Helen album, she was shocked at a young kid like me even new who Van Halen even was. (my mom's name is Helen). When I got back and we put the record on ... we were f'n blown away ! You have to imagine that we had never heard anything like this before ! Well, the next thing you know, the huge speakers were now outside on the porch and the whole neighbourhood was introduced to David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen !
trust me when I tell you. When everyone just heard that opening riff from Runnin. Everyone back then was like "WTF, is that?"". no one heard anything like that before and then everyone listened to the rest of the album and it was history. just groundbreaking.
First time I saw them in concert, they were opening act for Journey and I didn't know who they were. It was one of those OMG, who are these guys moments.
Having been a child/teen in the 70's.. with bands like Led Zeppelin, Rush, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Journey, Boston, etc.... we were hearing totally new sounds on a daily basis. It was the norm for my teenage years.. we had no idea what we were getting to live in and experience all the time at that time... the greatest decade of music came out of the 70's in my opinion. Glad I can say I've seen most of them live more than once. (wish I could say I got to see PF live... my one regret).
One underrated aspect of Van Halen is the quality of the backing harmonies of Eddie and bassist Michael Anthony in many VH songs. Please react to debut album Side 2 blues-based rocker Ice Cream Man. It's a catchy tune with suggestive lyrics.
I remember buying this LP and taking it home. My parents were away for the weekend, so I got on my drums and just cranked it up on one of those old stereos mounted in a huge wood cabinet. We had never heard anything like this. That was the great thing about rock. The greatest bands would produce seminal songs that changed how other people played after them. Van Halen was one of those few bands that was a serious influence to a huge number of other musicians.
When this was released, we had never heard anything like it. Eddie Van Halen (R.I.P.) laid the groundwork for future guitarists and Van Halen was the blueprint for metal from that point onwards - they picked up where Zeppelin left off. In concert, it was an energy that was incomparable. Good times....
I was in 8th or 9th grade when Van Halen released this first album and I was hooked. This song and "Cradle Will Rock" (from their 3rd album) are probably my two favorite songs. Both are evidence that a song can be kick-ass with a slower tempo. Enjoy listening to this band and then remind yourself that your parents probably had sex for the first time in a car while a Van Halen cassette tape was playing in the car's cassette player.
I fell in love with the band in 1979. A boom box in art class was blasting out the "train" horn And my life has had Van Halen in it since that day. I'm 59 now and I still have the 1st 5 albums. I listen to them frequently. Those truly were the best of times. What really spoke volumes about the band. The VH symbol was hand drawn on, the majority of my high schools students book covers, and or notebooks. It didn't matter who it was or what their taste in music was. Cowboys were rocking out to VH. Thanks for reacting to my all time favorite band.
I remember in the 80s, it was just an endless string of VH hits. Music videos were kind of new, and so you also got to see the band's live personality.
When they were kids learning their instruments, Alex actually played guitar and Eddie was on drums. Eddie had a newspaper route, though, and while he was away everyday Alex would climb on the kit and practice drumming. It quickly became apparent where each of their talents really lied. Alex christened Ed's guitar tone "the Brown Sound" for it's unique, warm feel.
I was 15 when this album came out. My bro from another mother had bought it and invited a bunch of us over to listen to it. We were BLOWN AWAY any Diamond Dave’s vocals and EVH’s guitar riffs.
My dude @ 4:02, "Hey yeah Crank that up Baby!" Echos of just about everyone who has ever heard this song, at one time or another. No truer true have ever been spoken! `nuff said Peace out
This was the teenage rage back then - it was so "new" that we didn't know how to act when we first heard it. After that, we'd play this tape (yeah, a tape) on our car stereos with the windows down on the way to Croatan Beach (in Virginia).
I was a young teen when this album came out. Was instantly hooked. I hoped over the next 30+ yrs that they could get it together and do a reunion tour but it was never meant to be. It would have been amazing!
I was 13 when this came out. In Los Angeles (where I grew up) 94.7 KMET used to play this tune RELENTLESSLY. You can’t imagine the reaction this sonic explosion of audio genius had on everyone in 1978. Tom Sholtz and Boston blew the world away in 1976 with their amazing songwriting and guitar tone but Van Halen blew up the universe. As a drummer,I can honestly say Eddie Van Halen was an absolute influence on me musically and rhythmically with his sheer balls and attitude. He played guitar like a man! God bless EVH-he is greatly missed and loved. We need more creative artists like him in the world-NOT AI !!!
Fellas, great reaction! Van Halen's best song is called, "Everybody Wants Some", so that Is what I recommend you hit next time you come back to the band.
Love this reaction. I was in 7th grade when this came out. Van Halen was amazing to grow up listening to, and as I got older, to watch live. Never saw them with DLR, only Sammy. Looking forward to more reactions from y'all to VH. I heard Kentucky got hit hard with devastating storms. Hope y'all are ok.
I mean what can we say about this amazing song at this point? And about the thunder that was Van Halen? With this album, Van Halen set the stage for the entire Glam-Metal era of the 80's...and they did it in 1978. They were the first ones. Them. Not Quiet Riot like Kevin DuBrow boasted (and whom came along a full 5 years later), but Van Halen. I mean, there ya go. Nothing more to say here, really. RIP EVH.🌹
I had this on 8 track . We had 12 inch speakers all over the old Ford Galaxy man we were doing it way back then, anyway we drive around got buzzed and wore that tape. Those were the days no worries . Iam 66 and still get a thrill from this song.
Hello 502, so everyone is going to suggest all their popular tunes, so here is a great "deep-cut" from Van Halen. "House of Pain" from their 1984 album, rarely talked about, great song, Alec's drums on point, Eddie freaking out on guitar, bass ripping and squealing Dave. Peace gentleman.
I still have this album! I have also seen them 5 times, each time was a fantastic show. This song was always one that in just a few notes you know what it is going to be. Always one to crank up at a party.
I never forgot the day my older sister bought me this album when it was released in ‘78. I dropped the needle on the vinyl, then my mouth dropped open………….
Guys, when you cue up VH……turn it up!!! Your ears will be forever grateful.❤️🎼🎶❤️🔥🔥🔥Vintage VH- best place to start…..especially live concert footage.🔥
Van Halen has many hits. There is one I absolutely love that never gets played or reacted to. It's called Finish What You Started and man is it awesome. I absolutely love it. Got to check that one out. There are others that everyone likes like Jump, Panama, Hot For Teacher, etc. However, the song I am recommending feels like they are just jamming in your living room or something, not over produced but still tasty if you get what I'm saying. Check it out, you won't be sorry!!
Great reaction to a great song. This led right into Eruption.. together, those first two tracks provided one of the best 1-2 gut punches in rock n roll history. I'll disagree with one thing tho, at this stage David Lee Roth was as bright a star as Eddie Van Halen. His larger-than-life persona and vocals were critical to the early success of the band.
You guys need to react to Queensryche - Take Hold Of The Flame (live in Tokyo '84), since Ryan likes vocals so much. Geoff Tate best metal vocalist of 80's metal (IMHO).
Late comment here, sorry: But since Eddie loved Led Zeppelin (along a few other bands), it might not be a coincidence that the first two albums were named Van Halen I-II, a were the Zeppelin albums. Moreover, if you compare 1st track from Led Zeppelin I - Good Times Bad Times - with this 1st track on 1st album, the melody and the lyrics do echo each other a little. My two cents.
The song that started American's to pay attention to hard rock on a grand scale. AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden all made strides because of them in the American culture.
Oh dang. That is me right now. Not to mention, this is one of the greatest Van Halen songs of all time. Plus, I love you guys so much. Van Hagar better though. React to "Right Now" if you don't believe me.
Not my favorite song by them. But no matter what song they do Eddie always brings it! David Lee Roth always shows his talent and personality. I would have loved to see them in concert... I am afraid to say which lead i liked best, yet. People are pretty passionate on both sides. 😄
You haven’t reacted to any Scorpions (IMO the best rock band of all time!) start with Still Loving You hell pick any song they’ve never had a bad song since they formed in 1965 and btw they still put out albums and tour! Klaus’ Magic voice came v from surgery and of course they told him you’ll never sing again, they were so so wrong! Also got to do Limp Bizcut Breakstuff😎 you guys do the best reactions and analysis and review band history great job!
Great band and song. Thankfully I was able to see them live in Vancouver numerous times. Prefer Roth over Hagar but still were great each time.Im gonna push the 🇨🇦 content if you dont mind. Big Sugar and Bare Naked Ladies are to bands you may want to check out. Thanks guy's.🙂
For me this is by far VH's best song. Its an almost perfect hard rock song. The bass, drums and guitar are all in sync. And while he wont' win any singing contests, David Lee Roth's vocals just fit with that hard rocking sound.
Make no mistake, Diamond Dave's powerful vocals and stage presence were an integral part of VH's massive success.
I was 17 when this came out - nobody sounded like Van Halen!!
Imagine our parties in the 70s. This amazing music was being played along with many others like led zeppelin, supertramp, rush, and just soooooo many more. Parties were amazing!
Here's a couple bangers, rarely requested. And the Cradle Will Rock, and Where Have All the Good Times Gone
I'm the One is a song they need to hear!!!!
Michael Anthony is underrated for his bass, but also his background vocals.
EVERY SONG on that album is amazing. Seriously.
When this album just came out, my brother's best friend Brian had just broken his leg and could not get around. He asked me to ride my bike to the record store in the New Sudbury Shopping Center. Well, the next thing you know, the huge speakers were now outside on the porch and the whole neighbourhood was introduced to David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen !
Besides Eddie being such a great player. He also was a great inventor. A lot of his inventions and ideas you will find on most guitars today.
trust me when I tell you. When everyone just heard that opening riff from Runnin. Everyone back then was like "WTF, is that?"". no one heard anything like that before and then everyone listened to the rest of the album and it was history. just groundbreaking.

LOVE THAT SONG
Damn. Sigh. Still just so LOVE Van Halen 1!! One thing I loved about Dave's vocals is he could talk a song better than anyone. Totally underrated.
"AIN'T TALKIN BOUT LOVE"
also on their '78 debut album is FIRE 🔥
Yeah Jennifer, absolutely. One of the most powerful songs I know.
No one could scream Like Dave. Dave was the consummate frontman performer. No one comes close.
cruising on a Friday night with the car stereo blasting sippin' some brews...... Life was simple and good!
1978 . Eight track tape told my buddy he shows up at my house and says who are these guys my favorite band ever since. Seen them in 84 GREAT TIMES.✌
I heard this for the first time while joy riding with my party pals in ‘78. Instantly hooked for life. Spicy classic rock, indeed.
Have you watched the video for their song, Jump? A bit of fun...and a great track!!
When this was released, we had never heard anything like it. Eddie Van Halen (R.I.P.) laid the groundwork for future guitarists and Van Halen was the blueprint for metal from that point onwards - they picked up where Zeppelin left off.

The local radio station played the entire album the day it released. Luckily I was off work that day and had an empty cassette tape...
Just do that whole album! One of the greatest debuts ever!
View from the 859. Got Cats! And VH kicks ass
I was 15 when this album came out. My bro from another mother had bought it and invited a bunch of us over to listen to it. We were BLOWN AWAY any Diamond Dave’s vocals and EVH’s guitar riffs.
My dude @ 4:02, "Hey yeah Crank that up Baby!"
Echos of just about everyone who has ever heard this song, at one time or another. No truer true have ever been spoken!
`nuff said
Peace out
I was 12 -13 years old when this came out, I was blown away and I have been hooked ever since
On Fire ..Mean Streets ..Unchained ..Romeo Delight
This is where it all began. 😁❤️
This song is hot as hell!
This was the teenage rage back then - it was so "new" that we didn't know how to act when we first heard it. After that, we'd play this tape (yeah, a tape) on our car stereos with the windows down on the way to Croatan Beach (in Virginia).
There are so many great VH songs to choose from! Maybe next go to "Ice Cream Man"? Or possibly "Ain't Talkin Bout Love" or "Feel Your Love Tonight".
I had this album on 8 track! And my boyfriend used to call me up and play these album and sing it too me.
I was a young teen when this album came out. Was instantly hooked. I hoped over the next 30+ yrs that they could get it together and do a reunion tour but it was never meant to be. It would have been amazing!
That whistle is Roth’s english police Bobbie whistle. he’d wear it around his neck on stage in the early days & blow it sometimes haha..
Ahh, standard at high school parties in the late 70’s. 😎
I was 13 when this came out. In Los Angeles (where I grew up) 94.7 KMET used to play this tune RELENTLESSLY. Fellas, great reaction! Van Halen's best song is called, "Everybody Wants Some", so that Is what I recommend you hit next time you come back to the band.
"I want some too"
That song is fire, especially in concert!
@@gerib4234 They are great live--I saw them in '82--but the song should be reacted to as the studio cut.
Opener from the 78 debut..It's a song they had prior to fame and fortune..Tune you would hear them play at back -yard keg party. .
Guys, sooo lookin' forward to more VH reactions!! "Mean Streets", "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love", "I'll Wait".... VanHagar is whole other discovery.
To a 70's kid, David Lee Roth was The Fonz of rock & roll
Love this reaction. I was in 7th grade when this came out. Van Halen was amazing to grow up listening to, and as I got older, to watch live. Never saw them with DLR, only Sammy. Looking forward to more reactions from y'all to VH. I heard Kentucky got hit hard with devastating storms. Hope y'all are ok.

I went to there Concert in 1984 it was awesome 👌
I remember my friend and I walking around outside with this song cranked on my boombox -- good times...
I had this on 8 track . We had 12 inch speakers all over the old Ford Galaxy man we were doing it way back then, anyway we drive around got buzzed and wore that tape. Those were the days no worries . Iam 66 and still get a thrill from this song.
One of my favorites!
David Lee was real shiny and very flamboyant - kind of like Liberace. That's what I remember about him.
One of my fav VH songs, also Ain't Talkin Bout Love, Little Dreamer, You Really Got Me
I was there .... amazing !
You dudes rock🤘🏼 More Van Halen, yeah DLR sang the he’ll outta them songs. How bout ‘I’ll Wait’ 1984 record. Peace
Glad you liked it. Try Children of the Sun by Billy Thorpe, should be right up your alley.
Thank you!! My favorite Van Halen, this song is amazing
Yes Van Halen
Guys, when you cue up VH……turn it up!!! Your ears will be forever grateful.❤️🎼🎶❤️🔥🔥🔥Vintage VH- best place to start…..especially live concert footage.🔥
Ya gotta hear Van Halen’s 11:05 ‘Everybody Wants Some’, from the Women And Children First album!!!
Check out "And The Cradle Will Rock", from Women and Children First.
Cool. Hope you are all safe. Thanks
I always thought Van Halen's first album was their best. When it came out Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing blew everyone away.
I pray that you guys are all ok and I pray for all the people who have lost friends and family........ God bless you ❤️✌️
Love rocking with you guys of 502. Great video. ❤️👀

Patty Smyth singing Whole lotta love on David Letterman live would be nice to see.
Great song! Try “Panama” - it’s a banger!
Their best IMO
You guys need to react to Queensryche - Take Hold Of The Flame (live in Tokyo '84), since Ryan likes vocals so much. Geoff Tate best metal vocalist of 80's metal (IMHO).
Love seeing you guys headbobbing to music from my generation!
I thought it was a train sound too😂
LIGHT up The Sky...Hang em High
Great song of choice, my friends!! 👏🏼 If you want another VH track that BANGS, check out Summer Nights (album version)!! 🔥👍🏼
Listen to Hocus Pocus by Focus
They definitely are not "classic rock" they were in a class of their own. Never was and never will be any band like them ever!!
I always thought the the beginning sounded like an air raid siren.
Thank You guys great song .Would love to hear what you think Emerson. Lake Palmer .From the Beginning .
🔥
fiiiine im subbed hahaha love this channel more glam/hard rock lads

The song that started American's to pay attention to hard rock on a grand scale. AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden all made strides because of them in the American culture.
I'll Wait is another great tune to react to. Just a suggestion.
Check out : Unchained - Van Halen.
As you guys say....It's Fire !
Do more Van Halen but with Roth that's the real Shit
Oh dang. That is me right now. Not to mention, this is one of the greatest Van Halen songs of all time. Plus, I love you guys so much. Van Hagar better though. React to "Right Now" if you don't believe me.
Van Hagar can't hold Van Halen's jockstrap.
His voice could not hold up live, saw 3 times.M Anthony carried him... Good but not that good.
Actually formed in 1972.
You should also listen to the Sammy Hagar song Heavy Metal
Not my favorite song by them. But no matter what song they do Eddie always brings it! David Lee Roth always shows his talent and personality. I would have loved to see them in concert... I am afraid to say which lead i liked best, yet. People are pretty passionate on both sides. 😄
Senior year graduation party...

David Lee Roth✌
