How To Knit a Sweater Top Down - Part 2 - How I Plan For & Knit A Sweater

  • In this video I continue my discussion about how I knit a sweater top down. I go through the process of picking the size of the sweater from the pattern to knit, what I think about as I am knitting and I detail my process for using the gauge that I have to make the sweater pattern work for me even if I do not match the gauge in the pattern. Come talk sweaters with me and see how I go about my process to knit a sweater top down that I will love!

    For the cast on/off: Tubular cast on and tubular cast off: I find them strong enough to keep their shape but also very stretchy to put the sweater on, they also work for hats and for cuffs (both of socks and sleeves)

      Good idea! I am not the biggest fan of doing the tubular cast-on, but I think I should get over it and do it anyways. It's such a small part of the process and that little bit of annoyance will make for a more enjoyable sweater in the long run! Thanks for the tip :-)

    Sleeve measuring is pain, but when right makes me one happy knitter 👌🏽 I find that measuring under your arm pit to the desired legnth at your wrist/hand, on a bottom up sweater works.

    I like the German twisted cast on for the elasticity. For the cast off, I like to use a knitted cast off. Put the single stitch from your right needle back onto the left needle. To work in pattern, if the next stitch to be worked is a knit stitch, then knit 2 together. If it is a purl, then purl 2 together. If I want the cast on to look like the cast off, then I use a provisional cast on, then pick up those stitches at the end, work one row plain,, and the work the ribbing with a knitted cast off for the neck edge.

It would have kept me from many demotivating situations. :-) Your videos make me dream and hope my husband will start knitting one day just because you motivated him. Thanks for your good job!
    I had to check out some cast on/bind off videos to find a name for what I usually do. (Funny: I am German and have never heard or seen the German twisted cast on :-)). So I normally do a simple long tail cast on and Jenny's surprisingly stretchy bind off. I've never heard of Jenny but I have been doing what she does for my whole knitting live. I’m sure other people have said this! But for cast on: Norwegian Long Tail. I use the Jeny’s bind off, but I continue with the same needle size as the ribbing and I find that does not flare. It’s also not as time consuming as other complex options.

    Stretchy cast on is very easy. I use long tail for just about everything and use my finger to space between the stitches and keep them even. The more stretch you need the further apart the stitches. I usually put my index finger and thumb onto the stitch on the needle so the new stitch can only butt up against my fingers. And the. I keep holding the stitches the same way and it keeps it really even and neat.

    Hey Caleb
    I discovered your podcast through Jody from the Grocery Girls. And just bingewatched them all. 😊
    I had the same problem, my cast ons where always to tight, even when I went up a few needle size. And then I discovered the German twisted cast on. Now I use this all the time, I cast on and knit with the same needlesize and it's perfect. For the cast off, I go for a 1 Stitch I-cord bind off, but I have to pay a lot of attention to do it loosely. I love the look and so does my husband.
    Have a great day

    Flax was also my first sweater. :-) I take measurements at bust, waist, and hip and increase or decrease as necessary to meet the measurement. Knitting to fit makes sweaters look so much better.
    I use a stretchy cast-on and stretchy cast-off. the cast-on is invisible but the cast-off does leave a slightly bulkier edge. I decided to call this a design feature. ;-)
    I knit sleeves one at a time and put stitch markers at each decrease as well as at the beginning of the sleeve portion. this helps me have identical sleeves.
    Writing everything down is essential.

    Firstly, I love this podcast so much. You are a wonderful breath of air. I always watch as soon as i get a free chance.
    Secondly, I usually use a provisional cast-on, knit until I get close to the end of the ball. Then go back to the cast-on and do a tubular bind off, using Snips n' Stiches tutorial: 1 knitting needle and a tapestry needle. It is an extra step, but getting that edge from tubular bind off is super satisfying and well worth it. If it isn't obvious, I also bind off all my hems with the same bind off method.

And keep up the great work--I am always happy to see you pop up on my subscription page! ETA: the bind-off I use the most when I want to have something stretchy but not too flared is (using same needle size): K1, K1, Knit those two through the back loop. Then begin the repeating: K1, K2tbl...and repeat until the end. Give you a little extra bit of yarn so it doesn't tighten up.

    As others have said, Jenny's Super Stretchy bind off and tubular bind off. With Jenny's I'll alternate the super stretchy with normal.
    If I'm just done with the sweater and want it off the needles, I'll just do a simple loose bind off with a needle 2 or 3 sizes larger.
    I almost never do top-down, but when I do, I'll read the comments on the ravelry project pages and do some googling/youtube research before committing to a cast on.

    Your fave target sweatshirt has set-in sleeves and your are making a raglan sweater. The way the sleeves come off the body will result in a different chest measurement, armcye height and body length that fits you well with each silhouette, i.e. set-in sleeve vs raglan sleeve vs a circular yoked sweater. I was drawn to the color work in yoked sweaters, but they never fit my shoulder shape very well. I have several beautifully made yoked sweaters that are epic failures bc of this. In an aha moment, I realized raglan and set-in sleeve construction work best for my body type, which is why I didn't own any yoked sweaters before learning to knit. Take your preliminary measurements from the same garment silhouette as the sweater you are knitting and you will be much closer to a better fitting garment. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!

    • @DrowninginYarn
      @DrowninginYarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good tip! I mainly used it for the fit of the chest as I didn't have any similarly constructed garments at the time. But I should update my desired measurements using sweaters I've knit now. Thanks!

    I had to pause the video at the end and type this. You're talking about enjoying the process of knitting and not seeing it as a race to the finish line. I relate to this so much. Sometimes when I see a pattern I get excited to start it but then, for a moment, I get pulled off the idea because I start thinking of how much time it will take to finish the project. How dumb is that?! Thank you for putting those end thoughts in this video. And thank you for the other videos as well. Great podcasts Caleb. Very informative,especially for beginner knitters. I use the yarn over bind off( not sure what it is called) Jenny's stretchy bind off seems very popular. I have knitted at least 30 sweaters for myself and I have to relearn every time I start a new one. It always seems overwhelming when you start but a good pattern is key. I enjoy top down seamless sweaters with a few key techniques. My most daunting sweater was a gansey sweater I knit last year. Just took it step by step...so glad I made it. So glad I found your podcast...GREAT JOB! If you enjoy the wooly types of yarn,check out Briggs and Little in New Brunswick,Canada. It's cheap so your US dollar goes a long way. CHEERS! I use Jenny’s surprisingly stretchy bind off but since I kno u don’t like the flair that that Bo does, I suggest when u bind off u start by k 1st st, yo then knit into 2nd st & Bo both yo & 1st k st. It’ll put more yarn into the Bo than it otherwise would have & it also doesn’t flair so bad either.

    Cast ons/offs for garments. I basically use tubular (Italian) cast on or bind off. If I'm lazy I'll use Jeny's surprisingly stretchy bind off or Very Pink Knits stretchy bind off. If it calls for i-cord, I use a stretchy i-cord bind off, which basically implements Jeny's surprisingly stretchy bind off into it.

    Casting on on a larger needle makes your stitches larger, not necessarily a stretchy cast on. The best way I know to have a stretchy cast on is using my forefinger to separate the stitches I cast on.
    Casting off, I either use the method in which you knit one stitch and knit2tog through the back loop or the sewn method.

      @@DrowninginYarn Very welcome... If you`re careful to keep it at the same looseness/tightness/gauge as your stitches it will stretch as much as your ribbing with no flare.

    I don’t know why, but I never feel like I’m on sleeve island when I knit sleeves. I do one at a time and use typically 9” circulars (chiagoo blue shortie set) , it’s much faster on the small need,es. I feel the same way about ripping out to fix mistakes - definitely part of the learning process.

    Hi Caleb, I'm really enjoying your podcasts! I have knit a few sweaters both successfully and unsuccessfully. I am still perfecting my process and it's nice to hear other knitters share their process. If I may also add a comment on your video editing. Your content is great but I am finding the number of edits (if that is the right term) visually distracting. Look forward to hearing more from you and your knitting adventures :-)

    Thank you so much for explaining and showing how to calculate stitches and dividing the needles size to make for a perfect fit. Ì never could understand it. Ì hate swatching too. A waste of time I thought. Ì just finished a sweater and it came out huge. Ìm frogging it. Spent too much money on the yarn. It would kill me to see it just hang around in my closet. Great podcast.

    Love your videos, as I am jumping into sweater knitting after a lot of scarves and hats. Best things, socks and sweaters! Would you consider an pure Alpaca sweater? I have read that it is light, much warmer than wool and fits well under jackets and coats in cold weather. Let us know you thoughts.... I found your channel as you were talked about on Grocery girls podcast.

      @DrowninginYarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for coming to watch! I honestly haven't knit with Alpaca though I bought a lot of alpaca yarn recently to knit a shawl! I would be hesitant to knit a sweater in it myself until I talked to someone more experienced in it (or found a pattern intended for alpaca) because I have heard it can grow a lot. I would assume that isn't a big deal in a sweater that is not intended to be fitted (maybe something a bit oversized or designed to be a bit slouchy). Unfortunately, I can't offer any more advice than that. Sorry!

    Since you are not afraid of math, check out Shirley Paden's book Knitwear Design Workshop. It will answer all of your questions. You can also get her class on Craftsy where she goes through the the math . She shows you in simple math how to determine how to taper accurately , how often to decrease/ increase and when. How to match the ribbing gauge to the main body even if it lace. You won't regret adding her book to your library or watching her class on Craftsy. (7.99)

    Hi, I really enjoyed your video! I do have a question, how often should you do decreasing and increasing for waist shaping so it does not harsh? Every four rows? Thanks!

    • @DrowninginYarn
      @DrowninginYarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the tapering, I do my decreases about every inch or maybe an inch and a half depending on how many stitches you want to remove. The goal is to make them spaced out enough that they aren't really noticeable. As long as you start soon after the underarm and decrease at roughly equal intervals, you should be fine.

    Loved this video! I’m knitting my sleeves two at a time, magic loop on my pink velvet sweater as I watch! For sweater cast ons (& hats)for ribbing, I recommend long tail tubular cast on. For sweater bind with ribbing, tubular bind off. Otherwise it depends on the pattern. I also use (Old?) Norwegian twisted cast on for a loose edge- more on hats than sweaters for non-ribbed edges. I did a tutorial on picking up for two at a time sleeves on top down sweaters on Knitting Posse TH-cam channel if that helps anyone! Totally agree that it’s easiest to knit both sleeves at the same time. 💙🙏🏼

    Hi Caleb! Greetings from Toronto. So happy for u (shout out from the GG girls!) ur channel will now grow expediently! For stretchy bind off’s, check Staci Perry on VeryPink who gives u an entire tutorial on various bindoff methods/how much(or little) they stretch including info on “flaring”. I found the Flax did not fit me as well and this, I believe, is because this sweater has no short rows at the back of the neck. So I did modify. I agree, my mantra is “fit as you knit” as well. Custom fit is best. Thanks for another interesting episode. Stay well. 🤗🇨🇦👋🏻

    I have a dumb question. How do you try on your sweater? Do you have to slip your stitches onto waste yarn every time? Or should I be knitting my sweaters on longer cables? What is the trick or magic hint? I am learning so much from your videos. They are very well done. Thank you!

    • @DrowninginYarn
      @DrowninginYarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! And it's not a dumb question! Some people slip their stitches onto waste yarn to try it on... it is a good trick that makes it easy to try on, but it does take time to do that and then to get the stitches back on to your needles when you are done. Another thing you can do is to buy stoppers for your needles if you have an interchangeable set... I have chiagoos and they have little stoppers that screw on in place of the needles. Then you can take your right needle off, place it on another cable and put a stopper in its place (and a stopper at the end of the new cable), knit half your stitches on the second cable and try it on that way. I hope that made sense. When you do this, you just have to be extra careful to not pull too hard and slide your stitches off the needle end.

    I just finished a crochet sweater and not too happy with it. I think the hook was small as when finished the sweater was a little stiff. I used baby sport so the yarn wasn't the issue as I knit a pull over vest and the feel was just fine , it was soft . Never really thought that a small hook wood have caused such a stiff feel.

    Very helpful especially when knitting for men! I use Alternate Cable Cast on and Sewn Tubular Bind off. Looks fabulous for 1x1 rib and works for 2x2 too as well. It doesn’t look quite so nice for 2x2 but this isn’t noticeable when you are wearing the garment. I find that if you size down a needle when working Jenny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off this reduces/eliminates flare but I still much prefer the sewn bind off for ribbing. If you are familiar with Kitchener it’s very similar. Thanks for the video. @elbeknits on Instagram

    Gentle suggestion: Emphasize the psychological awareness and acceptance you experience through your projects. We come here to learn more about knitting, but then discover you. Continue to include your personal stories and psychological insights as you demonstrate and explain. Zoom in on your face when sharing the personal stuff and remember to smile. Zoom in on the fabric and linger. Fabric is the main course, but the gals and guys will eat you up with a spoon. Make a million bucks.
