Grow potatoes from bare root chits experiment, start to finish. Using rooted chits for a good start.

  • This is a start to finish experiment I tried some years ago. Perhaps it's time to give it another go, perhaps not. I started the experiment using chits that had started to grow roots before I removed them from the potato. I planted them in individual pots then moved them up collectively a few weeks later into a bucket to grow on.
Have you ever had a go at this. I couldn't make it work, could you?
Hope you enjoyed the video, this is home grown veg signing out.

To be honest I didn't expect this to work so wasn't that disappointed. Somebody else might be able to make it work but not me, this time.

Appreciate the "failure" videos. Since people grow from sweet potato slips, it almost feels like regular potato slips should work as well. By you doing the experiment for us, we know that it doesn't work, not just that we did something wrong.

The chits had no tuber to feed on until the leaves formed, nice try though.

I had chits grow without tubers attached this year. But they have to be planted differently. The crown has to be above the soil, so they can push out leaves right away and start making energy to support its own growth. Otherwise, the sprout has no energy available to stretch out through the soil to reach the sunlight.

They have to have some of the potato to feed on.

After the chits have leafed out they can support themselves with photosynthesis. Roots alone aren't enough. Good dog!

Hi Jim, Thanks for the video, was on my list to try. Great to see Meg, her throw toy, your flowers and that always present cup of tea, as I drink my PG Tips on this end. BTW, Having great success with the sarpo miras this year. Thank you for that! Lisa

Check out the guy from the channel Live on what you grow. He did this with chits and they grew.

    1. Sweet potato slips need a couple of leaves on them in order to feed the root, before planting.
    2. I noticed you were wearing long sleeves. If you are comfortable wearing long sleeves at that temperature, it's too cold for sweet potatoes. They are heat loving plants. They need consistently about 75-100° F (25-38°C) to truly thrive. Anything below 60°F (15°C) and the growth stops and time to harvest.

I read the Murdock story abt the Peruvian lady & wondered myself. Seemed rather impossible, but then again, maybe there's a method to the madness we don't know abt yet. Hope springs eternal, eh? ..lol. Thx Jim, for doing the demo. -- xxoo 💌🍒

I think the chits need the potato for neutriants to grow.

Maybe the little chits can't be planted too deeply. They don't have the energy to make it up to the sunlight and air. I think I'm going to jac free to give this a go, given a chance and some rooty chips showing up.

Meant to say. I'm going to have to give it a try.... my phone has other intentions on what I say.

I had some that had roots on the chips. Didn't try planting in this fashion. Glad I didn't after watching this video. Good information. Thanks for the video.

Interesting! If you try it again, maybe try to leave the top part of the chit out in the light, so it can grow leaves and get energy from something. After all, all those "I got potatoes in my compost pile from potato peel" claims have to have some basis, no?

Hello Dona. To be honest I didn't expect this to work so wasn't that disappointed. Somebody else might be able to make it work but not me this time. I have tried growing from potato peelings, another fail. With respect to potatoes growing in compost piles there's every chance they came from a potato inadvertently added to the pile. Jim.

Hello Mick. A lot of these types of experiment fail and those that produce a result usually produce a disappointing one. Jim.
