Just got done installing my trailer lights following your directions. 2008 RX350. Worked perfect and lights all working properly. Used a trailer cable from Harbor Frieght for $7 and all was smooth sailing. Thanks guys for doing this.
Excellent video........worked liked a charm........but rather surprised all the panels had to be removed I tried just the side panel and could not get it out ty .........................you are teaching your son well Great Job!
Nice that you let the boy actually use tools to help. But the moment you destroyed the factory wiring harness, by cutting off the multiple connector, you lost me. The trailer tow harness can be purchased with the correct connector, to plug in without cutting.
I did buy the correct factory wiring harness off Amazon 4/2019 for my 2009 RX350. It was $43. It is part 08942-48870-BB. Thanks for posting this. I only had to remove the left side trunk pop up storage door. My car does have the factory towing package.
If you want to avoid cutting wires, you can use the harness for a 2001-2004 Ford Escape (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000K2PTD6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1). It was $7.00 instead of $43.00 and worked right out of the box. I believe it will work for any 2004-2009 RX330, 350 or 400h with the tow package (mine is 2006 RX330).
@@reef37 Yes. It was a super easy install. I ran mine through a grommet in the trunk floor near the connector and then ran it over to near the hitch with zip ties.
3:30 Since this video is intended for newbies (pros would never watch this), this section here might warrant a bit of discussion as to why you're silently, without explanation, snipping a factory connector. For anyone reading this, it appears that this is Toyota's provision at making it easier to just plug-and-play trailer plug using their expensive $45 adapter rather than cut, crimp, identify wires, etc. I'm not a fan of snipping factory connectors, if it can be avoided, so I think I'll go this pricier route. It's probably $45 vs $15 or so. Thanks for the video!
Hey! Thanks for the video. It was very informative. I'm looking to get a trailer harness for my RX350. Does your Lexus have a towing package installed? Also what is the part number for the wiring harness from walmart?
i just walked into walmart and found it on the shelf... if i remember this harness was the only option. you might have to google it ...but there are companies now that make a plug and play version ....
Sir. I have a question. I have a 2016 RX 350 and want to tow a travel trailer. I know RX 350 has 3,500lbs towing capacity. Do you think my car can tow 3,000lbs of dry weight + 350 hitch weight + 200 lbs of water, so 3,550lbs in total? Some say it is too heavy, but the others say it is way enough for it. Could you please give me some advices? And any travel trailers I can tow? FYI, I have a wife and a daughter who really want a shower room. Thanks.
In Europe this same car has a towing capacity of 4409 lbs with trailer brakes. It’s up to u how far u want to push it. If your up and down in the mountains u could damage the transition do to overheating. I have personally exceeded the towing capacity by nearly double the US rating in the Texas flatlands. And I’ve seen people town very large boats. I’ve since bought a tundra. If You get in an accident someone might ask questions.
@@byung-ilchoiI have a commercial drivers license and have been towing over 70,000 lbs and at times over 90,000 lbs throughout my career. I can tell you this, these ratings, especially in the United States, are often settled on not by the engineers but by attorneys for these companies. Using a lot of common sense goes a long way. I could easily tow 400% more than what your vehicle is rated for with it, by simply watching the traffic ahead, understanding to stop sooner, staying away from the back of other vehicles, and going easy on the brakes when stopping (start stopping much earlier). Also slower acceleration to get up to speed will not tax your transmission or engine. It's all about just taking it slow and being patient. As long as you do that, you can easily tow 5,000 lbs safely. I've seen guy with Ford F350s tow bulldozers that weighed DOUBLE what the truck was rated to tow, but they made sure to stop much sooner, went easy on the brakes, accelerated slowly, and just took their time. I would also drive about 5 under the speed limit. You will be fine.
@@byung-ilchoioh also, if you are close to needing to change your oil, go ahead and change it before the trip, especially if it's a long trip. Also if you tow a few times a year, make sure you keep up on changing your transmission fluid at proper intervals. That transmission fluid keeps everything cool and as it gets older it breaks down and loses its ability to do that.
no. mine did not have it. i believe its a plug that all cars have. there might be a actual plug you can buy now that just plugs right in without cutting the wires like i did
Got it. I did not realize that the quick connect that the dealer sells is a newer item that hasn't always been available. You can still pretty much only get it at the dealer too. I found several videos like this one. You still have to take out all of the storage bins to access though. Thanks for the video it was very helpful.

I have u-haul install the trailer hookup and wiring. I wouldn't want the wires go through the lift-gate while towing.

Factory part and wire harness was not available when we made the video…it came out 2 years later…. Some type of Toyota decision I’m sure

I'm surprised there is not a plug and play wiring harness
Where did you run the wire through the trunk to get under the car?
just through the trunk and under the lift gate when closed. it works great and stays clean. just like the video.

I guess I am missing why you cut off the quick connect and don't just use the quick connect harness from the dealer that costs $48
i tried looking for one at the time but found nothing.... so i went with a $6 connector from walmart.... you could do it that way as well

Why do you have to take out the fuse?
because i had to cut across wires... it might blow the fuse if u do not
