When I was 14 years old I was surprised at how little my father knew about life. When I was 21 my father was dead :( It'll be 40 years ago in less than 3 months and now my mother had dementia and is unlikely to be here to mark his passing. And I'm so very sad.
@@matoko123 I am very sorry to hear that. The smartest man I ever knew was my wife's father. He had active patents from WWII when he died. And if every mother-in-law was as sweet as mine was, there'd be NO M-I-L jokes. Both of them suffered from dementia before they passed, and that was the hardest thing to watch. Matoko123, all I can say is spend whatever time you can with your mom, and remember the good times, talk to her about those times. And be sure to tell her you love her. "Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions..." This is a huge one. Maybe not keeping away from them per se, but not taking their opinions to heart anyway. Many of the best things in my life were things I did without anyone else's approval.
It is not wisdom just facts gleaned from observing and thinking it all through. Do you remember that good friend of yours who had the dirt on everyone and the awful things they did? That person shared so much valuable info which kept you safe. Who do you suppose that person talked about when you were not present?
As an ICU nurse for 12 years, I took care of many many people near the end of their life. They told me over and over they wished they had spent more time with their family. Not one single person told me they wished they had spent more time at their job.
America is the only country where......if someone says "that's history"...... he means "thats irrelevant.". This is America's relationship with history.
They are almost all beautifull but the one on forgiveness is just amazing. "Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it"
"...tell the truth and you don't have to remember anything...." I love this as an elder person. But I laughed with joy at the wisdom of many of these quotes. And some of those that others have added to the comments are brilliant.
1:49 "If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man.” Twain had some really keen insight. I let my older brother live with me for over 6 years after he got divorced. It resulted in nothing less than envy by him. He became jealous of my success in life and I had to throw him out. I used my smarts at work to make the job easier for more than one co worker and they resented my level of intelligence and, as the years passed, even tried to "teach" me things I had shown them how to do. If I didn't have such a keen sense of self... A keen sense of humor... I'd have put a bullet in my head a long time ago.
And so I say: "Kindness often is paid back with contempt." I still believe in kindness, but this shows indeed the heart of mankind. As the Bible already says, that the human heart is wicked above everything and who can know it? No wonder we are all called to repentance. When we are honest about ourselves, we see so much to repent about. "Gratitude is a flower, that blooms in very few gardens". By Guido Gezelle, Flemish poet and writer. That stuck with me too.
@@lonewolf5238 Yes, that's weird, isn't it? We lived in Romania for a while. Street kids were everywhere, begging. We gave them something valuable: bananas. They started to recognize our car. But when we were out of bananas, they came against us. They were indifferent to others, who mainly ignored them. But to those, who showed greater kindness, they were mean. I get it, that they were disappointed, for they had their hopes up. But this is a fine example of how humans function. Also seen: when someone helps someone else out, some people think that means they have the right to treat that other person as in need of their education, like in treating them like children. When we went back home from Romania, I went ahead and searched for a place to live, whilst staying with another family for some time. When my spouse came back with the cats, they had been in their cages way too long and were dirty. I of course didn't know they were dirty, when I let them out of the cage. Mind you we were in someone else's house. My host found it necessary to openly reprimand me for making the other person's house dirty, whilst I was already carrying the cats to the bathroom. I was horrified by her belittling behavior. Although I really liked it, that she housed me for a while, her attitude towards me was despicable in my eyes. Never visited her again in my life. Am still upset, when I think about it.

Hello Patricia
How are you?
As a 79-year-old, I like the quote: "The fear of death follows from the fear of life. {One] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time." As it happens, I am not afraid to die. Apparently the reason is that I was not afraid to live. Who knew?!?!
Bravo!!!
I'm 75, and when I realized where and what I was doing wrong, and corrected it as best I could, death took on a whole new meaning...the fear was gone.

I watched the whole video with a smile. This man is so sincere, his words are ageless. Thanks for the great content. I have watched other videos of yours as well.
My favorite quote that isn’t included is: “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” This applies to whatever opinion you have. Always be humble enough to question if you are on the right side and prove it to yourself again and again.
To my mind, this quote has proved things to me many times over in the last two years. Love it.

Beautiful. I got my first taste of Wisdom at 3:57. We had volumes of Encyclopedia's. Colliers, Every Man's and Britannica. If we asked our father a question, he'd say: "I don't know. When you find out, come tell me". We found out. We were so CLEVER? It took a few years to learn that the old man was no idiot. He just kept on throwing us into the deep end until we learned to THINK for ourselves, and not rely on 'second-hand information'. Today I am financially successful, and retired, at 70.

"When I was 14 years old I was surprised at how little my father knew about life. When I was 21, I was surprised at how much he'd learned in seven years." My all-time favorite Twain quote.
The actual quote is "When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in 7 years."
Honestly, I don't know if she will know what you are saying, but it will be good for you and your heart. God bless, my friend.

I hope this helps in your time of need. I think your Mom did a good job of raising you! And now it's your turn to help her. Talk to her as if she were able to hear you, we just never know how much they understand. Again, God's blessings to you and your mother.

"Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it"
So beautiful and memorable that I had to write it down.
Couldn't pick a favourite...they're all spot on. Oul Twain was a wizard.
"...tell the truth and you don't have to remember anything...." I love this as an elder person. But I laughed with joy at the wisdom of many of these quotes. And some of those that others have added to the comments are brilliant.
Every kid /term needs to listen to this. Even adults.
And so I say: "Kindness often is paid back with contempt."
I still believe in kindness, but this shows indeed the heart of mankind.
@@gardenjoy5223 a close kinship to my favorite: "No good deed goes unpunished."
I loved them all. Some made me chuckle. I am of a certain age, so many were very relatable. I've always admired Mark Twain.
