What I did to my r69....bought some Harley fog lights, and reversed the arm holding lights. If yo don't have them reversed , you will dent your fender ( experience talking ). They look good on the BMW. They bolt right on.
Terrific conversion; very tastefully done. I have an R69s and R90s (for over 40 years) and am currently ironing out bugs in both. I must say I never thought about a motor swap but now you got me thinking! I would be interested to know how the handling, comfort and braking of the/2 frame copes with that motor>>>
Thanks! So far so good - the newer engines mount without significant modification. I haven't ridden a stock /2, but I don't think you'd find the handling or comfort that different. Some people use a modified /5 shaft, swingarm and wheel because they are worried that the /2 shaft drive won't be able to handle the additional torque. But, many, many people (like me) run the /2 rear. I'm used to drum brakes on bigger bikes and find the /2 double leading shoe drums to be pretty good. This type of engine swap has been done by folks for several decades now and there is a good amount of support and know-how online. Search for /2 conversion bikes. Good luck either way!
so yes and no: in this vid, I was using a fork from one of the singles - that one doesn't need any modification, but the rake and trail are different than the earles used on the twins and I felt like it negatively impacted handling. I've switched to the stock /2 earles now, and that one does need modification. The back of the lower brace on the fork needs to be flattened to clear the stator cover (but I like the handling better).
I used the /2 swingarm so the only conversion needed was the aluminum spacer plate that allows the shaft to reach and attach to the engine. They can be easily made, but Bench Mark Works sells them. If you want a converted /5 or /6 swingarm, Brock Downey (I don't have his contact info) seems to be the major player.
It starts easily with the kickstarter, the trick is to feel when the piston is on compression, and when the kicksarter is in the horizontal position bring it down fast, it´ll surprise you.
WOW nicely done. Getting ready to do a swap on the r60 that i have. I am really curious how you did the transmission. Did you make a spacer to link up to the old drive shaft? I'm trying to get a 1994 r100 engine which was the last year before they went to the new engine design.
Thanks! Yeah, it's just an aluminum spacer with the right bolt pattern on each side. Easiest thing to do is get one from Vech at Bench Mark Works for $92, but it wouldn't be hard to machine yourself if you have a mill.
You can! Each of these frames fits a little different, but on mine, all I did was replace the 3 bolts with allen heads and ground down the diameter of the top bolt a 1mm or 2 (and added a washer behind it). I use a ball-head allen wrench on the top bolt and it's no problem.

The frame is original - I don't know anyone making aftermarket /2 frames
