Here's a story a guy I know (let's call him Mike) told me back around the time of the 2008 recession, when I mentioned I was sweating over oweing money to Revenue (Ireland). He said he owed revenue about 2,000euros from some self-employment income, and they were demanding it. He was unemployed at the time and didn't have it. Mike is a wild unafraid sort of a guy with the absolute best stories ever (all of them true). Went to court and he told the judge he didn't have it and and asked what will happen if I can't pay. The judge told him he'd go to jail. Mike told me he figured "Well I don't have the money, and I'm unemployed anyway so I might as well just go to jail" - He told the judge he wouldn't be paying it, so the judge sentenced him to a couple of months in jail. The local Garda (Irish cop) showed up to take Mike to jail early the next morning....I think about 7am, brought Mike to the local Garda station and left him in the holding cell with the door open. (keep in mind this is rural Ireland) Mike was brought breakfast around 8am. Then at 12 he was brought lunch, and when finished told he could be on his way home LOL And Mike said to me "And people are killing themselves over owing money to Revenue !!" - Debt no longer owed. Another friend who owned a small computer repair business at the time, said he was 'summoned' to the bank over an overdue loan, and he simply told the bank manager "I don't have the money right now, but when i have it, so will you. So stop badgering me, because I'm not jumping off a bridge for YOU or anyone else!" and he left LOL
