    Nice video. I got my first Cooper hawk when I was 12 and had him for five years. Quite an experience.That was back in the 1950s in Washington state. Thank you.

    Another excellent video, thanks for posting! My favourite part is at 3:19, the way the bird turns, especially with the slow motion, is amazing. Such beautiful and agile creatures. Bradley

    You have taken some lovely film of his flights, shows how energetic coopers hawks are.

    I've had Cooper's hawks coming to my little yard for about 10 years, feeding, bathing and sunning. The newest yearling male has become quite accustom to myself and allows me to get with six feet, since he sees me as not a threat. He watches the squirrels feed from my hand and the crows and other song birds landing within feet of myself. He has a perch in a large prickly bush that he hides in everyday for hours on end. I don't mind him hunting the collared doves and the hundred other birds I have in my yard, but have you ever heard of a hawk eating meat from a decoy or another kind of eating station?

      +XxAirbornexX have you ever looked at what it takes to obtain a falconry license in your state? That probably will give you some idea why it's not bigger...pretty big barriers to entry.

      Chester Kitty It's more like an obsession, or a lifestyle, as opposed to a sport. I liken it to adopting a two-year old child that you train to hunt with you. Your life tends to revolve around that "child", but it's a beautiful thing if you can make the commitment.

      +Chester Kitty It's $25 for a license to become a Falconer in Massachusetts.

    I don't have a falcon or hawk or know anyone in the sport, but I'm interested in the sport and i was wondering weather it would be alright if I attended a field meet in my area

    They look very much like the European Sparrow Hawks. Are they similar?

    • @justinparker2444
      @justinparker2444 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      they really do

    • @markmoore4088
      @markmoore4088 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Justin Parker Cooper's are similar to European Sparrowhawks since they're both accipiters, but the North American Sharp-shinned hawk is almost identical, except for being smaller.

    I was wonder if apprentices get to trap a hawk and have there own hawk to train while they are also being trained by a sponser.

    • @markmoore4088
      @markmoore4088 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. That's normally how it works in the States but it's up to the sponsor as to how soon he (or she) allows the apprentice to have a bird.

    Have you taken anything with him yet? If not , get a bird launcher and put some flight conditioned Bob White quail in it. Let your Vizla point it and then launch. Shouldn't take long before he's killing everything in sight.

    What's "Clicker training?"

    • @markmoore4088
      @markmoore4088 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Operant conditioning, most likely, in which good behavior is "tagged" by use of the sound of the clicker device. A reward usually immediately follows the tag. Training such as this will cause the hawk to do things to get you to reward it. Hopefully the things you want it to do.

      mark moore I guess it's like blowing the whistle before giving the young eyas a tidbit. I'm learning about newer falconry techniques everyday.

    • @markmoore4088
      @markmoore4088 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      old school hawking Yeah, me too. I think the clicker technique was highly popularized due in large part to Karen Pryor's book on operant conditioning called "Don't Shoot the Dog".

    Do you actually hunt with the Hawk? It's great to see him flying around and coming back to you but are they not for actually stalking and killing small game?

    My favorite bird to fly.. ben a long time.. has been to long crazy what happens when you get married and have kids.. next thing you know your working 60 hours a week and you just dont have time. I remember hearing that when I was young falconer now im living it.. big bummer what life does to you ... if I got a bird now I would be a strate up pet keeper...

    • @gfbutters1
      @gfbutters1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly the nail on the head, it isn't easy to balance work, family and falconry all in the same life. I had a job working shifts, also I worked at a falconry centre doing experience days alongside this and my girlfriend couldn't accept I was too tired to be as loving as when we first got together, sex became non-existant. I was simply too tired, eventually she left. I don't even think unless I got a brilliant job I can even balance a work life-falconry hobby. It makes it very restrictive for who can get involved however brilliant the lifestyle falconry on it's own brings. We are taught the neccesity for work all through our lives and our hormones make us want to look after women and their million and one needs, people who love falconry are caught up in the catch 21 scenario.
