I watched many videos on DIY concrete slab work, this is the first video I watch where you joined the original slab by way connecting with rubar to new slab. Great idea.
Really enjoy watching your videos. I labored for my Dad, who was a bricklayer, when I was a kid. Unfortunately he kept me so busy lugging and hauling tools and materials and keeping the job sites cleaned that I never got a chance to actually learn the trade. He was an artist with his trade like you guys but it was always just him and me doing the work. I wish I made the effort to learn more when I could have. Your videos bring back good, but back breaking, memories. Going to extend my own driveway in Louisiana 10' X 40' myself with my 32 year old son after watching your videos. Wish me luck!
Super video. Time lapse makes it! Great looking finished product. When I move back to SoCal and need some concrete work done, I'm gonna definitely keep you in mind!
Hello David ;-) I just want to say that i really luv your video's.. The team & your boys do awesome work & i've learned so much from the video's & i'd like to THANK U ALL. We are doing a Patio & driveway this summer.. Just need to get a few of my friends for help.. Cheers from Welland Ontario, Canada ;-)
If people paid for the wheelbarrowing in I wouldnt mind but people really never wanna pay a good price. Im glad you can find the clients that do so especially on something this size which seems relatively small
Great video! It's nice to see other parts of the world do different things according to climate. Up in Northern Ontario you have to dig deeper and have different layers of stone for proper drainage of water. I wish my driveway was this easy. Lol
Nice work, David...you all make it look so easy. I've watched enough of your videos now, that small concrete projects around the house would be much easier...and if the need ever arises for a larger project again, I know what questions to ask, and what to look for in a contractor...so I don't have the same nightmare having concrete work done around the house again. Thank you for sharing your experience! :o)
Man if you could come to Europe to do a job I would most definitely be the one hiring you. I really like your stamped concrete work, wish I could find someone stamping with those mats. Decorative concrete here is something completely different
Concrete finisher here from the suburbs of Chicago... I enjoy watching your videos because it's cool to see how other contractors do the same work. One question.... why don't you own a skid loader? Or you couldn't use it to remove the sod because of plumbing?
Well a lot of the jobs I do don't require a tractor. They don't fit in a back yards. There's storage, maintenance, and liability. As little as I need them I'm better off renting.
Odell Complete Concrete Gotcha. You do real nice work. I like how you pay attention to all the little things. We always talk about at work how much nicer jobs turn out when you do that.
I want to do a 16 x 30 foot slab/patio behind my house. i will use it for entertainment and build a gazebo and a paver stone wall, fire pit and a small bar. I plan to do everything myself but how far deep should my slab go down bc i am here out in the western burbs of Chicago w the cold temps in the winter? I am on a tight budget so obviously the more shallow I can go the better. LOL. Thanks guys. Great video's !!!
Hey Dave, have you contemplated implementing a moisture barrier underneath the slab on top of the sub base on your concrete projects. It really makes an impact in preventing water absorption from the underside of the substrate.
Screed first, edger, then bullfloat, finally hand trowels. Many people have told me that there are correct times to use each of these tools. How do you know when to use which tool?
Nice video. I'm surprised you don't compact the soil before pouring. Adding that concrete slab will cause that soil to settle and the joint where the slabas abut will be uneven.
yeah for this job the soil was already pretty dense and packed. We just gave it a water down to help with compaction and it seemed to do the trick but that wont always work, also we put steel in the existing concrete driveway with the addition to reduce movement
Thanks for the video. I noticed you don't put any base material down first. Can I get away with that in VA? I want to extend my patio where the builder used gravel under the concrete. Thanks!
Congratulations you just won a Odell Complete Concrete stylus ink pen. Where should I mail it? Piece a cake at a new house, No landscaping, sprinklers. This is the time to do it.
5429 W 1100 N, Fountaintown, Indiana 46130 Thanks! I'll pick up some Tshirts in a bit. I think a concrete driveway would raise the value on this house we're moving into in a week. I bet the tools would sell on your site too.
You do a really good job, but it would help if you gave a little more detail about each step of the process. I noticed you use the bull float, edger and whatever the tool is that cuts the 2" right down the middle but after some time you go back over it doing different things. How long do you wait? What are you looking for? when do you use the broom? how long do you have to keep wetting the concrete? Thanks!
Can you make a pro link or is there a face book group on how to price or how to manage employees? You’re well practiced in many ways in this field. I think what I’m asking about has a demand so I’m curious if you have anything like I’ve described?
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. You mentioned this may be easier for DIY if it is done in 2 pours. Can you post the details on how to do this in 2 pours? Would it be much different if the 2 pours were done 8 or 10 days apart?
Sure I can. 8 to 10 days shouldn't make difference. Make sure you use the same concrete material each time, and the same amounts of water. Otherwise it may dry a little different in color.
What are the details if you pour half the job one day and half the next? Do you need an expansion strip, or dowels for connecting, or just treat it as a control joint?
Thanks for putting this up. Drilling the rebar into the existing slab is a great tip What thickness do you use for concrete to support vehicles, and will the thickness you use depend on the concrete's MPa?
I’ve done 4 concrete driveways/ patios with the help of your videos but i need advice on this one!! Customer wants the new slabs and the original driveway & sidewalk(after OG driveway is repaired) to be matching in an all dark grey color
I know very little about concrete and I have some questions. When and why do you put gravel down first before pouring concrete? For this scenario, what concrete did you use and more specifically what psi?
Another great video! I have noticed, though, you do not use gravel as a base inside the form boards in any of the videos I have watched. I remember doing concrete with my Dad as a kid, we always put gravel in the bottom. Is that bad, or unnecessary?
I think it's a location thing. It seems in California they often pour right on compacted soil where in northern climates with more rain and colder winter temperatures the gravel is required to allow water to drain and to prevent heaving due to moisture and cold temperatures.
First off MR.Odell, I love your video,s you,ve inspired me to want to go ahead and get my garage built before winter sets in, im going for a a 12ft wide by 20 ft long, with a 4 inch deep slab of concrete, I see you always put up your forms first, along with the string, I guess that's to make sure your dead on straight,im thinking ill need to get myself a level to make sure everything is even and all one height, this garage is directly next to the house, I was going to make 3 forms and let the house be the 4th, and pour the concrete right up against the house and in fill in to 4 in. but I have a old bush that has to come out, which is rather big and fat as hell, I know that's going to kill me, somewhat as I suffer from spinal stenosis, but I have to get this done, I inherited a very exspensive automobile that must be garage kept, wether it ends up with a roll down door, or 2 swinging doors which ever doesn't matter, do you build small garages by chance ? just had to throw that out there, if you could give me a price on the slab job and the garage both I wouldn't getting an est. from you for this job, please message me back ill be checking back, otherwise ill call you , to talk more, in any case, do you have any other tips for a very ,I mean A VERY FIRST TIME CONCRETE AND GARAGE BUILDER, need any advice or asst. all that I can get is and would be greatly appreciated Sir, keep the video,s coming, there awesome, they put a FIRE under my ass, LOL im 48 yrs old with a shot lower back, but I have to get this done, dear God I must get this done before its too cold , thanks MR.Odell, take care, William
I do a lot of this work here in U.K. Mabe is different in USA but why don't you put some hardcore down and compact it before you lay cement laying it down on soft soil it will crack over time. Hardcore Re-bar cement that's how it done. But u will probably say I'm talking bull .
no dont put it in the wood, just lay in on the ground and pick it up when you start pouring the concrete should be atleast 6 inchs away from the wood on the other side to give the concrete room to wiggle
Wouldn't it be better to redirect the sprinklers to the side of the new slab? At my last house the entire bottom half of my driveway was all messed up... caving in in places, crumbling in others. When I got it redone they found that one of the sprinklers on the SIDE of the driveway had gotten a leak under ground. And all of that moisture got soaked up in the dirt/clay under the driveway. It was so bad that when they drove one of the heavier trucks in the entire curb just went straight down into the soil... and that was no small piece of concrete. So, I had to have that removed and replaced also. All of that from a sprinkler at the side. I would think a faulty one under the slab would be even worse. You're the expert though.
Great video! Just wondering what are your thoughts on on doing a driveway extension in colder climates? I live in Canada want to make a 20ft x 10ft extension. How thick would the concrete need to be? Is concrete bought from the big box stores good enough or do you need specialized concrete for driveway application? Any suggestions would help

how's that concrete holding up?
Odell Complete Concrete What do you mean?
David, you should have broke the curb & gutter, made the the parkstrip an aproach, 3 cars could drive in from the street. Great job like always.
The approach would have went across neighbors property line. Not legal.

Screed first, edger, then bullfloat, finally hand trowels. Many people have told me that there are correct times to use each of these tools. How do you know when to use which tool?
It all depends on how the concrete looks and feels i do need to make videos about this kind of thing to help people understand concrete more.
I think my contractor is one of the people that disliked this video. He thinks I am going to do my driveway myself.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Probably a general contractor
I love this channel LOL
Glad to hear!

Nice video. I'm surprised you don't compact the soil before pouring. Adding that concrete slab will cause that soil to settle and the joint where the slabas abut will be uneven.

Doesn't get much better than that! That was also smart, just wheel the concrete a couple of metres and avoid the risk.

Let rebar stick through the forms? Or drill the concrete and add rebars?
GOOD LEARNING VIDEO ...
Thanks for putting this up. Drilling the rebar into the existing slab is a great tip
What thickness do you use for concrete to support vehicles, and will the thickness you use depend on the concrete's MPa?
I use 4" deep for light vehicles. 3000 psi
Ok thanks :)
Good job!
TY
I’ve done 4 concrete driveways/ patios with the help of your videos but i need advice on this one!! Customer wants the new slabs and the original driveway & sidewalk(after OG driveway is repaired) to be matching in an all dark grey color

Odell Complete Concrete any experience with the flocoat or quikrete resurfacer with a dye?
What do you do about the wet concrete that spills over on to the driveway and side walk how do you clean that off so well?
Wet sponge while concrete is still wet.
I noticed now gravel was layed. Not questioning your work, just learning. Is there a reason for that?
I know very little about concrete and I have some questions. When and why do you put gravel down first before pouring concrete? For this scenario, what concrete did you use and more specifically what psi?
3000 psi
I didn't use a gravel base , I mixed the gravel with cement and sand

Sure give me a call, and we can talk it over.
Looks real nice I always thought you have to use expansion joint strips against the old concrete can you let me if I have to
Thanks
Depends if you want it to stay connected at the same level or not
Thank you for getting back to me
nice job but what about the space between the slab and the grass on the left side?
That is the neighbors property
Can you make a video on how to grade and frame up the pour? Step by step
Your videos are so helpful . You guys to good work
TY
What kind of concrete are you using and how do you deal with an uneven pre-existing driveway?
Was there a slight dip in that slab down the middle? it kinda seemed like there was. 5:58
I think its a optical illusion
When do you normally put on expansion joint strip when pouring against existing slab?
Just wanted to say great video.... and hi from Pa...........
TY
nice video. Why didnt the owner want the curb cut so they could back staright out? Are there laws or permits you need?
Because it would have went into the neighbors property.
I do a lot of this work here in U.K. Mabe is different in USA but why don't you put some hardcore down and compact it before you lay cement laying it down on soft soil it will crack over time. Hardcore Re-bar cement that's how it done. But u will probably say I'm talking bull .
Perfect weather year round
yea it sucks up here in Montana especially during the winter.
Time to hibernate
Great video! Had a quick question why was there no need to compact the dirt before pour?
I water and gravity compacted.
The dirt seemed solid.
after drilling holes into the existing concrete and putting the rebars in, where do you stuck the other side of rebars in? the wood?
no dont put it in the wood, just lay in on the ground and pick it up when you start pouring the concrete should be atleast 6 inchs away from the wood on the other side to give the concrete room to wiggle
Odell Complete Concrete ok, thanks. how do you check the pressure of the sprinkler before pouring the concrete?
Turn the sprinklers on
HI Odell ... do u ever do "suspended" concrete floors?
I have in the past , nothing on video, but you can see it on my website.
is a gravel and sand base only for foundation applications?
You can use base anywhere, it depends on native soil and weather conditions if it a necessity or not.
So, I had to have that removed and replaced also. All of that from a sprinkler at the side. I would think a faulty one under the slab would be even worse. You're the expert though.
Then the sprinklers would be watering neighbors yard.
The line can be terminated somewhere in the backyard.
Great video. Very informative. Question: how do you match the color of the new concrete with the existing one?
The concrete will cure out a lot lighter within the next 30 days. Most likely will never match do to the aging process.
What size wood did you use for the frame?
2x4
Thank you! I’m about to give it a try here in Louisiana
GL
Great job. Thanks for the video
YW
thanks for this video, may I ask how deep is this concrete you just pulled, 4 inch or 5 inch ? thanks

great job brother 🖒 but what's up with mr. Mcfeely next door😂😂
And the owner mr. Roper comes out with his white shirt and shorts
I don't know.
TY
Could I do this even if my water main line runs along the side of the driveway?
Sure as long as its not leaking.
Thanks.
