PNG: Peroveta (Prophet Songs)

The PNG Peroveta Singers of Canberra is a group of diaspora community members who share and perform the music of Central Province, Papua New Guinea. The videos are the group's song and dance performances recorded in the ACT in 2023 in response to the PARADISEC collections MG1 and IC1. The performance focuses on Peroveta (Prophet Songs) led by group leader Deveni Temu in various languages from Hiri Motu to Hula, Keapara and Mailu from the southeastern Papuan coast and over to Rarotongan from the Cook Islands.

I'm really proud of your group, beautiful singing of the peroveta songs, keeping our PNG culture alive away from our shores. Amongst the group, I think I have found a relative (Wari Verave), my late mother made a mention of her name when she used to talk about her family from Paramana. It's a great blessing for this group. Our relatives staying in Canberra, Australia. Beautifully singing some of the old Peroveta songs in the motu and hula language, Honestly I am touched by their singing though leaving away from their villages they strongly maintain their custom or culture as they explain the meaning of the song and sung. Amongst the group singing I have noticed my Aunty Igua Hila, ia ese ane e ladaisimu, Maru taudia raruosi na goada herea. Ane iboudiai na all sung beautifully.

Wonderful peroveta singing in the four languages, Motu, Hula, Mailu, and Rarotonga. I'm 58 now, a peroveta fan. Most of the songs are sung in Motu, and the song in the rarotonga language remind me of the past but are still sung to this day. Sadly, I don't hear much of this amongst the younger generation, though. 😢. Anyways, Thank you to the group and GOD bless you always, much Love.
