    I'm a 8 yo lady with severe osteoarthritis, and my daughter is 23. Because we haven't been able to find anyone else to do the work, we are finishing the interior of a two bedroom addition ourselves. It's been a learning process, that's for sure!
    This video will really help me with completing the work---between the bedrooms and the two closets I've got 5-6 spots to redo.
    Thanks VERY much!

    I'm doing drywall for our bedroom and I'm getting a few sporadic bubbles, nothing major. Kinda thought this was the solution but I googled my question and this video clip was in the results. Came here specifically, afterwards, to give you the view count and the thumbs up!
    Thanks for the tip, sir!

    Dude!!! Thank you for all your videos. I watch most of them. You should have a video that says if you want to tape and texture, just hire a professional. This blows. I bought $150 worth of drywall missing tools. Lesson learned. I suck at drywall. I have more mud on the floor and my clothes than I do on the wall. Lol. You guys make it look so easy.

      Keep at it. Best trick I learned is to use a sanding screen with a hand sander and using the flat edge to knock down seams. Used to go crazy trying to use an orbital or sanding block.

    Shannon, I have probably watched at least 100hours of your videos. I'm moving into a fixer upper -my first home, and I can't wait to tackle all the projects. As someone who has never done construction, aside from the occasional paint job here and there, I'm feeling a lot more confident about taking on all these new projects. Your videos instill confidence in me because you leave no stone unturned and you don't skip over the actual processes of doing it like most videos do to save time. Thanks for doing what you do!

    Thanks for making the video. Really useful as have a few bubble in a tape fixed yesterday due to me trying to get use out of the last part of some 45min mud which wasn't wet enough. I'll see if this fixes them.

  • @stodulskim
    @stodulskim 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    great fix, I was switching and testing all of the products, fibreglass tape, self adhesive mesh tape and paper tape, as a started fibreglass when sanding down was not too comfortable to work with (itchiness and such), and on the butt joints the mesh tape is thicker so decide dto stick with paper, but few bubble came up just now, over the area I have done, 4 came back, so not the worst case scenario, but initially i though of injecting the mud with syringe rather than cutting the section off, so thanks for this tip, thumps up from Europe!

      I agree. Little did I know, hanging the sheets was the easy part! I’m having nightmares about taping and mudding now! I’m on about my 4th sanding and mudding application and it still looks like a hack job. At this point I wish I’d just paid someone. The amount weekends and money I’ve sank into this shit, it would’ve more than been worth it. The TH-cam videos mislead me and made it appear much easier than it actually was!!!

    • @jazzride
      @jazzride 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used 5 minute ‘hot mud’ and the tape seemed stick better without bubbles.. switched to the 20 minute and now I’m beginning to question my sanity 😂

    • @jazzride
      @jazzride 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which brings me to another question: is it possible to treat a seam 4 or 5 layers for a number of days to the point that tape is no longer necessary?

    • @traviskramer9997
      @traviskramer9997 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jazzride I know this is an old question, but the short answer is no. Long term seams move/heave ever so slightly, and the tape is there to deal with the stretch movement. Without it, it will likely someday crack on the seam line. Obviously there are exceptions to this, like if you are putting tile or cabinets over the seam line. Then you'll never see it. But generally speaking you want tape or mesh tape over the seam.

    Exactly what I am running into. while repairing water damage to a ceiling. The drywall is ok but the tape came lose. I replaced it and i have 2 places the tape is bubbling (each about an inch or so in length). Neither one is crossing the joint so I'm going with step 1. Thanks!

    it felt awesome to hear pros get unlucky with the bond. I just did my first drywall patch and there's a small bubble as it is currently drying. apparently it can happen if your mud isn't wet enough (add water for looser consistency) or if you press/scrape too hard on your knife when taping removing too much of the underlying compound. Still glad I gave it a go.

    • @TOOL_TECHNICAL

    Yes... unfortunately this does happen. I have a problem with my bazooka where it is leaving a dry spot EVERY DAMN TIME about 12” off the floor. Imagine my surprise when we first coated the next day and I saw consistent bubbles in almost every joint. I removed about a 2” section, cut small pieces of mesh tape to fit inside and filled with durabond then proceeded normally with the subsequent coats. Couldn’t tell it even happened at the end. I was worried about the longevity but so far so good I have checked back and it’s been two years. When in doubt... durabond

    Thank you for the helpful video. I would like to suggest some info on bubbles along the edge of walls (along the ceiling, for instance), if you are ever looking into making this demo more complete. There are a lot of those in my 1919 house, from previous owners/reno-ers, and I wasn't more successful on the kitchen wall I just redid. The lack of square angles maybe?...

    What you can also do, I've found, is if your tape is already secured and you have bubbles going down the seam, you can slice all the way down to where the bubbles stop, then take some fresh mud and run it along the cut while pressing down hard with your tape knife. It'll work the fresh mud into the cut and help the bubbles form a bond underneath. That's only if you have a really long run of bubbles and don't want to replace a whole strip of tape.

    new subscriber here,
    I once had a professional taper and finisher do my 2 story addition. He had a bucket of water and another bucket of runny joint compound. He had misc lengths of paper tape soaking in the water till he needed a piece then he'd pull the tape out of the bucket of water and at the same time use 2 fingers to remove off most of the water. Then he'd run the tape through the runny mix of tape joint compound bucket and then lay it into the bedding layer. he said it helps with the dry tape problem you just fixed in the above video.

    • @ldavidson6853
      @ldavidson6853 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've seen another video where the taper got the whole roll wet and then hung a cardboard box around his neck with all the tape inside. It was amazing how fast he applied it to the whole room.

    Some people suggest using mesh tape. I don't agree however. Obviously the mesh wouldn't get air bubbles since it's airraited. But the mesh "floats" off the rock and swims to the top layer of the mud and is a PAIN to bury again.

    • @andrewcarr2431
      @andrewcarr2431 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i've found the mesh style works best with powered based compound, the "ready mix" stuff doesn't cover or bond as well to it. After a good couple of coats with the sheetrock 90, i've topcoated/skimmed using the joint compound. Paper tape seems to work well with either product and I mix/match depending on the job. I'm a home owner/decent DIY'er, not a professional plaster so this is simply my opinion.

    • @cz3chmonkey

    I just finished a bedroom, first time ever using paper tape, and didn't have a single problem until I got to the corners. All my corners have blisters and are loose, right where the tape sits in the corner. I guess I didn't have enough mud right in the corner or I squeezed too much out? It's frustrating because I called myself being careful, but I guess corners are just a little more difficult to get right. Going to pull all the corner tape and try again.

    Hey Shannon just another carpenters way I might suggest, I'll take a little mud on my knife on those edges spread it under the old tape and even in the middle if you can get under it spread fresh mud, the you don't have to worry about matching the tape ends up or getting more tape. Just a thought it works for me and saves time, later
