Was listening to this this in Basic training not long after it came out. Every one in the dorm stopped what they were doing and started singing along.

1st track off the 1st Van Halen album in 1978... This was a record that was released in the height of disco. Rock music was just uncool at that point and everybody wanted dance music. And in that scene, Van Halen debuted from California w/ a rock sound that sounded fresh & energetic... it sold 10 million copies and made Van Halen superstars. Nobody expected this L.A.-based band to do anything, but they set the stage for the 80's rock scene to dominate.
It was another 5 years before the Cali band Quiet Riot followed Van Halen w/ a #1 record 'Metal health' in 1983, then Motley Crue had a hit w/ 'Shout at the devil'... They all came after the massive success of Van Halen.

I never thought he was talking literally about the devil. He's a loner, a drifter, but he is content with that life. That's my interpretation of it

I liked both of your opinions on what the song means. Once a song is released it doesn’t matter what the writer intended. What matters is what you get from the song. Good job. 👍

Massive Van Halen fan. You won't go wrong with anything on the first album, and the live show from Oakland, during the Fair Warning tour in 81,' will give you a sense of how powerful they were live. Then, when you get into the Sammy Hagar era, the live album "Right Here, Right Now," is a way to hear the chemistry with Sammy on vocals.

One of their biggest contributions to rock n roll. It really stands out as something only Van Halen could have brought into existence.

If a person is “running with the devil,” they are enslaved to him and definitely are not free.
This LP dropped the same year I graduated from high school. Nobody had ever heard
anything like it, especially Eddie’s guitar solo “Eruption.”

Sometimes a song does have a very deliberately expressed meaning written by the artist however the artist knows that although this song means something specific to them, they’ve written it in a way that allows for everyone to hear the same song but have a unique experience listening to it. Occasionally the deliberate meaning was for individual interpretation.

This song is a great example of Eddie's talent as a rhythm guitarist. It shows in every song, but I think because there isn't a real shredding solo in this song, it is more obvious, to me anyway. DLR's vocals are the real standout of this song. Those controlled shrieks are pretty impressive for a vocalist who didn't have the greatest range. What David did right he did better than anyone else. I think it would be a little challenging for most singers to duplicate that. You should check out Ain't Talking Bout Love next. Really anything off of the first two albums will be Complete bangers. They have SO much great music tho. I don't even think you've touched on the Van Hagar days yet! Also, I think Crys may have been talking about the bass. It's the opening sound of the song right after the car horn sound.

Yes he is alone and has nobody waiting at home but he is leading a reckless life. Having a wife and kids brings stability and responsibility where you can’t lead a crazy lifestyle. Since he has nobody to be here for he leads a reckless life that some will say that boy runs with the devil.

Always sounded like somebody trying to justify how awesome his life of decadence is, but he really doesn't believe it in his heart. Like he knows it's a path to ruin, and he can't do anything about it. Need to react to "Right Now" official video. Van Hagar era.

Let me tell you a story. There was a young man in Evansville, Indiana named Jim Gilles. Born in the late '60's he was introduced to rock'n'roll music at a very young age. By his high school years he was in and out of trouble due to his addiction to drugs, alcohol and rock'n'roll. Some of his friends were born again believers in Jesus Christ and were witnessing to Jim urging him to be born again. Then one night in September 1980, Jim attended a Van Halen concert. He was standing 5 feet away from the lead guitarist, studying the band and the reaction from the audience. As Jim was watching David Lee Roth prancing back and forth on the stage making obscene gestures, suddenly Roth stepped forward and shouted to the audience "NOT EVEN GOD CAN SAVE YOUR SOUL AT A VAN HALEN CONCERT!", to which the audience erupted with cheers and desiring more of Roth's blasphemy as they began to play their hit song "Running With The Devil". Jim was shocked and appalled by both Roth and the audience that he cried out to God to deliver him. Immediately Jim Gilles was saved, delivered and born again at a Van Halen concert and is now a street preacher, filled with the Holy Spirit and a desire to see the lost come to faith in Christ.

To me it's about a guy who is a young fool excited about getting into the criminal life at first. I can buy this and do that with hardly any effort at all, and I can get chicks because they love dangerous men who flash easy cash.
Then as time goes by he starts to see how empty, pointlessly dangerous and ultimately lonely it is, but by then he's in too deep to get out.

Why is she reacting? She never offers her opinions freely and with enthusiasm. It's obvious she either doesn't want to do the reactions or she does not care.
She reminds me of a spoiled little western princess, that thinks that she deserves the best of the best. Now she has to "settle" with the guy in this video, and the life that he can provide.

Outside family life on the road you live crazy sinful drunken drug sex life. Sex is made for Family life but one one covenant. The road has all the temptations for the Men. Running with the Devil is a crazy life. Some people choose it but some obey God.
