    Them’s some purty taters! (That’s Texan for, “Those are some pretty potatoes!”) Too bad about the middle plant. Kudos to the Potato Patrol, ever vigilant.

    Heavens, what a haul! I just harvested my first sets, two pots and two planters and didn't get that much, ROFL. Though, I did learn and will adjust my planting for next time. Molly was eyes on the ball for those potatoes, lol.

    Here in the U.S., our potatoes are still MAKING potatoes when there are flowers on the plants, so we don't harvest ours until all the flowers are gone and the plant looks like it's dead.

    My grandmother Hazel Kier loved to eat raw potatoes like Miss Molly and her daughter Donna my auntie would clammer on telling her mother she was going to get worms if she kept on eating raw potatoes. Is that an old wise tale or can you get worms from eating to many raw potatoes.?... Anyway my auntie's clammering has always kept me from eating raw potatoes regardless. You are seemingly the potato king is this an old wise tale?

    Wow 8 lbs from 2 plants. wonder what i am going to get from 120 potatoes I plant :) .just wonder why didn't you wait till the plant had died off some?

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Dori-ann. It's more usual to take main crop potatoes after the flowers have fallen. This potato was a second early and can produce a good return even when the flowers are still on the plant (earlies are the same). I don't think there is any hard and fast rule. The driver for me to harvest the potatoes when I did, 'there were no potatoes on the veg rack'. With 120 plants lifting one or two might give you a 'heads up' HGV

      Hello Jason. I have some main crop potatoes in a raised bed, the tops are about 4 foot tall and look lush, but as we say at Home Grown Veg, Its whats on the bottom that counts. Should be finding out over the next week or two. HGV

    what would happen if you waited till the vines died off? or Is it best to harvest Maris Peer while they are still flowering? by the way I read recently "If you find a man who grows his own potatoes; He's a decent sort of Fellow".

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Debera. The potatoes would probably be slightly bigger if I had waited until the flowers had dropped. The driving force was the veg rack. It had no potatoes on it. I was well pleased with the 8lb+ from the 2 potatoes. HGV

    Seems early. Could they have not gotten larger if left in longer. Mine are flowered and some even lost their flowers but are still nice and green like yours. Yours are certainly beautiful. I dislike using forks for that very reason. Awesome bounty.

    HGV, I've just emptied my first pot from many as my first try at potato's ever, they were potato's i bought from a farm shop earlier this year and a few went to seed so i planted them in 10" pots as I've watched you do many times, 2lb 7oz's i was jumping around my garden like a nutter the neighbours must think i'm mad lol, thank you very much for putting me on the potato path if it wasn't for your video's i would never have learned how to do this, I hope you and Molly are well.
    regards
    Steve

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Steve. I know I didn't mention it in this video, but the potatoes in this video that produced 4lb each were also not 'proper' seed potatoes. I kept them back from a bag we got to eat. It's amazing that a potato in a small pot of garden soil can produce so many potatoes. Your 2lb 7 oz is an excellent result . One thing that strikes me is at the outset you fill the pot with soil and plant a potato in it. When you empty out you have all the original soil ans half a bucket of potatoes. How does it all fit in there? HGV

    • @bowlocks
      @bowlocks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Morning HGV, boyed by my success i promised some potatos to a couple of people so i've just gone and chosen two pots to empty both had plenty of growth and had been in the pots for 14 weeks, nothing not even a Molly, they were shop bought King Edwards that had gone to seed both had the seed potato with plenty of growth but nothing else, the only thing i can think of is they were treated with a growth inhibitor, any ideas why this happened mate?

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After your 2lb 7oz that's got to be a big disappointment. I think growth inhibitor is a bit of a myth. If potatoes were sprayed with growth inhibitor the shops would have to tell us and nobody would want to buy or eat them. But in any case shops or farmers are not bothered what you do with your potatoes as long as you buy them. We are not going to outgrow the farmers with a few potatoes grown at home or in an allotment. If you had lots of top growth, perhaps not long enough in the pot, not enough water???? hard to tell. Good luck with your next pot it could hold the 'mother load'. HGV

    • @bowlocks
      @bowlocks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly is strange they all get watered at the same time so it cant be that and if they hadn't been in there long enough i would have thought there would still be a few small ones in there, anyway i still have loads to empty hopefully i'll get a few more, thanks for replying.

      HGV - I looked up that pub and it's in a place called Eastham, which from where i live is a 25min drive by car, or about an hour or so by bus. I have relatives who live in Eastham, small world eh as they say.
      I don't have a garden so i grow all my stuff in planters and raised beds, which is one reason i'm glad i found your channel, and subbed straight away.

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's about 40 years ago that I visited that pub. My sister lived at Eastham at the time. It had a Scottish theme. The bar staff wore tartan and the bar food was pezzas. A strange combination. Back to gardening. It's amazing what can be grown at home in pots buckets and beds and when summer is a distant memory we go to work on the soil. Your not far from the coast, no excuses, check this out. HGV th-cam.com/video/RHGF5fcsq64/w-d-xo.html

      HGV - Small world, as for the video, i have watched something similar in another video in which you got the Seaweed and the Leaves then shredded them up with the Garden Shredder or the Lawn Mower on the garden, great idea.
